I've been a ham for over a decade. These radios are just as durable and even more capable as my Yeasu, Icoms etc. In many cases here the discount you receive is due to low wages, lack of workman's compensation, no dental / health plans etc for employees and less greedy CEO, not due to quality. Even a battery on an ICOM costs more than one of these radios.

The UV-9R is exactly what got me into ham radio. Just passed my technician test yesterday. I know it’s not great quality, but it’s purpose is not to challenge better radios. Of course ill get better radios, but the UV9R was a perfect introduction in every way

I made up several twin lead j-pole antennas with a plastic clothes pin at the end and about 20' of RG-58 to use my various VHF & UHF radios when I really need communications. A cheap fiberglass push up pole gets the height that makes ALL the difference.

I got the shorter version of the Abbree antenna. It does not fit on the UV-R9plus because of the way the water/dust-resistant socket is designed. But it does fit perfectly on my other HT's. The Powermax and the Diamond SRJ77CA fit perfectly snug in there. So there is not much of a gap if you are still worried about it being resistant to dust and water.

An excellent review. I have one of these units and, also, a yaesu vx-6. I find myself using my uv-9r much more than my yaesu because it is so easy to use. And, as you state in your video, if my uv-9r gets damaged or lost, it won't "break the bank" to replace it. 73

George, I know this is an older video but have you played with the UV-R9 PRO yet? I was looking for more info on it since the available info seems to be confusing. According to the product page on AZ they are 8w units, but a number of the reviews seem ti indicate they are 5w. Additionally there seems to be two different batteries available. The main one I'm interested in as a Prepper is the fact that you can use a type-c cable to directly charge the battery intead of having a special cord like the S9+ and others use. Just kind of wondering from a Prepper perspective if the R9 Pro with the USB battery might be the best radio to look at from the Boafeng line, even though it would require all different accessories over the UV-5R and family that uses the Kenwood pinned accessories.

My group and I have chosen GMRS as a main form of backup communication. We also have some Baofeng radios that work in the amateur radio frequencies. I have two BF-F8HP and a BTech UV-25x2 as a base radio. It’s a 25watt radio. I haven’t done any power test. The reviews on the BF-F8HP seem to say 8watts on high power. Not a whole lot difference in 8watts and 5 watts. With that said the 8watts is a little clear on the fringe of the max range. That’s in my area. I have 2watt 5watt and a 8watt radios . At about 2miles the 2watt is very choppy. Same range with the 5 watt marginally better at 2 miles . The Baofeng F-8HP at the 2 miles is the clearest. Then at 2.5 miles the 2watt is nothing but static. The 5watt is understandable. The F8HP very close to the same as the 5watt radio. All that is with stock antenna’s . On a couple of my radios I’m going to add Nagoya antenna’s the 771G and the Smiley GMRS tuned antenna. I have also thought about getting the ABBREE antenna tuned for GMRS.

@@rivershere01 Because the Ham radio bands are regulated by the FCC. They require a License to communicate on them. It is not like the old CB Radios, or the FRS radios you get at Wal-Mart. There is more to know when you operate these radios. Getting a license is not that hard. You just study a book, and then take an easy test. Get Licensed it will save money. The FCC can fine you up to $250,000 and five years in prison for not operating with a License on these bands.

That's not the easiest way to remove the clip. You have to rotate the HT up so that the bottom is pointing at 1 o'clock. From there the clip releases easily, all other positions you have to man handle as you did on the video. It's actually a natural motion if you are pulling the HT off your beltline.
