Premultiply and unpremultiply basics, Nuke

If you have ever wondered what premultiply is and what it does to an image, then in this video I will show you understand it. Also here I have demonstrated what un-premultiplication is and when to to use it while working on comp.

Loving all the tutorials. Subscribed! Quick comment though. Designer should incorporate a "Dots" system similar to Nuke's Dots as a way to organize the lines of graphs. Small thing, but keeps the whole thing looking clean.

Hey mate, the difference is mainly in how the color space is handled by nuke. The read node converts any color space into linear. So the premult option makes sure that Nuke unpremults the image before conversion and then premultiples the alpha. Making things mathematically accurate. To see any changes observe the partially transparent regions while changing color space and toggle this option. Personally I use whatever option that gives the best result! hope that helps.

Finally, some clarity on the simple but illusive concept of pre-multiplication. Thanks a lot. Can you also teach us something about keying, like getting finer details in hair or reflection?

Siddharth Singh Couldn't reply sooner since I was busy mate, I have planned a few tutorials that I want to complete first, which are the basics of any CGI before getting into keying or working on live plates of any kind. It is in the works, just that it will take me a few months to get it up.
