In my business I deal with people who are in the mining business among others. A few miles away there is an underground limestone mine. A couple things people should know about underground. Near the surface it could be a temperature above 52°F but when you get down a few feet that’s what it is unless you have supplemental heat. In the winter time, the workers wear a sweatshirt because it is around 52°. In the summertime the workers wear a sweatshirt in the mine because it’s around 52°. If it’s exceptionally warm out, like during the summer the mine will take on some weather of it’s own. The cooler walls will sweat and there will be humidity hanging in the air just like a cloud. So as far as I’m concerned if I need to disappear I’ll pick one of the tunnels that they have that are a total 40 miles underground not down just around. They have various trailers underground to be used as offices and break areas so at least you’re not exposed to the coming and going of a breeze or humidity so to speak.

@@joewoodchuck3824 One of the things that most people don’t think about is moisture and liquid water. Heavy rains could flood a situation like that through no fault of your own. A mine properly develop with respect to the type I’m talking about is engineered to deal with problems like that. There are always side tunnels for ventilation and elevation changes to deal with water if you encounter it. Certainly a person could do all of that but that certainly is a lot of work. If there is a cataclysmic event, food is scarce. Burning calories would be at a maximum, food intake at a minimum. Nothing is perfect.

Since the ground appears to be clay. I'd consider making a very small clay chimney/fireplace. Even if it's only the diameter of a coke can on top of a shoebox. A flat rock above ground could disguise the little hole when troubles near by. Maybe rig a metal bar to push it up and down like a hatch/flu. A fire the size of a soup bowel will create almost no visible smoke as long as you keep it burning hot with dry wood. Besides warming and cooking. It would create a vacuum that pulls fresh air in through the entrance. Just say'n. I've heard of people suffocating in their sleep, in winter tents from having a candle lit, due to poor circulation. Looks like fun though. Wish I was there. I've about had it with society. Disappear into the forests and start building and underground mansion with a hot tub like those jungle dudes 🤣✌️♥️

Look at how they did it in Vietnam during the war! They lived in those dugouts and some went down multiple levels to multiple rooms and some of those rooms were massive. Digging is a good idea if you can find an area that is ideal.

If some what permanent I would expand it a bit , have a dome ceiling, bend rebar in a grid with expanded metal lathe. Then stucco the whole wall and ceiling . I would dig out a sleeping area ,also recesses for "items" . Then I would level out the floor and put down a flat flagstone floor. A customized small room to easily find any bugs spiders , or small animals. Digging down under a tree would offer ceiling support, you would need a saws all.
