    OMG. Why are you making YET another fantastic piece of equipment. I am never going to make a profit at this rate. Still saving for the 450 SS square. If this hinge jig is half as good as anything else they make it will blow the competition out of the window. Think I need a lottery win.

    Troy Boy Almost every tool Dan owns has some modification on it. I have seen him improve Makita, Festool and now Trend. I don't think he could stop coming up with ideas if he tried. The problem, as always, is time. If you work hard for a living it is not easy to come home and work on another business.

    I’m keen to see it but will it replace my two strips of polished plywood that accept 3” + 4” hinges that pins onto the door and into the frame. Non adjustable but I use the same measurements and 3 hinges anyway! Cost £0.00

  • @SkillBuilder

    @SkillBuilder

    Hi Alan Every self-respecting tradesman can make a jig and, if it serves you well, there is no need to buy anything else. The problem now is that many doors are finished and putting pins into them is not acceptable. That is one of the drawbacks of some other jigs. Also being able to transfer the positions from door to lining or frame can speed the job up. When you have ten doors to hang in a house you need ways to make it easier.

  • @SkillBuilder

    @SkillBuilder

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Jack I am not sure I understand your point. If you have an existing lining the hinges are already housed. You still need to cut the ones for the doors but, to be honest, for a one off you are probably just going to cut them out. A hinge jig comes into its own when you are hanging several doors.

    I do not know... maybe it is UK thing. Maybe it is a local thing to me. But all the windows and doors that I have installed already come with the casing and pre-fitted hinges to match. So no need to do any of this. Interesting.

    In the U.K we are still hanging doors in the traditional way. Door sets are available and are used in some new build but we are stuck in our ways here. Also a lot of doors are replaced, largely due to fashion.

  • @SaintCoemgen

    @SaintCoemgen

    Жыл бұрын

    @@SkillBuilder Appreciate the traditional way. But had a couple of custom doors fitted in our house, and they were great... for about a year. Till they settled in to the humidity of the house and started to stick. I had to plane them off till they worked. And had to do that for about two years. Precision hinges may be great on day one, but they still need an adjustment mechanism. And if they have a good adjustment mechanism, they really do not need to be that precise in the fitting..... All modern doors I fit come with hinges that can be adjusted. Total and perfect precision on day one is not really that important. Because it is probably unrealistic. Being able to adjust is far, far more important. At least in in my humble opinion.... (IMHO). Hope this helps.

    As with most things if you take the easy route it will bite you. If you do this for a living and you care about your work you don’t trust accuracy to the Covid kids on the assembly line. I order all my doors unassembled and then I do the mortising and bore holes myself. Perfect is an acceptable tolerance for me. I’m less worried about making a ton of money and more about not getting call backs for shoddy work.

    @@pauldavies7251 There's no doubt that Robin is highly skilled but I don't think he ever gives a true reflection of doing a real life job, I fitted a Howdens door lining on Saturday and there was only 3mm clearance on the width of the door, so how do you fit the door without planing it!? He just routed some hinges out on his video, he didn't hang a door in my opinion, no leading edge, what if there's intumescent strip with smoke seal? How many times do you just get a door to drop in perfectly and just chop the hinges in? Very few in my experience, especially with the quality of the timber in the linings nowadays. I would love to see Robin hanging doors in old frames, where the heads out, the jambs are like bananas and there's a bulge in the floor, that's real carpentry not this perfect set up he always has.
