President Thomas AM/FM CB RADIO Has Arrived! An In Depth Look At the first FM CB In The USA.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I am blessed to be one of the first people in the USA to have the opportunity to own a FCC approved AM/FM CB Radio. The all new President Thomas CB radio certainly lives up to the hype. It's a mid sized radio with all the features and functions anyone would want, and now it has the added features of FM mode. I have a second Thomas here and will be installing it in the car as soon as the weather improves so we can get some range tests on AM AND FM. I can't wait!
It's a new dawn for CB radio, and this is the radio that led the way.

I like my President McKinley AM/SSB radio. My friend, who lives six miles away, has the same radio. For the past two years, since we first hoisted our antennas, mine at 54 ft. in height, and his at 45 feet in height, we've talked so often, at about half past 10p.m.,on AM channel 38, that we had to replace our microphones. Where we live, our telephone service isn't the best. One day, last year, I got on the radio one evening to hear my friend ask me if I could take him to the hospital. He had a kidney stone making him very sick. Having that CB radio communication set up, as a back-up to poor cell phone reception, may have saved his life.

I went offloading in winter. I had a tremendous amount of fun in the ice, snow, and darkness. When it was time for me to leave, I had to cross the same small river that I crossed to begin my night of adventure. My front wheels broke through the ice and the jeep was hopelessly stuck with no traction on the ice. I was in a rather deep valley, far from cellular reception. I got on my ancient nearly forgotten Cobra 148Gtl on channel 38 LSB and called for assistance. About an hour later, an old Ford F-150 with a powerful winch came down into the valley he crossed the river and pulled my jeep backwards out of the ice hole. The guy was then nice enough to stay with me until I finished crossing the river. He asked for nothing but a handshake and told me to keep using the CB and keep it alive. Thanks Mud Stomper from the Grinder KBX-1339. I will be using my CB a lot more again

I have the European version of the McKinley here in British Columbia, Canada and it does have FM as well as AM/SSB. However the European version of the McKinley does not have the weather channels mainly because they don't have weather stations over in Europe. The circuit board of the FCC version and the EU version are quite different from each other. The FCC McKinley cannot be modified but the EU European version can be easily modified and has duel finals and a large heat sink which the FCC version doesn't have. I ordered mine from a European dealer and it cost quite a bit with customs and taxes and such but it's well worth it as far as I'm concerned. I think we'll see a North American version of the European style McKinley soon with FM but I'm sure that with FCC approval it probably won't be modifiable like the EU version.

I always liked CB, but grew up around hams so the latter is the path I took, although thinking about an inexpensive/secondhand rig for my work truck. My biggest issue is overall height, my Ram 1500 is already 10'1" to the ladder racks on my toolbox camper. Adding 48" or more for good propagation seems steep, I'm already looking at 38.5" to accommodate my VHF/UHF 2m/70m rig from the cab roof, which keeps me under 12 feet. Fender and bed mounts are a no.

But maybe the Chinese didn’t actually believe that Putin was that stupid. Missed opportunity or maybe waiting for him to mess with nato for a few years. Anyway there is a huge surge in need for ICs. Thousands of new products have been asking for more and more. Add huge shipping problems and confusion and you get this crap. On conspiracy, just lack of foresight. Also they don’t need high tier Taiwan silicon. Nearly anyone can make a basic CB.

I hear some complaints out there that this thing does not have single side band. Eventually I sure that's coming but I think it was wise for president to come up with an affordable radio for only $100. Instead of starting out by marketing FM on a three or $400 monster which may not sell very well. And most of us already have one of those anyway. As a ham I use CB as a secondary source of communication and this thing is very compact and will easily fit in my vehicle. It is cheap and will get me up and running on FM quickly So I ordered one. Seriously! The only base currently available is the monstrosity by Galaxy. I have no problem with it being big, but it is notorious for frequency drifting on SSB, therefore I will not buy one. An FM capable base station with CTCSS/DCS would be ideal and probably sell like hotcakes. You could set the CTCSS or DCS to a tone mutually agreed upon by family, friends, or others, and not have to listen to skip, static, and other crud with the squelch set low. I think this would add tremendous convenience to CB as far as monitoring goes.

The thing with FM is that the signal either makes it to the receiver or it doesn’t. A weak single will be choppy and you may or may not get every word. But it’s nice and clean audio compared to AM. And Propagation can happen on FM too. Just that conditions have to be good. Thanks Eric for your review. I was waiting for “Your” review. Always look forward to P2 or sometimes P3 videos. Good luck.

@@mikecricket113 I talk from south Carolina to Canada on FM. I turn on my rm Italy amp set it to run 60 Watts and let it rip. I just talked to Arizona on FM the other day. While am tends to propagate better it really doesn't have any special advantage. Its the frequency that really propagates. Like 146 Mhz isn't going far but 27 Mhz will. FM is very similar to am in receiving static but you talk in digital mode totally quiet no noise.

Here in the Seattle area we've started a weekly FM Net on Channel 30, to take advantage of the new mode and the lower noise! I know some people scoffed at adding FM to CB in the USA, but so far it's been a nice addition to our options. PLUS, the added mode is now attracting some of the other Hams around here; the Technician license allows for USB traffic on 10 meter, so also having an 11 meter radio that has AM, FM and sideband adds a lot to any radio hobby. I currently have a Ranger RCI 2950 that does 10 and 11 meter in all modes; but I would love to pick up a Thomas now that I've seen this review. Thanks for sharing!

Not sure if any one has asked this, but why is the scan function limited to a single band?? I don't think I've actually seen a radio that scans (just as an example:) AM,USB, & LSB, all in one go. and now with FM in the mix, it seems this would be needed Evan more, as it "spreads out" / "opens up" the conversation space. At least none was mentioned and I take that to mean it does not take advantage of one of FM's really great features. I hope future models will be CTCSS/DCS capable. I know the "Randy" (ht) for the Euro market does have CTCSS/DCS so hopefully that is coming, as well as an upgrade to the USA "Randy" for FM.

another feature for vox would be using it like a repeater function which is nice you just put the microphone right up against the speaker and have a nice level for volume just enough to trigger it and you have an instant repeater that repeats one way transmissions how cool is that or you can rig up your own mic cable and be able to adapt it to whatever scanner you have to re-broadcast the traffic once it picks things up so yeah it's gonna come in handy definitely I cannot wait to get one myself gonna be very interesting

President was part of that petition along with Cobra to add FB to 11 meters. I actually don't see much use for it, other than to sell more radios. I have a $40 am CB in my vehicle, so I can talk to truckers while out on the highway, but you don't hear very much unless there is a traffic backup. AM CB with a mobile antenna has a max effective range of about 2 miles under decent conditions. I have an SSB base station with some additional output power at home for DX use. I have a general class ham license, but after getting it and buying an HF radio, I find that I don't use it that much. Aside from 11 meter SSB, I mostly use 2 meter and 70 centimeter FM, which is pretty much worthless without repeaters. And CBs aren't going to have repeaters. You get a clear signal and good audio at short range, but on simplex, without repeaters, you don't have much range. At least the UHF and VHF bands do not require a HUGE antenna like 11 meters. 11 meter FM will still require that huge antenna, or a VERY inefficient loaded antenna to work. I just don't see much benefit to it. I wonder what the heat sink is for? It's still only 4 watts. Lots of features (at least it doesn't have an echo board in it) but not a single FM signal. It looks ok, but what good is it if it doesn't work? And in most "modern" vehicles, 4 watts of RF might just fry all the chinese computers. BTW, where was that radio made? I also only drive old vehicles. I won't drive anything without a carburetor.

Thanks for that great review! I've been away from CB for some time now, (about 2 years since my last transmission) so don't laugh at my next question, but; Do any of the Presidents include a meter that indicates transmit and SWR readings? My present radio, (that I've had since about 2007/8), is a Cobra 29 NW LTD Classic. When I used to drive, (from '86 to '92, OTR/48), I had a Cobra that had some good reach, so when I bought another radio, it was another Cobra. However, now I have my eye on the President Lincoln II Plus. A simple resistor addition will give me CB 11 meter and it appears that I'll likely be buying that in the next month or so, (just after I trade in my 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee for another Jeep). Still, the "FM" option in this Thomas is very intriguing, but if you have FM, what advantages will that give you? I mean, how many people have an FM radio that are not in some sort of business, (i.e. construction, survey, etc.), and would want to talk to anyone on the 'company radio'? What is the average range of FM and can it work on skip effect, (like SSB or CB)? Again, thanks for the great review, Rich

Hey! I think in my areas GMRS just didn't catch on. I do sometimes hear families in local contact while on day trips on FRS, and some light construction traffic on GMRS, but no local groups or chats. CB is still the king when it comes to chat. It's a lot less than in it's peak, but we are out there! FM mode? Don't let it confuse you. It's just another feature, but it's one that no one uses. Now, SSB mode is something to consider. A lot of CB users chat there.

They should add a relocatable faceplate option. This would facilitate adding a CB to some of these newer vehicles that have very little room about the dash to put the ENTIRE radio. The other nice addition would be Bluetooth spkr/mic, or headset capability. Headsets only used when NOT_DRIVING as using a headset while driving is ILLEGAL in most if not all US States.

VOX is the best way to run a hands-free comms setup: driving, especially in heavy traffic or bad wx, a lightweight headset or ear/mic is the best. I've used a vox headset on a W/T & a mobile rig for heavy equipment use & tower/antenna installs. Heck, even around the shack, VOX is great when you need to copy down QSL or callsign info, or just a sandwich & coffee while on your local net.
