A precision air, bearing motion stage built, using New Way 50 mm diameter flat pad bearings is used to explain how the ball system works and is adjusted. It is also compared to a similar bonded bearing stage. The preload that can be applied by using the adjustment screws is very effective at keeping a high pressure under the bearing, and so keeping contamination out from under the bearing sandblasting grit is poured onto the guideway to illustrate the self cleaning capabilities of these bearings.
