I am so glad I am not the only one who has been personally victimized by a bunny ear cactus!! I think if you just don’t touch it, you’ll be good. The main problem is they look soft and lure us in to touch them 😂

Please don't do this! Individual plugs are not rated to put out the same amount of electricity as power bars, and pulling more power through a plug than it's rated for can start a fire! There are smart bars available that would be much safer.

Hello!!! 👋 Before you toss your chicken farm try what I did! My alocasia heterophyla rapidly declined and low and behold I had ROOT mealies everywhere! I didnt wanna give up on him so here is what I did! Remove all soil! Did a full dunk of the plant in dishsoapy water for 48 hours minimum. This doesn't affect the existing roots or anything and it'll just drown the mealies. You can prob put your chicken farm in a giant bucket of water with like a tablespoon of dishsoap since yours is so big and jjst let it soak for 48 hours. Then after I did a hydrogen peroxide soak of the plant for 24 hours just to be safe that they were completely dead and repotted in fresh soil and threw it into my planty cabinet for rehab! Now hes fully recovered has beautiful 3 new leaves and NO mealies! Very healthy root system and ill have to repot him soon before taking him out because he filled the starbucks cup with roots which is so amazing! It took a few weeks but just continue to care for it as normal adding the super thrive in water as fertilizer helps a lot while it's recovering. Hopefully this helps and maybe gives you some hope!!

How good are smart plugs. Them with Alexa are so good. You can set them to turn on at sunrise and off at sunset each day so it adjusts with the seasons if you wanted. I ask it to turn them off if I want them off earlier than scheduled ie watching a movie and don’t want the glare. I also use my grow lights as a bit of home security so it always looks like someone is home. Super handy to even be able to turn lights on and off when you’re away from home. With your Hoya Chicken Farm, would you consider spraying it and then chuck it outside for spring/ summer and let the local bugs do their thing? In Australia, we have white oil (aerosol) and something called scale gun. These are amazing for getting rid of scale and mealys (just have to leave them out of direct light for a day or so due to the oil and potential to burn). I usually only have to thoroughly spray once, occasionally twice. Otherwise I often just chuck them in my yard somewhere with suitable light/ hang it off a tree and let the bugs and ants do their thing and 99% of the time are fine. Also I’ve always wanted a bunny ear cactus but like asparagus ferns, they are banned where I live and aren’t sold in stores. Looks like I’m not missing out on too much lol Loving these videos. Inspires me to get focus and organised with my collection especially over “winter” which is still 20+ degree days 😂 but I’m much more enthusiastic about getting things done when it’s not 35 degrees and humid.

That bunny eared cactus - as a young kiddo, my parents took cuttings from my grandparents’ plant. Put it all in a box in the back of our station wagon. We drove home with the windows open and the tiny little brown spines flew all over the car and all over us!! It was awful. Never drive with windows down with cactus in the car. 😂

I just got a variegated Maranta (and an outer variegated hoya polyneura & a dark anthurium hybrid!!) a few weeks ago!! I liked them in other people's collections, but seeing it in person (my first time going to a planty market event!) it's so much more incredible so I had to get it!! I'd love to eventually do trades with people, but most people in planty communities seem to be on the other side of Canada from me (I'm in NS and most are BC, AB, or ON😅)

The bunny ear cactus they are cute plants. I had them in the past. There furry spines you don’t really see them but they do get into your skin and is so painful you can feel them as if there inside your skin. 😣 You cannot get them out. Also they can get on your clothes too. There fluff can also come off and can be on the areas where you have them. I probably grow them outside if you really want them. Wow your Hoya Quinquenervia is growing so fast mine hasn’t given me any new leaves yet and i have it a year. Also want to say Happy one year house anniversary. 🎉Those big windows in your sitting room definitely a plus. Is actually a big space but with all your plants it feels like is hard to move around. For me i would have all my plants just at the window area on plant shelves. Also at the higher level too. Great area for succulents and cacti. That’s the way I displayed my plants at my south side window areas. And my kitchen window sills i have plants that takes the north side natural sunlights.

Hey Fern, loved this video...lots to glean from for my plant space so thank you 🙏🏼 I don't have timers on my lights and that's deliberate cos a) I don't have that many and b) when I switch them on I check on my plants then and there 😌 Your avocado toast looked scrumptious btw 🤤🤤I had toast too but went for comfort today cos I'm a little under the weather and had Peanut Butter ('Just Nuts' brand which is the healthier variety 😆) While watching/listening to you I manage to pot up my Silver Band props as well as my Iron Cross Begonia. So hopefully they will be happy and make it through the winter. It was really nice hanging out with you 🥰

the bunny ear cactus has annoying spines, it's true, but if it's not somewhere windy or is not accidentally touched it should be fine. a good tip is to wet the cactus when handling, that way the water holds the spines wet and they don't fly anywhere.

You could put 2 on a pole if that’s what you want. By dividing it you’ll be able to orient your plants correctly on the pole and you’ll probably end up with a few to sell/trade!

Don't be afraid of the bunny ear cactus, it is the only safe one in that group. You stroked it and nothing happened to you, right? I have one and touch it all the time. I did, however, buy one of the unsafe ones and it was terrible. Those little glocids came off so easily and got all over my hands and arms so quickly in a matter of minutes without me doing anything. And it was quite painful, too. I returned it promptly and got my money back. But I love my bunny ear one.

What is the plant behind you? Looks like it's on your millsbo and it has long narrow leaves. I've admired it in many videos and I know I saw one where you identified it but I can't find it. Thank you for all the planty content it's inspired me to get a lot done with my own. ❤

I got rid of my bunny ear cactus because she bit me a few times. If you can find somewhere to set it and just never touch it you’ll probably be ok. Like a pet scorpion 😂

I had 2 large bunny ear cactus that I did a trade with and even if the wind blew, I’d get tiny hair sun my skin. They hurt worse than fiberglass bc they’re so hard to get out of your skin. I left them outside during the winter and they died. Never again

Ah thank you! I find they enjoy a lot of light and consistent watering. Grow lights or a bright window have given me amazing results!

I don’t know if this questions already been asked, but with grow lights that have their built-in timer in their cord, such as Sansi grow lights, how do those work with the smart plugs? Because they turn on just fine but they just can’t turn off or turn back on. I haven’t finished your video yet, but I’ve tried Smart plugs in the past on these types of grow lights and they don’t work. So please show us or help us understand how that works with those type of grow lights, please?
