I don't blame Van Buren for fighting for those tiger cubs. Imagine a foreign dictator comes to the White House for a diplomatic meeting, and is greeted by a couple of tigers pouncing at him only to get stopped by their leashes, while the president comes to calm them down saying "down boys/girls" and petting them. That would go down in legend.

Coolidge paying for his own turkey is very much in character, it reminds me of a a fun fact about him I learned in college. Coolidge was so fiscally conservative that he didn’t want to waste taxpayer money on his Presidential Portrait. Coolidge was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, and hearing of this, they offered to pay for Coolidge’s portrait. Coolidge agreed, and the portrait was commissioned. When the Smithsonian requested his portrait from the White House, they technically couldn’t give it because the fraternity had already taken it back to display in their museum. The Smithsonian asked if they’d be willing to donate it, and they essentially said “no”, which is why Coolidge’s portrait is the only replica to be on display, instead of the original.

​@@John-ir4id Idk seems pretty reasonable to at least ask. I haven't looked into it or anything but it didn't sound like they were forcing them to donate it they just made a request and when denied they had a replica made which seems incredibly normal to me.

So for Tafts cow there is a good chance that he means that those employees recognized that she wasn’t a cull cow and certainly not a beef animal, but a milk-producing Holstein Dairy Cow. As she was a dairy cow and likely hadn’t been milked recently she would likely have been leaking milk so she clearly wouldn’t have been a dry cow off to market. Added to being in a solo car and I’m sure a bit of fuss over where she was, they likely put together that it was the missing Pauline. Fun fact- the World Dairy Expo is still held in Wisconsin each year. It’s the most prestigious dairy show in the world

As someone who loves raccoons and possums (absolutely undeserved bad rep), the Coolidge/Hoover section was very wholesome

Favorite is Herbert Hoover’s Weegie. Norwegian Elkhounds are such beautiful dogs. I also like Calvin and Grace Cooldige’s Rob Roy; he looks so elegant next to that portrait with the First Lady.

The Parrish priest my mother had as a kid had a dog named ‘Satan”. Apparently he got a kick out of saying “get back ye Satan” when it misbehaved.

Scotland has two domestic cup competitions. The Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup. It was the League Cup that we won yesterday. First since 2011. Rangers last won the Scottish Cup in 2022 a few days after losing the Europa League Final in Seville. The Scottish Cup for this season has yet to start. Hopefully we win that cup too.

I’m surprised Sam didn’t mention the veritable menagerie of animals that Theodore Roosevelt kept in the White House. The man and his family kept dogs, cats, horses, guinea pigs, chickens (including a one-legged rooster), parrots, a horned lizard, a garter snake, a black bear cub, a cougar, a rat, a badger, a pig, a rabbit, a barn owl, a hyena, a zebra, and a lion. The latter three were gifts from the Emperor of Ethiopia and were soon sent to a zoo. Roosevelt considered guinea pigs to be especially good pets for children and they were given names such as Admiral Dewey, Dr. Johnson, and Fighting Bob Evans.

@@VloggingThroughHistory Well that is just superb Chris, the Old Toll is one of the many pubs that Gers fans frequented on the way to Ibrox & after the match. Ibrox is just a special football stadium , I first attended the old stadium in September 1977 as a 17 year old laddie taking the train from my home in Pitlochry Perthshire. Seen some fantastic games over the years & wonderful European night's, Rangers are part of us & we are part of Rangers.
