    I edit for a living (using premiere, because clients expect it). I work primarily as a broadcast colorist and all of the projects I’ve worked on I round trip to DaVinci for color grading. I just started actually using the editing portion of DaVinci and it’s really satisfying. You can also change the keyboard shortcuts to the premiere shortcuts you are probably used to using.

    That probably is the best way to describe edting in resolve..."satisfying" The first thing I did was change keyboard layout to premieres and then I programmed the macros on my logi 2s mouse for quick cuts. I usually use one button on my mouse to quick save and I realized resolve saves automatically so now I have another button to program. Again...you nailed it when you said "satisfying" 👌

    Thanks. I'm switching. Used the free version for a recent project to grade log footage. I was amazed at how much better the result looked. One of the main reasons I hear about people not switching is the word about having to edit past projects. Here's an escape trajectory I've used with other subscription softwares ... 1 Cancel your subscription 2 Resubscribe when ever you need to use it for a past project 3 Cancel right after so you don't forget (subscription is good until end of the month period) 4 Edit the client's project 5 Deliver the edit 6 Go back to Resolve You can work in the subscription costs into your charges to your client. Obviously this works best if you're solo. Also, isn't there another subscription you have to pay to use Pr as a team?

But you can use your own private server then there is no cost to using Davinci cloud. 5 bucks to help pay for data management is an extremely reasonable ask. You can also sync with Dropbox. Not to mention they're coming out with a feature called Presentations which will allow people to virtually meet within resolve without using zoom or discord. All this to say Black magic is the goat. I love how every approach they take to a service they think of every consumer. Need cloud storage? Sure 5 bucks. Have your own server? No problem Primarily use Dropbox? No problem Like thanks man. I have been using Premiere since 1995. I thought CS6( 2012 ) was great. I got CS2019, but I hated doing stuff in their other programs( Audition; After Effects; Illustrator; Encore ), then having to bring that work back into PPro - what a PAIN. I mean the CS2019 whole suite I got was $1650. Then they went to 'cloud' .. at what .. $49mo. ? I loved your simple, easy-to-understand explanation of D R. I subscribed to your channel. I find myself sharing pretty much the same situation. However the one factor that is keeping me from switching 100% to DaVinci resolve is not the price but instead the fact that premiere is what my team edits on. We do a lot of pr file sharing with projects so everything needs to be interchangeable within the team.

  • @JaredHoyman

    That is big deterrent when others don't want to switch and unfortunately that is why I I have been doing 100% of my edits over the last several months. FCPX is also a brilliant all-in-one. Very simple to use for colour grading and editing plus, for effects, has a host of plug-ins and fantastic motion effects available from 3rd party sources. To me, Premier Pro always seemed over-complicated for what to does.

    How do you manage to keep your media linked? I liked Davinci when I first started using it a few years ago. Then something happened and every time I'd go out of a project and come back in, all my media links were gone! Even when I re-linked they were gone again the next time. No, I am not moving my files. I kept hoping it was some upgrade glitch and would get fixed, but it's been a few years now and it never gets fixed. What's up with that?? If you have a solution, I'm interested because I'd like to go back to it but I refuse to spend hours on a project only to have Davinci make more work for me. Well you are right, but just partially. Try to move any pic above your movie on the timeline and click on the pic in the preview window - nothing happens, you can't move it in any direction, you can't change it's size, etc. In PP after one or two clicks on the picture, borders and corners would appear making manipulating the picture very easy just by using your mouse. You simply can't do that in DV. And that's not an intuitive thing. @@JaredHoyman

    The problem is not about Premiere. It's about Photoshop and After Effects. I start most of my projects on Photoshop, and tehn animate layers and add vfx on AE. I use Premiere after 80% of the job is done, in this case, I see no reason to migrate to Davinci. How could I work my layers on Fusion, for example? Nodes are like Greek to me

  • @JaredHoyman

    @JaredHoyman

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm still learning, but nodes are making more and more sense. They are like organized layers that are easier to categorize and keep track of. It's nice having it all in one software than moving between a few for a full project edit. I will tell you my macbook pro max with m2 chip cuts and dices 10bit, 12bit 4k through 8k as if it was butter. The native codec hardware support you have with apples new chips along with davinci resolve does make premiere look like a turtle even if the pc has a 4090 rtx gpu. It is a onetime payment for studio version forever at $295. You can also use free non studio to get used to the feel, but the power is in the studio.

    I started with Avid -> to Final Cut -> back to Avid -> then to Premiere -> then to Resolve. Now I am Premiere and Resolve. Why? Yes Resolve is a great tool... but it can be overcomplicated, buggy and frustrating to do simple compositing tasks. Sometime Premiere just makes more sense to use when you just need it done quickly. Motion gfx? Have someone giving you PS/illustrator documents for animation? Need to whip up a quick edit with temp fx for offline only? Premiere is the go to. Need to edit using cam files? Grade and do final online and output for Broadcast? Have a bit more time to spend on compositing? Resolve. The right tool is what gets you paid... and my entire Adobe subscription is paid off in a days work. Sort of a no brainer for me still... Blackmagic is a hardware company. They rely on users buying into their ecosystem. Panels, io boxes, etc. That's where they make their money. They both have pros and cons. I remember when an Avid Media Composer was 80k just to set yourself up.... everything is so cheap now. We are lucky to have options.

  • @JaredHoyman

    @JaredHoyman

    Жыл бұрын

    That is all so true. It is relative and its all relatively inexpensive. Just like you, premiere suite is paid off in a half day's work. I did go all in and committed to do all my edits in resolve, so I have found work around and my work flow has speed up so fast that I don't think I could do that in premiere anymore. At the the end of the day it's a tool and if it helps you complete your task efficiency then go with that tool. BTW....LOVE YOUR USER NAME. I'm Laughing in my office as I type this.

No matter how great the promise is, no matter how much you think you can change her, she'll always revert to crashes and fall back into failing the trust you put into her and all the work you invested into that relationship gets washed away. DaVinci is the not as hot, but reliable chick with a good head on her shoulders and she won't stress you out. I really feel like there is no way for me too decide... Like seriously. I used FCPX for a long time, now about 2 weeks ago I needed to do some work in Premiere and After Effects (Beginner in both), and I need to say, the interface is like so "boring"... but it just has some crazy features... Mocha AE, like I don't know anything that does tracking so well and it is not even Mocha Pro... Also the Text based Editing is like a dream for KZread Videos (yes I know, Resolve has it to, but I think not for German language). But here comes the problem, everything else, except tracking and Animation / Motion Graphics, Resolve wins easy... The interface top notch, the hardware (speed editor and mini panel) world class, the grading ability insane. Overall plugins for fast videos (motionVFX) better in Resolve. But then there are these things as I mentioned, text based editing, support for Apple ProRes RAW (DaVinci would need a converter), etc. I am feeling like I need to get both... Also Adobe has things like illustrator, you just make a graphic, put it to after effects, animate it and drag it to premiere like this is soooo easy. Idk how I would do this with Resolve... But as I said, then I get drawn to Resolve because of the Speed editor and the color grading features PLUS the hardware for it (Mini Panel). Anyone who can bring in some other thoughts? Should I get both? Where do I get the Plugins from motionVFX - Resolve or Premiere? Are there things I don't know yet? I would really appreciate any help or input so I can make a decision soon...

    Out of all of the editors I feel like Resolve is more consistent in updating and improving. I do have FCP, but never used it for a project. It's a "just in case" type scenerio. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "text base", but if you mean automatic caption then Resolve now has it and it works amazing. You can create an entire transcript from your video and put it in a word doc. You can also delete specific words and it will delete those parts of the video.

The main reason is that almost everybody seems to use the Adobe suite and therefore it best supported. Let me give an example what I mean. I am a subscriber of Storyblocks. I noticed that they have a Premiere Pro plugin but I don't see a Davinci Resolve plugin. I see they have Premiere Pro templates and After Effects templates but don't have Davinci Resolve templates. If I search for "Premiere Pro" in Google then I get much more results then when I search for "Davinci Resolve". What I am afraid for is what I see with Linux vs Windows. Linux is great and probably more used then Windows, although many people don't realize it when they are using Linux. As a desktop consumer OS however I have the feeling you have to be either an expert or you should not love yourself when you switch to Linux. Yes, Linux is great and I mean that. It does however not run my software. That is what I am afraid for with Davinci Resolve. Where can I e.g. find templates that I can use? Are there just as much templates for Davinci Resolve as for Adobe? How about support? Are there just as much tutorials for Davinci Resolve as for Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc. Does Davince Resolve even have photo editing software? I don't mind switching to something else if it is pure better but I have my doubts.

    Download the free version and use it. I have found there is more templates and options inside the software than premiere. I'm not too familiar with story blocks, but I do use adobe's free stock video and photo library, which you have access to if you have lightroom. I was a premiere user for 17yrs and I have not looked back after going to resolve. There are tons of tutorials out there on it and resolve is the industry standard for color grading in Hollywood. I would not put it in the same category as Linux. I would compare it more to final cut in the sense it's a major player.

    @@JaredHoyman I can install the software. That is no problem. I am a noob with Premiere Pro but I have already spend hundreds of hours learning the basics. That is worth more to me than the 60 Euro per month that I pay for the license. I would be more then happy to switch over and start learning Davinci Resolve if I was convinced that it would be better in every way possible. I try to get an answer on that question by watching some YT video's but most video's about this topic are highly biased. It seems almost like a war between titans with all the drama involved. I have yet to find a video with the pros and the cons explained in a somewhat neutral way. I am not married to the software that I use. I have seen plenty of video's of people that say they are leaving Premiere Pro but all seem to think there is nothing good about Premier Pro suddenly. I have a hard time believing that one product is so much superior over the other while so many people are still using the "inferior" product. I hope I explained it a bit better now where my doubt is coming from. I have to say that I really appreciate the time you spend on answering the questions of your viewers. Not many YT do that anymore. So, thanks.

    @@annoholics Thank you! I appreciate the questions. I think the best way to explain the shift in the industry for video editing is "gradual". It seems like many people in the last few months have moved over to Davinci from premiere, but I don't believe its out of the blue or out of "left field". Davinci Resolve has been around for over a decade, but it wasn't until the last couple yrs where you could actually edit start to finish in the software. Originally people would take premiere projects over to color grade and then bring them back over to premiere to finish the project. Resolve has now made it where you can, cut, edit, grade, add special effects, sound edit and export all in the same software just by clicking on tabs. Even Premiere doesn't allow that. They require you to use audition for sound and after effects for special effects. What has made it easy for me to switch is that resolve has a "premiere" layout you can choose, so when you edit you are using all the same short keys as premiere. It feels the same to edit, but just with a little different look. Premiere may fall into the category of PC where Resolve is like an Apple. It just works. I can go on forever, but the BIG thing is that it saves your projects real time so if you have a crash or power outage it starts back where you left off. I never hit the save button anymore, whereas in premiere I created a short key on my mouse where I clicked it every few seconds because I have had projects crash without saving. I played with the free version before going all in ;)
