Preparedness for Seniors: What goes in your "Go Bag"

A "Go Bag" is a special type of emergency kit that gives you peace of mind that you and your loved ones will have the essentials you need if you are forced to leave your home quickly in an emergency or disaster situation. Stephanie Poling from the Ohio Department of Health talks about what should be in your Go Bag.

I am a 72 year old woman. I turned an old backpack into a bug out bag. I turned an old rolling suitcase into a survival bag. I have a separate go bag with food and water. I keep 2 weeks of emergency food and water, etc. in my pantry. I am prepped! Most of my neighbors don't know what prepping or a go bag are.

Dear 2 weeks isn't enough. Katrina victims didn't have back up for a month. I suggest strongly that you stock up at least 1 years of food and 3 months of that needs to be ready to eat. As in no cooking whatsoever. You may not be able to eat MRES if you have to use heating element.

It's simply not practical or possible for some people to stock up 1 year's worth of food ! Also you may have to vacate the area in an emergency anyway, and not be able to return to your home. So if she is stocking 2 weeks worth of supplies, i think that's perfectly reasonable. 🌱

Such an awesome video! This is good starter info for a 24-72 hour bug-out bag & all of this stuff is easily accessible. My dad is 82, absolutely can handle himself & is very resourceful, but with how crazy the world seems these days, it would be good for him to have something like this in case things go south. Thank you for making this video & thank you for the information!

You might want to consider adding a hand held c.b. radio or Family Radio service radios, as no license is required for those. Both will require batteries. Communication is key in a serious situation. Thanks .

Several years ago when I lived in Houston Texas there was a hurricane coming with predicted 20 to 25 feet tidal wave. Needless to say me and my dollar store bug out bag were out of there.

Also it’s important to have family, Doctors, Drug store phone number written on paper! Because if your phone dies and you don’t have any of those numbers memorized, using someone else’s phone won’t help. Also at the Dollar stores have assorted Reading glasses for $ 1.00 great to throw in to your bag in case you can’t afford or don’t have a 2nd pair.

If the phone works to call, it will likely be able to help you find the number, even if it's not saved in your phone.

In a true grid down situation 12-18 months is not out of the question. Plan for an extended period of time..long after your bag is depleted. Communication will be sparse at best, if at all. A few days supply is very helpful, yet your long term survival depends on looking well beyond the first few days. One Key? Know where you'll get WATER.

Good video Weigh your go bag to see if you can carry it for extended periods of time, you might be walking to unass the AO, ie; get away from what you dont want to be in the path of. LOL I purchased 2 of the same kind of backpack for my go bag I filled one with what i will need to go bye-bye then i weighed it I took my other pack and put 27.5 lbs of sand in it 3 times a week i put my sand pack on and go on a walk Second idea - quarterly empty your go bag out on the table and inspect the contents make sure everything works and is in good condition Its would suck to be in the dark trying to take some medication and spilling half the contents of meds because your flash light batteries are dead then finding out you had no water because your bottle water had gotten a hole in it from vibration of being in your car trunk and leaked out Fire department crews inspect their equipment at the start of every shift

Also on paper ALLERGIES! and DRUGS THAT YOU CANT HAVE. is just or more important IF YOU CANT SPEAK! if you need treated for shock or coma from blood sugar or need meds for something. Seizures ect. ( also all drugs with amounts should be written down with their genetic other name) drugs are normally given different names DEPENDING ON THE MANAFACHTUER. not the type of drug. Ask your pharmaceutical company for a list of all names your drugs go under. Even if your insurance doesnt cover it. GET A PAPER LIST. and what its for. Get a pill cutter . Their at any drug store cost is a couple dollars. You may need it.

wife, dog meds, CPAP, couple days of clothes, wallet. That would do it, but I'd still want some of the other stuff below more clothes, shoes, winter gear, summer gear generators, batteries, electronics, 8 months worth of food. bicycles, hand and power tools, emergency household supplies, emergency medical supplies, dog food, cleaning supplies, solvents, lubricants, adhesives, tarps, chain, rope, tape, detergents, shampoos, soaps, zip ties, tarps, lumber, hardware canning, dehydrating and fermenting equipment 12 firearms, 10k rounds of ammo, safe, associated tools and supplies books and manuals reloading equipment and supplies passport, ID, insurance, banking, credit, cash musical instruments, jewelry, Hell, I need a 53 foot shipping container and a week with three friends to load it. Screw it, I'm staying. What's the worst that can happen. My heirs have copies of the documents.
