    I was 14 when this happened and I remember how the entire world seemed to be holding its breath from about 1983 to 1987. The American attack on Libya was another potential flashpoint. Reagan did a very good job in this period although to be honest I didn't like him much then. Also I think Gorbachev sometimes doesn't get the credit he deserves for being able to meet with Reagan and dial the cold war back without either side losing face and I bet both men would be saddened by the state of the world today.

  • @thehistoricalgamer

    @thehistoricalgamer

    10 жыл бұрын

    Gorbachev was a great leader, someone willing to really take big risks and eventually lose his power to do what he thought was right for his nation, Reagan similarly Reagan was a great communicator and leader, agree or disagree with their policies their ability to look past their public rhetoric and work together is what truly made them both great. Reagan talked though but was more than willing to work with the Soviets, the tough talk gave him the latitude to decide where we would cooperate and yet he wasn't obstructionist in dialing back the cold war, Gorbachev had similar characteristics though more toned down, he looked past Reagan's rhetoric and was able to spin things in a way that both leaders could partner without losing face, they may have been men of their times but the world is very fortunate to have had both men in power at the right time and place.

    Regardless of politics or who you voted for, Reagan knows how to make a damn good speech. I posted this video on my facebook status in reference to flight MH17 because this speech addresses the emotions and the plight of the victims, their families and all decent people around the world far better than Barack Obama's mumbling press conference did just a few hours ago. This is despite Reagan having made this address 31 years prior to the shoot down of MH17.

    What a lot of people have to realize is that a US plane or a Korean one flying over A Soviet No-Fly zone got shot down. I don't condone this acts but think about it, it's the middle of the Cold War and say a soviet plane flies over US territory, it's gonna get shot down no matter what you can't just look at the soviets and blame them cause every other nation would have done the same.

    You know, the RC-145 is helpless against a fighter jet. If any aircraft over flies a sovereign nation without permission that nation is within it's rights to force that plane to land. Can you imagine the value to the USSR of capturing a US RC0135 and it's crew? Such a thing would generate propaganda, concessions from the US for the safe return of the planes crew (which could be interrogated in the mean time) and the greatest value of such a thing would be intelligence gathered from the plane itself. I can not imagine the reason for shooting down such a plane if they could capture it. Of course capturing a passenger airplane would not be very valuable. You could maybe hold the crew for violating your airspace and you'd get the plane but it would not generate much value to intelligence. I think they knew EXACTLY what the plane was.

    US also shot down an Iranian airliner in the 80's

    Though the Iranian shootdown was tragic, it was somewhat different; it was a mistaken transponder code, and a split second decision to fire surface to air missiles. KAL 007 was tracked for hours, and human fighter pilots made clear visual contact with the plane. That pilot, knowing that it was filled with innocent lives, coldly shot it down anyway.

    Jesse Bains You mean it is a justifying attitude NOT to have looked twice before pulling the trigger or to double-check via voice radio and then destroy the flying missile remote-controlled before impact? Or did the US Navy use only Third World missiles at that time?As far as the Soviet fighter pilot was concerned the only thing he saw at nighttime was a plane which SEEMED TO BE an airliner but could have been as well US air recon camouflaged as a third country civilian plane or flying in the radar shadow of a civilian plane. Unfortunately he knew that there were no foreign planes admitted at all in that sensitive area nor had the Korean captain reacted to the repeated Soviet demand to identify - just as you wrote "over hours". In the end the notorious East Asian "don't loose your face by admitting that you made a mistake" attitude led to this tragic outcome. And just as it was a matter of seconds for the crew on USS Vincennes to decide, it was a matter of seconds for the Soviet air defence to decide before the plane would have left the Soviet air space. (Whilst Iran Air 665 was shot down while being still in its own air space, to add that.)
