PRESERVING RAG WORM

We all end up buying more bait than we use and often this gets thrown away. Because it will only keep for a fairly short time just left out or in a fridge.
So this is a couple of ideas on trying to preserve it.
The frozen ones we left frozen for a couple of days, no reason to think that a longer period would leave them any different.
Anyhow give them a try and let me know in the comments what you think and how you got on.

The ones I put in the tub and in fridge are still perfectly usable after three days and don't look to have deteriated. Further updates to follow

Thank you, personally I tend to give unused bait to somebody still fishing. Even though I could put mine back in shop. Thing is rag preserved like this keeps a long time in the freezer so handy for last minute decisions to go out.

Very interesting! Years ago ( about 50 !) I used to salt black lug and keep it in a jar with lid. It preserved well but it's so long ago I can't remember if they caught any fish....😂😂😂

Hi Kerry, yes often done in the good old days when we had to work hard for our baits and didn't want to waste any. Black Lug gutted and salted would last pretty well. In fact it is a fairly tough bait, even the frozen stuff takes no hurt from being refrozen, some say it improves it. Can do the same with Slipper Limpet and that definately improves it. For those who don't know what we are on about, the thing was to put a layer of salt followed by a layer of bait then another of salt and so on until you filled a glass jar and put on an airtight lid. leave it in a cool dark place

@@kerryfoster1 Absolutely, mind you the old way we could take them out and any not used simply stayed in the jar for next time

I imagine that soaking the worms in brine is to fill them with antifreeze (salt) so they don't become stiff sticks after thawing.

Could well be the case, I really don't know but they seem to be the better end result. Seems a reasonable idea

Don't know but if you are thinking of worms for coarse fishing. Generally they keep pretty well in a tub of soil live

This is just salting the worms. I found I can keep worms alive for up to a week in the fridge if the news paper is regularly changed.

Absolutely, especially if you use a dedicated bait fridge. House fridge usually far too cold, ragworm needs around 12 degrees any colder is not good. Lugworm as cold as you like. This is so they can remain frozen and good to use indefinitely. In the fridge seaweed is better than paper

Like most tackle shops we recycle prodigious amounts of newspapers. Be an issue when its all online only, have to buy paper to wrap stuff.

Metholated spirits is far better to preserve worms and shell fish . salt is OK for prawns crabs and fish.

Never heard of that idea, not sure I'd want my worm reeking of meths. Then again would create a scent trail.
