So, in today's news, generalized press completely misinterpret scientific experiment and report entirely made up news about a revolutionary discovery. Next: ice is cold. 🤣 Thankfully, we have people like Anton that help in divulging actual scientific facts and clear up misunderstanding caused by those superficial journalists, in a very clear and understandable manner. Always very interesting to listen to him.

Weird that yin and yang would be thought to be an "image" of entangled "atoms"? The concept seems inverted from entanglement as particles are not mirrored by each other or polarized but acting in tandem or a matched set, I don't think there is a right and left side or a north and south, but I might be wrong. Even on the basic idea of entanglement it doesn't fit the concept of yin and yang which is more polarity. We have plenty of yins and yangs already i don't know why entanglement has to have this quality as well except people think they feel it when they meditate or dream😃.

When I originally saw this "science news" story, I rolled my eyes. An Actual photo or image of a particle would mean that the location and the velocity of the particle were both precisely known at the same time, which according to the laws of physics is impossible. For non-quantum physicist readers, this is why the article is bullshit: A particle is merely a wave function before it is observed. It is in a quantum state of superposition between a particle and a wave which means it exists both in two places at once and at no place at all. A wave function is a mathematical probability, the math states that if the velocity of a wave function is known, it's position can not be known and when it's position is known, it's velocity cannot be known, this is a mathematical fact. So, when one of the two mathematical figures is unknown, the equation can not be reduced in order to know the exact position of the wave function. A wave function is not a particle. When the particle interacts with the real universe, the wave function collapses into a particle, but before it collapses, it is just a theoretical possibility. I know this sounds like a bunch of gobltygook but the quantum world does not interact with the normal macro universe using the same rules that the macro world does. Einstein's theory of relativity reveals many of the rules and many of these "rules" of quantum physics are still being discovered as physicists continue to study and build quantum computers and operate the different particle accelerators across the world.

I am in agreement with @jordanfelts182 "for now" , just as laws are made to be broken physical laws are made to be disproven and the things that we as the general public who take some interest in scientific advancements are being allowed to discover are bending the laws of physics to there breaking point. Example, search Ted talk camera taking femtoframes per second. Allowing us to watch as light penetrates darkness one femto frame at a time and that is a fairly old Ted talk. Where we are now is anyone's guess.

It's not quite like "altering one particle alters the other". It's correlation. If we don't collapse one of them and force its spin to be left if polarity was in other axis like up, then we basically break the entanglement. An entanglement is a resulting wave, a system we can't see like the original ones but can filter and that's how we get the components. The explanation about the holograms is very good. Quantum tunneling Anton. Talk about how many applications does that quantum effect has.

Hi Anton! My impression from the research paper is that they were taking images of quantum entangled states (rather than of other objects via ghost imaging) using a new variant of quantum state tomography. This is where you prepare hundreds of the same quantum state and measure all of them to determine the wavefunction of the system via probability analysis. However, it is still true that the Yin Yang symbol is misleading. As the article says, "the two-photon wavefunction strongly depends on the shape of the pump laser used to induce the down-conversion process". They formed a pump in the shape of the Yin-Yang symbol and the photon wavefunction was essentially molded into that shape. They then performed tomography on that molded quantum state using their method, and that's what the image was.

  • @bepamungkas

That quote is for the "old" SPDC-based method, and one of the reason why it took so long to do imaging. To quote from the elaboration improved method "The core idea lies in assuming the SPDC state induced by a plane wave as known, and in superimposing this state with the unknown biphoton state..." "Remarkably, we show how, from a simple measurement, one can retrieve information about two-photon states in arbitrary spatial mode bases without the efficiency and alignment issues that affect previously implemented projective characterization techniques" They way I understand it, they improve the processing by introducing "unknown" pump that will get scattered by the imaged object. Which result then later combined with the "known" pump to reconstruct the image faster by reducing spatial analysis time.

This was something I saw on phys org and did a double take. I had to look through the article carefully and then to the source paper as I quickly grew suspicious that they were displaying an imaging/analysis technique that produced the taijitu - not that some field potentials were the taijitu. The way the picture was framed within the headline and intro paragraph, they were really banking on the idea that entanglement had been photographed and it was as prophesied in the yin-yang. Of course... those who know their history know that the earlier depiction of the taiji was as a spiral.

Nice job. Unfortunately, the short video on ghost imaging is also misrepresenting the process of generating entangled photons. You cannot simply split a laser beam to generate entangled photons. In general, you need a nonlinear process such as spontaneous parametric down conversion. This creates two red photons from a single blue photon. The photons are entangled due to the process respecting conservation laws. Another interesting fact about ghost imaging; it is essentially the same process used in the delayed choice quantum eraser experiments.
