Mike, I just got done preg checking my 60 cows this week as well. I appreciate, and understand the “damnit” when a cow you love turns up open. Thank you for sharing you’re journey, I have come to watch your program for advice and insight after my father passed away unexpectedly and left the cattle farm in mine and my husband’s hands.

KZread always likes to keep life interesting by the variety of suggested videos that’s unrelated to all the stuff one normally watches. I’ve lived on farms off & on for over half my life. I was only around cows as a kid and spent my extra time with my horses (not a working farm persay) anyway, I enjoyed your video and seeing your cows & set up.

we just hauled 4 calves to another farm this morning and it is amazing how unsafe calves can be. As you know, they don't like to be alone. They get scared in a new environment. Well, we got 3 loaded and the 4th was in the barn. so we locked the 3 in the stock trailer in the front and left the back open to load this 4th. That kind of left #4 alone and scared and he couldn't see the others and he turned on us to charge us when he got cornered. we finally had to open the front of the stock trailer to let him have full view of his buddies and then he loaded peacefully. glad you tell us all about safety. unexpected things can happen and if you don't have experience to read a cows temperament or intentions, it can be dangerous.

During that time I spent $5 to learn how to AI at MS State University. I was please to get a 85% first time set. That $5 was the best money I spent in my farming life. I only had about 30 head so it was easier than your setup. Again thanks for taking me back to those days. South MS farmer.

That looks it's a awesome tool, I wish us farmers here in MI has a tool like that. Yeah sometimes it stinks of having a cow that isn't pregnant, we get that sometimes sure it p,o us off, but we just look at it as if she's a good / protected mother, then we give her a second chance. So I understand what you mean Mike by keeping a cow that's not pregnant, is wasting feed and money, but sometimes you should also look at the expect of you really want to let her go just because she's not pregnant or give her one more chance now if you have one too protected where if you got hit form her, as in charge which if she knows who you are, then you get rid of her. But inerways good video of that:)

Mike you should put up cows for "adoption" for a year for a predetermined cost. Like zoos do with there animals. I haven't figured out the specifics but this would help offset the cost of keeping at least some of the cows on the ranch because the contract is only a year it would allow you to sell cows or do what ever you need to do with them at the end of that time period.

My view is of a cow not pregnant is not earning ores keep and send them out. Pick a calf to replace her and to eat her hay. I see it as running at 100 percent capacity. Of course knowing your about ten percent short in pregnancy test. You plan to replace then ahead of time. At the same time it is replacing the heard which one would do anyway.

@@charleydan Ofcourse that's an aspect for culling cows, old, bad legs and feet, bad udder. But open cows and understanding why there open is just as much of culling as physical appearance. Then of course there is the feed to cow ratio. So l can understand Mike, he has to cull anyways so open goes first. Then if needed he can chisel them down further. I think everyone culls the same in Beef. Ratio might change in type of cull but yes you always need a certain amount of replacements.

Do you vaccinate before you know shes pregnant? Just noticed that they were vaccinated before you knew they were pregnant but maybe I saw wrong.

No we don't vaccinate the open cows. However if one is pregnant and old, and on the cull list we will still vaccinate her as she will be sold as an empty cow to another producer. Thanks - Mike

At first some were getting vacc'd and back pour before being confirmed, once they all got on the same page, they didn't get vacc'd or back pour if they were open.

Why don't you add those again with the bulls, if they still don't, sell them

He can't afford to let them stay at the farm. If you have watched previous videos, the farm is lacking feed this winter. That's why at the end, even with 16 cows leaving, he's still worried that that may mean there are too many still left to feed.

The cow's that you love, do you give them a 2nd chance to produce if their found to be not pregnant? It couldn't be that many right? Artificial insemination would fix the problem if it weren't a biological problem.

  • @zacherynielsen3453

The main problem would be the cost. The sale of the calves is how they pay for the ranch's expenses, so if a cow is open and they kept her, that'd be a year's worth of expenses into that cow with no return. I think he explains this in one of his older video's

Also artificial insemination can be a lot of work and take up a lot of your time and is very hands on. It's usually not worth the time and cost if it's a small number of cows and you've got a larger operation to run.
