Premature Atrial Contractions: ECG Interpretation for Nurses

Premature Atrial Contractions: ECG Interpretation for Nurses
Understanding what an ECG reading is and how to interpret it for clinical practice is an important nursing skill. Being able to identify normal sinus rhythm is the first step to recognizing abnormal rhythms.
To access case studies, workbook and other tutorials, Register for the ECG Interpretation Level 1 and Level 2 Courses here nurseminder.th...
In this lesson, we will discuss premature atrial contractions (PAC)
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
Identify physiological and nonphysiological factors that can result in a premature atrial contraction
Define the features of a premature atrial contraction
Compare and contrast premature atrial contractions to normal sinus rhythm
Discuss 4 different types of premature atrial contractions
Identify treatment options of premature atrial contractions
Nursing students, nurses, and other health care professionals benefit from learning these signs and symptoms as they are the frontline eyes of the healthcare system.

Beautiful video. Can you please tell me if the PAC couplets are dangerous?

PACs affect blood volume, when the atria contracts prematurely, the heart has not filled fully, resulting in less blood pumped to the body. The concern is more around what might be causing them. If it is aging, medications, disease. One of the rules of ECG is to always do a complete assessment to explore root causes that may guide interventions

@@NurseMinder thank you for your answer. I am concerned that a couplet can trigger afib or another arrhytmia.

you're absolutely fantastic at explaining this. i really struggle to interpret 12 leads, which are usually taken when either symptomatic or new changes in anaesthetic recovery in my role. do you have strategies for reading 12 lead?

To begin, you will see what you need to see on the bottom line of the 12 lead. It is an overall picture. The remaining leads help you hone in on the zone of concern (I believe I talk briefly about this in an earlier video)

Right, I had a skim at your other videos after I commented and will definitely watch the entire series in detail. Looking at bottom line is a great tip, thank you! @@NurseMinder
