It's called Muh-patti. Our Monks and nuns (belonging to the Terapanth Sect of Jainism) wear this all the time. Apart from while having food. They wear to avoid Violence of Micro living organisms. There is also a scientific reason behind this. When we speak out , hot air is released from the mouth and when it is mixed with the cold air outside , the very subtle living organisms in the atmosphere might get killed. I might not be very clear or absolutely right about my explanation. But I am a Terapanthi Jain myself and this is what I know. So , this Muh-Patti is worn to observe and practice non violence , to the extent possible.
