My work has multiple heat presses and I've done this process with comics. Assuming you used the right temperature, the comic should look relatively unaffected but less wrinkled or decompressed. Cotton clothing is regularly heat pressed or ink cured or at 300 degrees. Of course, paper probably shouldn't be subjected to those temperature; however, you would be surprised what tempatures are safe for most fibers for small durations.

I managed to be able to fix all imperfection back and front. Now I got to make sure to clean the teflon sheet and comic to make sure no dirt is transferred which is very difficult to notice until it is too late.

This video has been very helpful to me. I've had the very same heat press for only 2 weeks and within a very short time I went from testing on dollar bin books to considerably more valuable books with good to very good results. (A half grade+ bump, but often higher) One suggestion I must make, be VERY careful and slow each time you bring the press down onto a book. A slight inch or so to the left or right can shift the pages resulting in a popped staple. (Gladly I found that out on a dollar bin book ;)

x- webman. I found some small irregularities on the surface of the hot plate, maybe bits of slag and or paint that caused some pitting on the comic. I sanded it down with ultra fine sandpaper. Also just got a handheld steamer so, I'm still experimenting atm.

Very helpful video! I just experienced a bunch of flooding, and I’m trying to determine if something like this will help with my water damaged books. Is this mainly to improve the cover or will it work out page fluting throughout? Have you tried anything like the 100 page giants DC was putting out in the 70s? What about prestige books or annuals with squarebound spines?

Hi. Thanks for the fix on the Teflon sheets. Practice is going great. Next big question - I’m noticing a yellowing on the covers of my test books. I’m assuming a sign the book is being “baked”. Any suggested fix? Should I use Teflon sheet AND parchment paper to disperse heat? Just turn heat down? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

I think I would turn down the heat.

That soft pad needs to go bye bye as well. I use the hard surfaces and I purchased different media for what touches and doesn't touch books. After 2 years I have it down to a science and I can get some wicked results with what I've learned. I started with a box of worthless junk that ranged from moderate to serious damage and messed with heat, moisture and time until I came up with what I have now. Experiment anyone who is interested. I too watched videos like this and they have their value to be sure. But ultimately it is practice that gets you to Carnegie Hall.

Super important is before using it to check the top plate of the press (I just got mine on eBay for $120) for factory burrs and defects and the bottom plate for loose/high screws. I had to disassemble the press and use an electric sander grit 150 to smoothe the upper plate.

Hi, so what Temperature do you set yours at, how long do you press the book for and amount of pressure, and how long do you leave It in after the press is turned off? Would love to figure this out. lol

Great video. I have seen some people use a backing board at the top of the stack to keep any imperfections in the top plate from creating divots in the book. Have you ever tried using a backing board on top?

Thanks Robert! I’ve tried using one on top. It seems like using a thicker material keeps heat from the pages. Each comic may have a different need for heat setting, time in press, when & where to use boards.

Great video! I have the exact same press. I noticed you don't put a piece of card stock in the center of the book - do you ever get staple indentations without it? Do you use the same techniques on modern books as well? Thanks again for your insightful video. Best! M

Thanks! Yes, the staples can be a problem. The paper between the cover and the first page will help. Also backing off on the pressure may help.

Reuse everything until you see dirt or signs of wear. You can play around with the time and temperature, but I would suggest not going above 170. I cooked one pretty good at a high temp when I first started. You can press a comic without heat, but it takes a few months!

Thank you for this video although i a bit confused with the press machine settings. Im guessing the timer is basically a countdown clock so you know how long the comic has been in the press but you only set it for 1 second although you leave it in there for an hour. So basically i have 2 questions. First of all why not set the time to 1 hour(if thats possible) and do you give moisture to the cover or isnt that necessary.

Thanks for the comment. I should have been clearer about the timer. I use a hand held timer, so I set the timer on the press for 1 second. Sometimes I add moisture depending on the condition of the comic, but most of the time not.

I'm gonna buy one of those headlamps. I want to take better pictures of those imperfections before I put them on the heatpress and clean them instead of doing it in the day time. I also want to get those zoom in and out lamps, so I can capture every angle better and easier. And when I say headlamp, I mean headlamp. You know the ones you put them on your head. That's so you can get that better view and reflection for a better shot with the cam. Without it I'm afraid it takes a long time getting the comic in the right position for a shot.

Teflon will leave tiny indentions.

Hey Wirz World, my advice to you and everyone is: I don’t have all the answers. When I made this video I was trying to say that 170 degrees was the high end of temperature that should be used. I no longer use the teflon sheets. I have found that parchment paper achieves better results than the teflon paper.I would recommend starting your pressing with lower grade comics and tweaking the setting and times until you get the desired results. Depending on the condition of the comic I leave it on while pressing. After pressing front and back I turn off the heat and leave comic in the press for 3 hours or more, or even overnight.

There’s no way to measure pressure with this heatpress. I put as much as I can without damaging the machine.

I just watched another pressing video, and he put book into a " humidifier" set up before he put into a heat press. Seemed to make sense seeing older paper would be drier than when new, and introducing heat would dry out paper even more. Just bought china press off ebay, have some silly "Alf" comics someone gave me to be the guinea pig. Will give it a go.

The teflon last a very long time. If you use parchment paper you have to change it often, sometimes after each comic. The 150lb paper should be changed when it looks visibly soiled or creased. Change the backing board when visibly soiled.

I’m very happy with the results so far. Some look so good after pressing that I keep looking at them thinking WOW! If you find a better way or better products I would like to know so I can upgrade.

It depends on the severity of the bends or creases. I place them on a rack in a plastic container that has about a half inch of water in the bottom and leave them in for an hour or so.

Holy smokes this was very helpful and informative, I plan on ordering a press here soon and practicing on some bulk books. Does pressing help with Spine ticks?

Yes, it does matter to some degree. I had a few in really bad shape I tested out first. I had one that was missing pages that I pressed first with the heat set to 300 degrees & it cooked it pretty good. It took most of the ink right off the cover!

A question about the Teflon sheets. I bought a press awhile ago and was very happy with the results. At first. Then I noticed that the surface of the covers was picking up the texture of the Teflon sheets. They have a very faint, almost imperceptible pebbling on the surface. You can run your fingernail across it and hear a zzzzzip. When I compare one of my pressed comics to an untreated one, I can see the difference. It's slight, but it's there. I tried putting an acid-free board between the comic and the Teflon but the cover actually picked up the subtle variations of the backing board! Are there Teflon sheets available that are perfectly flat with no texture? I can't find any sold around here, I had to get them on eBay.

Do you leave press ON with heat during that hour? I've seen videos where they suggest to pre-heat, then press a minute or less, then leave the book in the press for 8 hours. Also, what are your thoughts on using a sheet of aluminum on the foam pad. It is said this eliminates the need to flip the book and you can place it cover side up. Any advice is helpful.

Good questions! I leave the heat on, but you should try others ways & see what works best. I’ve never heard of the aluminum trick - sounds interesting.

@@x-webman Thanks for the reply. It’s just an hour under heat seems like a long time. The aluminum serves as a type of conductor during the heat transfer press to the best of my understanding.

After a gentle cleaning, I use a clothes steamer where ever there are wrinkles/folds. I have had great results pressing bronze age books using boards, teflon sheets as you described plus using parchment paper surrounding the whole book. Then I use that tee shirt press at 155 degrees for 10 minutes to press the front, flipping book if needed to back side and repeating. I cool the book for a few of hours in the press or under a very large book. Frankly though, I cannot imagine "cooking the books" at a higher heat for an hour or more! Thank you for the video.

You know what I mean, if you've ever bought a comic from a dealer that didn't have them in bags... They might look good at the time, but they age at a much faster rate, then something you put in to a bag and box when it first hit the shelves...

I’ve read different things about the effects of heat pressing. It’s a good point to bring up. I try to only use heat to press a comic if it really needs it. I’ve pressed a lot with no heat, only pressure. That takes a few months for a good pressing, though.

What brand is this press? And is it still working well for you since uploading this video? Thanks for your time

It only says “HEATPRESS” on it, so I guess that’s the brand. I haven’t used it in a couple of years, but I pressed hundreds of comics with it.

I don’t think it matters. Make sure there is no texture that would press into the comic.

I don;t know if the steamer adds moisture. The pages pretty much are dry like a steamer is suppose to do and the pages become wavy. Maybe it doesn't add enough moisture like it's suppose to but it does give some.

So you run it at temp 170 for an hour on each side. Then turn off and leave for 3 hrs

I found leaving it in the the press longer to cool down helps.

You can take it out right away and throw a magazine on it to help dissipate heat gradually which will cure those waves

what kind of sheets of teflon do you use. I find most cause "pitting" on the comic. Pretty much all the ones on amazon seem to have the same small type of pitting pattern hard to pick up with the eye but easy to see under magnafication

I figured it might be because I had reused it? Do you know a brand of Teflon paper without a [pitting transfer. Most the ones I see on amazon have it.

I’m sure these things are not calibrated properly; 170 on yours or mine might not really be the same temperature, or even be near 170! Try turning down to 150 or 130 ( or even more ).

What heat press do you recommend? I was looking at this one - Heat Press T-Shirt Heat Transfer Sublimation Machine 15" x 15" Clamshell - Black on ebay. Also, did you have to sand down the plate for yours. I saw where another youtuber did that?

Try using parchment paper

Man those imperfections are hard to fix. I have to clean everything. Now I'm using a pc vacuum cleaner to clean all that dirt and hairs and whatever. I use the palm of my hand to feel any dirt or whatever on the comic. That white teflon is useful to get a better view of the comic. You can also see the dirt, hairs and whatever better, but it kinda sticks to the presser and moves the comic out of place so be careful. The vacuum helps dealing with the dirt, hairs, whatever so out of sight out of mind is better I think. I'm still stuck on my 3rd comic fixing all those imperfections and cleaning cause I like to be thorough so no videos yet. When you're pressing a comic why you're not putting 2 to 3 magazine backboards on top of the comic before pressing why are using Teflon or silicone paper only and then pressing without boards on top of the silicone or Teflon paper? That's the way I've always done it I never had an issue

Shouldn't worry about that timer. You have your own timer using your smartphone.

Will pressing help a warped corner? I bought some comics and the seller packaged it terribly. The corners are warped inwards and stay that way.

Did you leave in the press for a few hours with the heat off? That usually stops the wavy pages.

@@x-webman yes I'm guessing my temp is too high and possibly applying too much pressure on the press. Some say you have to leave in press for 24-48 hours is that correct?

High temps will give a wavy look. It really helps to leave in the press for a few hours or overnight.

Some people say to leave it there for up to 24 hours or longer so it won't be wavy.

@@1111Tarah If after 24 hours you still don't like the results, leave it there for another 24 hours. If it's up to your satisfaction, time to move on to the next comic.

Why do you use the 150lbs paper between the inside page and cover?

The paper flattens the edges that overhang the body of the comic.

Depends on the condition, from 10 minutes to 1 hour.

Thank you, I will check them out. I have been using parchment paper but after a couple of uses you need to change them out. I also tried the Teflon sheets found on ebay, the ones used for cooking, but I would advise against those as they have a texture to them and will leave that texture imprint on your books. Thanks again for the info.

Do you know what section in Michaels they are in? I’ve bought 2 different sets from Amazon & both have wrinkles in them that end up pressing in my comics

Do not use teflon sheets directly on comics if you're sending to cgc. It creates a look now called canvassing, on the comics surface. They will take off for it.

@@cozhavok I've been using a non-stick silicone paper for heat press transfers. Works really well. Itll add a little humidity while in the press as well. Which seems to aid better in pressing out bends.

todd24yell It depends on the condition of the book. Most of the ones I’ve pressed are for 30 to 60 minutes.

You can always get new ones.

Also I noticed that the bottom of the comic even after leaving it the presser 59 hours was still kinda wavy, so what I did was instead of the staples going in first, I did the other way and it worked. I also changed the white sheets of paper cause they looked like they needed to be changed. It works every time. I really don't know what the problem is. maybe right amount of pressure is the problem. Screws may not be placed right. It's all about trial and error never give up never surrender.

Good question. I only used it for a few months. I pressed about a thousand comics with it, though, if that helps!

@@x-webman looking for a heat press named heat press is so much fun.

I was able to fix the comic that has heavy marks. Do not overuse those magic erasers. They will remove color and ruin your comic. Whatever you do do not touch the comic with your fingers they will leave a mark 99% of the time. Use paper towel or gloves to handle the comic book. Use the paper towel to make small circles around the area where you see the smudges done by your fingers. It works for me 100% of the time. Remember small circles every 30 seconds look at the results. And erasers, only use those for white areas to clean. Never use that for colored areas. In case you make that mistake like I did. Use the paper towel method to fix that mistake. Good thing I am only on my 3rd comic. It will be awhile before I do any more, The Heatpress works but it takes many tries before you get it right so practice practice practice.

Backround music is phenomenal.... pressing those buttons wasn't!

Professional pressers say that Teflon is a strict no no...just saying,,,each to their own

I’ve changed my method since making this video. I pre-heat to 145, put the comic in, then turn the press off & leave comic in the press for 1 - 3 hours; turn comic over and repeat.

you leave the temp at 173 for the full hour?

I found it’s better to not heat above 170. Depending on the condition of the comic, it could be 10 minutes to 1 hour.
