Precision Please - Adjusting a Makita LS1018L

My Makita Mitre-Saw didn't cut anywhere near accurate. So I had to reset her. But the manual wasn't that helpful. For there may be others with the same problem, I thought it would be great to share what I know.
I'm sorry for using wrong grammar and words. English is not my mother tongue. I'm still learning and try my best.

Thanks a lot, mate! This was a great help to calibrating my Makita saw. Finally I did it! For calibrating the laser I used a wider piece of scrap plywood, fixed it with a clamp against the fence as I would hold it during a real cut, and made a small scoring cut of about 1 mmm depth. I used this cut as an indication line against which I adjusted the laser line.

I have looked everywhere for information on setting up my 1018L. It just would not go to 45deg in the horizontal. Your explanation on how to do this was a “eureka moment” for me. Have now adjusted my machine perfectly. Thank you for your video with a special mention of your many safety instructions.

Hey @makitatools give this guy a hat... at least. Great video with very clear instructions for tuning Makita mitre saws. I just bought this model saw... and it is the first Makita that was not better than perfect out of the box. But i did know this happens sometimes...you just need to dial it in to get great cuts! Thanks for taking the time to help explain the process!!

Thank you. That was a truly informative and helpful video. We'll explained. To the point. And I thought you repeating the need to unplug was seriously spot on. Those blades are beasts. I really appreciate your effort. It will come in handy when I go to adjust mine. Well done 👍

Yes a good video, I took mine a bit further and spend a couple of hours pulling it apart and deburring all machined surfaces/edges with my needle files and a fine stone. Now all moving parts are so smooth, it feels like a $2000 saw, well worth the effort.

Thanks a lot for your comprhensive video. I was wondering if you edited one about troubleshooting such as the jammed press button to release the bevel cut angle or the octogonal key in the back that doesn't tighten the chosen angle.

Thank you, very good video. You mention that you adjusted the laser. I did find the nut for moving the laser left and right, but is there a way of aligning it with with the 90 degree cut? The laser is not in line with the square line I mark on a board. Hope this makes sense. Many thanks again, Jon

Thank you for this great tutorial. I find that if i make cuts with waste on the right side of the blade they are usually square but if i put waste on the left side they are not. I'm not sure what to do in this situation since it's all one piece and they cannot be adjusted individually.

Thank you for a great video. My LS1017 cuts a right angle perfectly but when tilted 45 degrees (a bevel cut), the cut is 1.5mm to the left on the outside! So I need to adjust the guide by this just for the mitre joint. Painful. Maybe other's have an idea what might be wrong.

Hi, I just purchased the same saw and I'm having trouble unlocking the rear lever to cut bevels, the plastic handle just deforms and skips over the flats of the hexagon bar, has mine been over tightened at the factory or is there a lock somewhere that I am not aware of? regards

I am so crazy fine tuning the laser. It is not user friendly at all. I move the laser to the expected position, then every time I tight the screw, laser move to another position.

Just a note that if you, to use a random example, are cutting a too-small piece of oak and it gets violently jammed into the saw you must redo all of these adjustments 🙄

As a joiner with 47 years experience this is the worst saw I have ever purchased. Every angle miles out. I do not expect to buy a precision tool then have to reset every angle. Bits falling off all over. Dewalt is far better

I purchased a used one. The preowner tried to reset the mitres and failed. I do not have any problems with it. But I never owned a comparable Saw before (the previous one was 40 years old). This video was not made to quote the quality of the saw. It was made to help others how to reset.
