Dr. Bethany Usher spends as much time as possible in graveyards - she is a biological anthropologist who studies cemeteries from both osteological and archaeological perspectives to understand the social structure and health of past communities. Bethany directs the Students as Scholars initiative through the Office of Student Scholarship, Creative Activities, and Research (OSCAR), and serves as an Associate Director of the Center for Teaching and Faculty Excellence (CTFE). She is also a Councilor for Undergraduate Research Program Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research. Her talk discusses some of the advances that the OSCAR program has made at Mason. She also discusses how students who participate in undergraduate research, including herself, are much more prepared compared to their peers.

About TEDx:
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

It seems weird how many people encourage students to participate in research. Are many students simply not interested. I always believed that research opportunities were competitive to obtain
