President Biden lands in the UK to get fuel for Air Force One 🇺🇸 🇬🇧

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

US President Joe Biden lands at RAF Mildenhall for jet fuel on his way back from the Middle East. Biden stayed on the plane, a modified Boeing 747 with the call-sign 'Air Force 1', while it re-fuelled amongst a large security presence at the US Air Force operated base in Suffolk, England.
The Boeing VC-25 is operated by the US Air Force, a modified Boeing 747 for military VIP use. While he is on-board it carries the call-sign 'Air Force 1' and is followed by a support plane, a Boeing C-32 (modified Boeing 757), that also landed for fuel.
A motorcade of US security vehicles and London Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism / Special Escort Group units were on standby in case he needed to travel by land. Two US Army Blackhawks from Germany were also on standby for medevac if needed. Military police provided security around the base while a no-fly zone was put into place.
For a full video of planes and helicopters, along with Biden travelling in a security motorcade in Scotland, watch this video: • Video

I was stationed at Mildenhall in the '80s. Loved it. Reagan was president. He & Thatcher were close allies. When he was in England, Air Force One stated at Mildenhall. I was fortunate enough to be on the previous Air Force One, a modified Boeing 707. As an Air Force ARFF, it was required that we did a walkthrough. We need to know where the T- Handles for Fire Suppression are & Engine Shut Down procedures. We had access to the entire aircraft EXCEPT the communications room. If that's on fire, let it burn. Kind of like the SR-71 Blackbird. If the front of the aircraft is on fire, save it. The rear seat pilot, let it burn. We had 2 Stationed at Mildenhall. Great times at The Galaxy Club & all the towns of East Anglia.

Not that I disagree with you but they probably chose to stop for fuel rather than using a tanker for convenience. Tankers generally have to fly at a specific speed and altitude for refueling. Many different factors could have cause them not, i.e. severe turbulence or cloud coverage. They would have to onload probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 140,000 lbs of fuel to continue on and a KC-135 is pretty much full at that point. At the average 6,500 lbs per minute fuel transfer speed, it would take 21 minutes! That's pretty straining on the pilots, especially after just coming all the way from the Middle East. So, the probably were stopping for fuel for an easier day.

I watched it land and take off in Paris during the GWB presidency. Security there was not excessively stringent, and it was not at a military airfield - It was at Orly airport, which was open for business as per usual. They did a trick though - they took off in the opposite direction from all the other traffic. Aircraft were taking off to the north-east (RWY 06) and AF1 departed to the south-west (RWY24). I don't know why they did this, but one might guess it is an extra precaution to thwart a ground-based attack. The 747-200 was not alone. It was accompanied by a 757, painted in identical US livery. I watched them arrive together - military style, with very close spacing between them - but they did not depart together (I didn't see the 757 depart). I was listening to ATC, and they used the callsign "Airforce One". They had a clearance limit (don't recall what it was) but they requested to climb direct to 10,000ft, which was approved.

Fascinating! This is a valuable video in detailing of all the efforts that go into US Presidential security. Even if the President was not on board, I just enjoy seeing all the different service vehicles that provided support, the plane spotters, etc. The President visited my city a few months back, but I did not make a special effort to watch the event....I didn't think I would be able to see much, if anything, so I let the security folks have one less person to be concerned with milling about. Thanks very much, and I enjoy all your videos!

Do 747s have to remain on the ground after landing for a certain time to let the brakes cool off before they can move again? I was on a Lufthansa 747 once on a flight from JNB to FFT that had to make a pit stop in ATH for additional fuel and the captain told the passengers he couldn't take off again for 90 minutes, so the brakes could cool. (I don't know any other reason for that length of stop, and it made me miss a connection to IAD -- but LH put me on a DL flight which got me to Washington on time for a meeting.

Only if the next landing stage is within the cooling period, essentially hot brakes swell in size, if you cooled them 50% whilst taking fuel and then took off which is achievable immediately then flying for four plus hours its ok, but if your flight plan is a local stopping route and its 45 minutes then essentially you only got a short time to cool them to allow the full capacity, not a good idea if you have your now heavy fuel filled plane with a warm swollen 50% capacitant brake system

It isn't up to the President. Inflight refuelling is deemed a safety concern for such Presidential flight and hence the capability is not used for such peactime flights. US Secret Service call the shots for safety and security. The replacement aircraft for these VC-25A, the VC-25Bs will not have the inflight refuelling capability.

@@Tomteeejay The Air Force controls operations of the aircraft and in-flight refueling for both of the AF1 aircraft, the Doomsday plane and the C17s that move the helicopters and vehicles are all routinely refuelled in air, not on the ground. More to the point the AF1 aircraft range on a tank of fuel is more than sufficient to make the trip described on a singlo fuel load.

@@nochannel1q2321 Nonsense. The VC-25As are not in-flight refuelled when POTUS in onboard. So explain why the VC-25As make a refuelling stop in Alaska when flying to the likes of Japan or South Korea? They wouldn't be making that scheduled stop and detailing it on their flight plans if in-flight refuelling was being used. The procedure of in-flight refuelling with POTUS onboard is deemed too risky for peacetime flights. In a dire emergency or wartime conditions then that option is of course available, but is deemed too risky and it why it is not conducted. The replacement aircraft VC-25B 747-800 as it currently stands will have no inflight refuelling capability and has even less range that the current VC-25A 747-200s due to the all up weight with the modifications to AF1 standard.
