I loved watching your process because I have the same problems and find myself repainting and repainting to get rid of the little bits that go over the side, Good to know I am not the only one. I started using gesso after hearing Polly Parrish mentioning it but now will be sure to cover all parts of my box.

+Karen Avery I was a decorative painter for years and this is what I did to all of my pieces so I have just continued to seal them the same way. TFW, Sara

+Steve Johnstone Thanks so much Steve. You have really been hookin me up with some great mosaic artists on face book. Have you taken any of the Sharra Frank classes on line? I have been thinking about it.

I love your videos. The boxes are made from basswood. I used to do wood burning and basswood was wonderful for it. Thank you for sharing your wealth of information. I am so inspired now to do a polymer clay tile project. Keep them coming.

THANK YOU for this great info! I tried a painted cigar box but it was not sealed and ended up going into the trash can because I did not know to seal it first. Learn, learn, learn and this info was vital for me!!!

Also, those cigar boxes have a shiny finish sometimes too, so sanding it real good is also gonna help. TFW. Sara

What a timely tutorial! I'm going to decorate a wooden cigar box for my DIL. I applied Gesso today and will be painting it copper then applying a Proverbs 31 Woman I just sculpted and tiles. I was a little unsure how to prepare it other than the gesso so you were a great help! Thanks so much! Oh, BTW I never had much luck with the Lumiere paints either. Everything always looked streaked no matter how much I worked on it.

Newbie here. Can you tell me what the purpose of putting the Gesso on if you sand it mostly back off again? Does it help the paint adhere better or seal the wood somehow?

Hi Sara, I've been watching all of your video's but especially the clay ones. Love them all! I have a pasta maker but it rolls the clay out to 1/8 inch at its widest/thickest. Your tiles look thicker than that. Will I have to stack the sheets, then?

Hi! Thanks for the great video! Just curious, whether you've ever tried applying the paint directly to the wood, without sealer or gesso. I'm a polymer clay artist, and I've never worked with wood before, so I don't have those products on hand. Although I don't want to ruin the nice wood that I've bought.

You have a great imagination. I love the boxes. Where did you get the long legs for your blue box? Are they made from two separate pieces? I found the small ones at Joannes. We don't have an AC Moore in the San Francisco area.

I have always hated the prep stage to, because it doesn't seem to creative enough I guess. One question, do you seal the tile pieces before you glue them on or do you seal at anytime?? Thanks again for educating all us just starting out with polymer clay!!!

+Connie Scarlett I use gesso on the raw wood or I mix sealer into the base color of paint. so yes and then I varnish the wood when its done. TFW, Sara

@@myserenitycrafts I have a question after you paint on the gesso and then sand it and paint it what type of varnish do you use is it a spray varnish like Krylon Kamar Varnish, or a brush on like a Polyurethane. I do not understand this part. I love your tile pieces and have only about 10 done and am having so much fun making these. I have a friend who is a breast cancer survivor and when I saw all the tiles you made that were pink and the hope and ribbons and all the words. I just had to figure this out and make this for her for Christmas. I have watched several of your videos many times over and have watched a few times over just to see if I had missed something. I want to use a photo on one of mine and I saw where you did on one but I can not remember the name of the video you had one in. is there anything special you would do to a photo to seal it in. I can not wait to send this to her. Thank you for all the things you show us all. I love your videos. You have so much creativity and energy. and I love the little birdy as well.

Varnish with the spray. Don’t seal the picture. Unless it’s being handled everyday the piece should last a very long time. I never sealed most of my pieces and they look pretty good
