Preserving Swiss Chard - Reduce Waste with these 2 Methods

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've had chard growing all over winter and it's taken over the raised bed but it's time to clear and get the bed ready for planting spring beans - here's how I saved all the best bits and now have a nice stock of swiss chard greens in the freezer, and some super green powder in the pantry too. I hope it helps you when you've got a greens glut - whether from the garden or by picking up some bargains at the shops!

Thanks for the video! I'm going to try this with my chard, with one difference: When I get ready to freeze the stem pieces, I'm going to put them on parchment paper. That way it will be easier, I think, to transfer them after they're frozen.

We still have chard in our garden. We had our first snow last night so it's covered in snow this morning. I grew the chard from seed using the winter sowing method, I think I sowed the seeds last March. We live in Zone 5 rural upstate NY.

Sounds great! I do really love chard and how lovely and cheerful to have them all through winter too. The salt winds are bit of a tough proposition here in winter (bad enough in summer!)

Wow, I've been looking into food preservation so this video is a great start. Awesome way to feed family some "hidden" veggies. I want to try dehydrating things now. ;--)) Thanks for sharing. Oh, I see you also have a "doggie" plant, how cute ♡♡ Be well.

I've watched on other KZread channels that if you cut your harvest 2 in above the center stem, it will keep growing

Yes they are super good at growing back. I take mine out cos I only have 3 raised beds and need the space but if I've missed a bit of root, they'll come back up the following year! Great crop

I’m wondering how you use the stems. I’ve been giving them to my child for their Guinea pigs, but I’d love to use them for us too. Really great information!

Hi Kay and thank you so much for your kind comments. One of my favourites is making them into a spiced potato and greens recipe called Saag Aloo. I’ve a video on this and you can see the recipe card on my (very neglected) blog on this link www.cookingandcalm.com/blog/new-recipe-ideas-for-rainbow-chard-saag-aloo . I also use them alongside sautéed onion and cheese in quiche or frittata. Delicious 😋. Then I use the stems often in the same way I use celery when making up anything with a mirepoix (sautéed diced onions, carrot, celery) . Just dice small and sauté with the rest. If,you’ve an airfryer I’ve coated them in panko breadcrumbs and air fried and eaten with a dip too - your little one might like this (don’t use the huge stems for this bit as they can be tough). Here’s a playlist to my various chard videos - I hope that helps kzread.info/head/PLm6fPlrI_KbJFLCfPaCMOHlEe8MC6mb3Z

Hi, can I ask how comparable your last dehydrator is to the new one? are the times shorter? Is it bigger? I have been dehydrating chard leaves at 55 degrees but in a similar dehydrator as your old one but it is taking 8-12 hours. I find dehydrating the stems is taken 14+ hours and is not really energy efficient so I will now freeze using your method. :-) Thank you and thank you for the video

Hi there, new one is way better and loses less air than my stackable one. Size wise it's a different shape - more like a microwave turned sideways. I'll measure it and come back to you. I really like it. I'm lucky as we've got solar panels so I can use that for dehydrating but yes it does take a while.

Hi there, I use it like a 'Supergreens powder' in ways like smoothies, and adding to soups or stews (at the end to keep as many nutrients as possible) . use in small amounts and get extra green boost. Hope that helps
