Uv resin isn’t really made to be cured in a large amount, it’s better to do smaller things like embellishments or thin layers

@@Rybonator TBH I think it gets too hot to cure properly if there's a lot. Or maybe it's the fumes? I've noticed UV resin seems to get really hot and really fume-y if you cure a lot at once. I use UV resin a lot because I have never had luck with 2 part resins and my larger works always come out wonky unless I do the in thinner layers.

@@Rybonator Half an inch is pretty thick for UV resin in that volume--it shrinks a lot and crazes like heck. Some people have had success with flash curing it for about 3-5 seconds under strong uv light (since most of the heat is generated during the initial exposure), adding another layer, flash curing, etc. For something the size of that mold I'd pour probably 1/2 cm at a time and pray. Some brands shrink a lot more than others which makes it hard to get a smooth casting, as the cured resin pulls away from the sides and the new resin partially fills it.

Sophie and Toffee actually does sell magnets specifically for these dice boxes although they come in packs of 10 I think even though you need 6 magnets per box. As other people have said, UV resin doesn’t usually do too great in larger pours. I think I’ve used that same brand of resin before and had some problems getting it to cure. I also believe it has some shrinkage as it cures which might explain the weird texture. I do really like my sophie and toffee dice box mold, but it has similar problems to their dice molds, as it is pretty fragile for silicone, and they don’t recommend using a lighter or strong UV light with it. I feel like both of those are large downsides for a resin mold, but the finished dice boxes do look pretty nice.

uv resin is actually TERRIBLE for thick pieces, it's only good in small layers. At the VERY least, it has a horrible tendency to warp and bend into weird shapes because it shrinks way too much. Sophie and Toffee makes some uv resin that's supposed to limit that problem, and it's A BILLION TIMES BETTER, but it can still have that problem that becomes more and more noticeable the bigger the pieces become.

so a few things from someone who has a resin business :) large flat molds that you have to move? pour them on a tile so you can move them without spilling use rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to pop surface bubbles instead of fire to extend the life of your molds. Fire opens silicon pores and resin can bond permanently to that. Alcohol is not only safe with silicon (in small amounts) but does some work to cool the resin to keep it from getting too hot in thicker pours, something that also shortens your mold's life. please don't use or encourage x-acto knife use for cutting off flashing, it's incredibly dangerous for your fingies, use clippers instead uv resin should neeeeever be used for projects this big, it will smoke, heat, warp, bubble crack etc. in large amounts. Instead use it for doming tops to get rid of any of those lips left around the edges and those pesky mylar flakes that tend to poke out. (Doming can really sharpen up a piece!)

So as someone who uses a bunch of UV resin and a lot of Sophie and toffee products. It's best to use epoxy for projects of this size as UV resin can sometimes do this. It's where some of it will set and heat up a lot creationg possible warping or bubbles while other parts don't fully set or take longer to set. The best way I have found to avoid it is using a UV nail set up that have a mirror on the base.

I don’t do UV resin much but I do know it’s possible to basically over cook it if it’s too large a pour. It’s kinda like cooking meat. If your pan is too hot the outside cooks way to fast and then the meat is still raw inside. The Uv light is the heat this scenario, it’s working from the outside in so the center of a thick pour can be “raw” but the outside of it can be over cooked.

I've used that specific resin for a dice coffin I did a while ago. When it comes to using that much resin, it's much better to do a gentle, smooth pour getting out as many air bubbles as you can, and let it sit in direct sunlight for a few hours. (I put a clear bowl over it to prevent any... undesirables... from getting in). I think it took about four hours for the coffin to cure enough that I could pull it out safely, then another 3 back in direct sunlight just to be on the safe side. And that coffin was black. Turned out great!

You definitely want to do UV resin in thinner layers as opposed to one big one when it's a mold this big (though tbh even dedicated UV resin artists will use AB for this anyway). I've seen a lot of UV resin artists do things in multiple passes even when it's on pieces that are are half an inch thick tops, though how many will depend on what effects they're going for. I use the same brand of UV resin as you in all my dice making as well and I tend to zap the mold for about a minute before turning it upside down and zapping it again so I know it's solid enough to make sure all of the inside parts get enough light. It might've helped in this case since no light could pass through the turntable on the bottom. I am genuinely baffled and saddened by how much guff UV resin tends to give you, it's my favorite type and I've never had issues like these gfhdfjdsk

I have a cool idea for dice that I’ve been trying and it works pretty well for the look it gives, it makes a set of resin dice look like a set of rough cut gemstone dice You start by making a standard set of transparent dice with a little bit of dye depending on what gemstone you want You do all the normal procedures for curing and pressure casting, it’s the polishing that makes it looks this way You start by taking a small set of channel locks or a vice, or just anything that can crush the resin and make some small blemishes, not deep, just to kind of make it natural looking, then you take some rough sandpaper and scratch up the whole thing, not enough to rub away the numbers, but to scratch it up a lot. The secret to making this look good is by taking a glittery paint and lightly covering each face with it, then rubbing away the excess so that it’s just in the scratch marks, gives a really rough and natural look. Best part is, if you accidentally damage the dice while using them, they just look better Might make an interesting video idk?

I had a similar issue with UV resin and that mold in particular. I literally dissected my finished piece and found that the dividers between the dice segments HAD cured better, but the core of the vault had not. I tried again with making it in layers...and it kinda worked, but I won't be doing that again in a hurry. If you have a number of hours and a lot of patience, sure, UV resin could work. I'll stick to epoxy :)

I ended up having to to use some extra silicone around the mold to make mine a bit stronger, it's not something you need to do but does keep things more stable and helps avoid the mold warping over time (happened with my first one from the dice box earlier in the year, the re-enforced one is okay so far) the UV resin was 100% a issue with pouring the UV in such a thick mold. You can use UV resin with the mold but need to do layers.

The reason why uv resin isn't meant to be cured in large/deep quantities is because it cures unevenly in the light. The surface will cure before the bottom cures and that trapped resin will contract and shift, creating uneven surfaces. Even in thin layers, the light beads to hit the resin all at once. Sometimes you might get similar problems if the resin is super opaque. Depending on the resin you use, there could also be some shrinkage that kinda mess up the piece. I honestly don't use uv resin in big molds just because it tends to be so expensive vs. casting resin

UV resin is very picky when it comes to being used in molds. UV resin is meant for thin pours, usually doming or used in open bezels. I know Sophie & Toffee have a UV resin that is meant to be used in molds, but I haven't used that yet. This box mold is definitely too big to be used with UV resin. My guess as to what cause all the bubbles is it boiled while it cured. UV resin heats up while curing and when you get a big batch like you had, it can boil and leave you with tons of bubbles. If you really want to use UV resin with these molds, thin layers is the best way to go. Though I don't recommend that at all. Just get two part resin and use that. You'll get WAY better results.

I have had that issue a TON with sophie and toffee UV resin. I have the dice molds you are about to review in the next video and am veey interested to see if you have some of the same problems I have been having. I tried to use UV resin in the dice molds and they would never cure fully! I discovered that everything I had made that had any mica to color it only cured on the outside and basically all my dice would crack like eggs when you put any pressure on them. Even thin charms I made with bezels from their website following their instructions for coloring them with the mica they provided still was liquid on the inside. 😑

@@Rybonator I don't mind the dice molds themselves for 2 part resin, except for no matter how hard I try to make sure there is enough resin in the sprew hole and some extra on top I still get a divet right where the hold is on the lid a lot of the time. 😩 The tip about adding resin to the inside of the squish lid before closing them from a previous video was helpful though. I dont have a pressure pot set up yet because it's just not in the budget right now, so I know some air bubbles are unavoidable, but the consistent divets are annoying for those molds. I resorted to mixing more resin after they cure and just putting a tiny bit to fill the imperfections.

oh and an update on the mini dice mold. i clamped it between two pieces of plexiglass and it eliminated like 98% of the flashing issues. then i used some uv resin from my 3d printer (very runny liquid) and put a needle tip on a pipette and managed to get some really nice looking little dice. a few small bubbles but nice looking. just put enough pressure on the plexiglass to squeeze it to eliminate the flashing put too much pressure on it and it will deform the dice. If you were to do the same with 2 part resin and then take sections of popsicle sticks cut to the right length you can turn the top of the mold into a spot for extra resin and put in a pressure pot.
