In regards to an EMP, personally, I don't think it matters if your items are in a faraday cage or not because all the infrastructure will be fried. Lines, receivers, everything. So my focus is prepping to live without electricity. .............Really hope your feeling better, thanks for the video despite being sick.

The ground/earth debate is a tough one because if the cage gets hits first then it will dissipate to earth but if the electric grid gets hit then you could introduce pulse waves thru the earth/ground cable. A lot of variables. With the microwave, I would remove the +/- cables from inside the machine - electricity can arc across small distances. Also remove the magnetron cos if that gets activated for even a few seconds - poofff - up in smoke

A ground wire is ONLY needed if there are conductors that enter the cage itself. In the situation with your steel briefcase, no ground is needed as it is a simple shell. For the microwave however, since you have conductors that enter the steel box, grounding it is a good idea.

@J L This goes back to the ground/earth debate. If a signal isn't dissipated then it is free to potentially amplify. Especially thru electronics left in the, in Lilly's case, microwave. Try an earth spike rather than earthing thru the grid/sockets. The kind of thing you connect to aerials to protect from lightning strikes. But keep it separate from your grid ground and don't connect any electronic equipment to it. 0V is just where you set it so you can get a voltage drop and blow up equipment pretty easily

The best way to store your canned goods in the pantry is upside down, rather the right way up. This is in case a rat or mouse, or other crawling insects and bugs crawl across the top of your can and then the dirt and bacteria can fall into your food when you open it. The last thing you want if/ when the grid goes down is to have a bad case of food poisoning. It's also best practice to clean the cans when you're about to use them too.

Each can should be packed in a zip-up bag. This protects against dirt, and after you have eaten your meal, you can put it back there in order to jam against a clunky smell (e.g. a can of fish). Hope you feel better Lilly. The sad fact is, a faraday cage will not protect anything against a modern nuclear EMP, the power it too great. Both China and Russia have developed specialized nuclear devices that enhance the "E1" phase of the gamma induced EMP specifically to defeat defenses like yours, and Russia has already adapted them to their new hypersonic missiles. That's not to say they can't help, if such a detonation is far enough away, say 200 km or so, then you have an above average chance some of your devices will survive. The best defense today is to do everything in our power to make sure such weapons are never unleashed. Let's hope the powers that be are smart enough not to back anyone who possesses them into a corner where they feel they have nothing to lose by using such terrible weapons.

That's a myth. A cage can protect you from a direct lightning strike. It does have to be conductive enough for the emp to create a current in the wires; that current is what causes the skin effect and keeps the radiation out from the interior.

I appreciate your concern, but there have been no advancements to overcome the laws of physics. An electrically insulated, double-walled steel box like her microwave oven should be fine even against the worst EMP blasts that leave the house standing. Much like most other weapons, Nuclear weapons are ranged, meaning the effects dwindle with distance. If something goes off close enough to zap the powered off components inside that selfsame double-walled steel box Lily wisely chose to be one of her Faraday cages, there's little chance anything around it isn't already on fire or blown up.

The solar EMP is the speed of light burst from a solar flare, usually they cause radio blackouts for the duration of the flare. Some solar flares are coupled with a CME, these are the wind of charged particles travelling at sub-luminal speeds, much slower but still able to travel the distance in half a day (really fast) to a week (really slow) The CME needs three things to be a threat, high speed, high density and be earth facing. There is a phenomena called the ‘earth facing solar quiet’ which makes it less likely (statistically) for a sunspot group to go all-balls-out when directly facing us (that’s a good thing) If one of high speed density is ejected at earth the electronics attached to the grid are at risk. It is incorrect (in theory) to state that a solar event cannot affect non grid linked items. That purely depends on the magnitude of the flare. Given that the 1859 Carrington was estimated at an X45 (+/- 5) and also given that the research paper titled “Statistical Properties of Superflares on Solar-type Stars: Results Using All of the Kepler Primary Mission Data” gives a possibility of stars like our sun twatting out an X700 or x1000 every 3000 and 6000 years respectively, I’d say that in this eventuality, you may want to wear your brown trousers. Peace out. God bless.

When I was in the army we were told when there were substantial solar storms so we'd know to set up a retransmission station. One had our comms range down to half. The other just caused some crackling on the radio. Some of the mouth breathers were putting on extra sunblock, and running across the field to the other tracks. Ha!

@@meat-hookmakes sense for local comms. So medium/longwave I assume? (not shortwave) On the flip side, increased solar activity usually results in greater/stronger shortwave range/signal. Sunspot maximums (every 11 years) are shortwave heaven because the ionosphere acts like a mirror to bounce the signal off. I assume you must have been talking with local contacts not using so the skip distance was not a factor. Tech aside, Glad you are still living and breathing after your high risk life. I hope your losses were minimal. God bless you always

@@GwladYrHaf indeed. Just across Fort Carson. SINGARS have a max range of 40 miles if I remember right. But the hills up here cut that to a lot less.
