PREPARING OUR PIG STY, PLANTING VEGETABLES AND MAKING WONDERFUL NEW FRIENDS - ON OUR PORTUGUESE FARM

/ @ourportuguesehomestead
Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.
Together Mariana and I, along with my father Clinton and my brother in law Lloyd, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!
In this episode we welcome you to join us in the Spring time as we continue our cherry harvest into the fourth week of the season. We are all a little tired of the cherries now and our fingers are starting to get sore, but we love what we do and we are just so happy that this year the fruit seems to be coming good, meaning we are expecting a nice end to our harvest time.
Lloyd and I start the week off by visiting Fundãos Monday market, where we buy some vegetable plugs (cabbage varieties, green and red lettuce and kohlrabi). Of course we have to stop off at a café to hydrate ourselves before we head home to work on the farm.
Once we get back to the farm we dive straight into planting the cabbages and we take a little look around the veggie patch with Tiger the cat following us, the vegetables are all looking nice and big and we succession plant with these new little plugs so to mean that the harvest should roll right through the summer season.
Afterwards we get right back into cherry picking and I talk a little bit about how the harvest has been going for us.
I harvest the first few lettuce of the year and make a big salad (blue sheep cheese with pistachio and sweet cherries) for some guests we have coming over, Maarten and Lea from Our Portuguese Homestead, a marvellous channel and two very great people indeed, I cannot wait to see them both again!
Together Maarten, Lea and ourselves partake in a little cherry picking, which was just splendid, seeing Puck, their daughter, playing with the dogs and eating cherries was super lovely and really made us all smile!
Later on I take some straw up to the pig sty and make sure it is all ready for our piglet arrival, which should be anytime in the next week or two, we hope!
Right at the end of the video I recap the goings on this week on the farm, accompanied by Mitzy, Lilly and Tiger as we all sit down on a wall by the stream.
See our journey to self sufficiency / permaculture / organic farming as expats living in Portugal, trying to produce as much of our own food planting vegetables, growing fruit trees as well as looking after all our animals, such as our chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, rabbits and sheep - Shortly pigs too!
Hobby farming with my beautiful girlfriend!
- Growing vegetables, raising meat and foraging on our cherry farm in Portugal’s Beira baixa, Fundão

@@Farmerforfun I know how difficult it is to learn a foreign language and that makes me appreciate your amazing ability to communicate with the locals even more. The Portuguese sure appreciate anyone trying and I am sure they don’t hear/care about minor mistakes. You are in the best setting to speak it, away from big cities where most are dying to practice their English, hahaha! Maybe some day we will speak... going to Gouveia next month to be with my mom and dad! Thanks for taking care of our beautiful, little PORTUGAL! ❤️

We came to see if we could find you and say Bom Dia at the market this week. We didn’t unfortunately. What are all the trees blooming in C P this week? I’m guessing plum, quince, cherrys beginning? What are the white ones? Back in our Hawaii Spring, we might be having the blooming of mango, all kind citrus, mangosteen, rambutam, longon, lichee… a different sort of orchard! I’m enjoying last year’s Portuguese cherry harvest in the form of ginjinha! Kind regards to you all and all the critters. Aloha and Adeus.

We came looking for you at the market this week… couldn’t find you, unfortunately! Nice veg starts you selected and they really got going right away. We’re approaching mid-March 2022 now and I wonder what is all that is blooming here in C P ? I’m guessing plum, quince, cherry.. the white blossom I wonder if its apple? Back in our home Hawaiian orchard and Spring… we have all kind citrus, longon, rambutan, lychee, mango, soursop and other sub tropicals. We don’t ever have a “cold snap” so never have any stone fruit. We should consider swapping farms for a harvest season?? That would be fun! We have mostly chickens, nearby are “hair” sheep. Nice to see the Dutch family. I wondered if little brother is walking now? We’ve been in Castelo Branco for over a week. Went to visit Nisa today… to see the menirs and dolmens… Kind regards to you all and to your critters. Aloha and Adeus.

Hello there Esther! Too many hours hehe! No, not really, maybe two hours in the morning and another two in the evening for the animals and the veggies, the rest of the day is filled with lots of little odd jobs, or right now it is harvesting! It just sort of becomes habitual routine really, I love my animals and I cannot wait to see them in the morning, I hope they feel the same about me too, hehe! Much love my friend! Ahh thanks my friend, but the reason is because they are not all supposed to grow into full cabbages, we plant the distancing for spring cabbages which is around the 20 / 25cm mark, then we will thin out the weaker ones as animal feed, you would of course be correct if we were trying to grow them all as market cabbages, thank you for watching my friend!
