I always wonder why producers choose pbass more often than J. I belive it is because the "bass profile" from a P is less jumpy due to the offset neck pickup. Thats why I play a pj, cause you get the nice brightness from the bridge J, with the added bass stability from the P.

One of the primary reasons is that j basses typically have single coil pickups and p basses have split coil. This makes j basses have a bunch of hum between notes, whereas o basses are relatively silent. Other than that, if the pickups are in a similar location they can sound extremely similar. Oh, one is usually a few millimeters wider on the neck than the other as well, but I can't remember which at the moment.

I'm going to have to look up what you're talking about as I am clueless ... this is all new to me
Honk vs thump. PERFECT 💯

So glad you liked it! Cheers!
Having played both for years and in many types of venues I'd say the best sounding is The EBMM Stingray.
Great instruments with different tone fields.
Great straightforward comparison for starters! Although it would have been better IMO if the P’s tone was set to around 5-7 😊

yeah fair shout Paolo! I've been beasting a p-bass with flats and have been hooked on the deadest tone haha.
Slight issue comes from the fact that you can make a jazz bass sound like a pbass. But you can’t do it the other way around. If you have a PJ, even better.
You definitely messed with the tone controls lol
That p bass sound is a drug

The only perscription...is more p bass.
You can turn the tone knob one way or the other to get both of those sounds.
Only if you play the jazz bass on the bridge pickup......
Thanks for reminding me why any other bass has more character and life than a pbass.
What’s best for playing funk music?
put a treble booster and a fuzz on that thing

@@HickiesMusicStore Well yeah of course you saw my Mom. She was very happy to meet you and thought you were a friend and had no idea you were sucking me off. Also who is Ollie?
The tone on a jazz bass is quite versatile but a pbass can be too. Love em both. They say tone is mostly in the fingers

That p bass has a beautiful appearance and tone for only being 389GBP. I want it for that price. Is it really a squier?
Have a 1974 Jazz bass... Had a 1977 Precision bass.

How was the P-bass? Am quite the admirer of vintage basses! - Sam
Got it. Thanks
Is the tone rolled down on the P bass?
Let’s say 1 pickup basses have 3 sounds: tone off, tone 50% and tone 100%. That means the Jazz Bass has 9 sounds, but even 10+ minute comparisons still reduce it to HONK, they just call it ‘the Jaco sound’.

You're exactly right, might have to do a longer video on this topic. Great idea. :)
Grande Máximo Falcon 😍
Thank you
I’ve found that on a jazz bass if you turn the neck pickup to 90%, the bridge pickup to 0, and roll the tone off it sounds like a P bass.

That’s how you get the reggae sound ;)
EQ played a fair role in this to be honest...
You can get the best of both worlds: PJ with jazz neck
I have one bass so far, a PJ with a malfunctioning J pickup. This video was instrumental in convincing me to get that J fixed.
I love the p bass sound.

Thanks so much Natasha! Really glad you enjoyed the sound of it! :) Stay awesome - Sam
what should i get a hambucker or a jazz bass to get the sound like joe dart
Do you start off using middle finger or 1st finger ? What is best? (Without a pick)

I had to mime this out in public to think about it. And if i'm honest I don't think there's a single right answer, other than it depends on what's coming next. For example, if you're going to rake down the strings, start with your index finger. :) Cheers, Ollie
You can make either of those sound those ways
Like it dude

I got a p bass with jazz neck. Its a beauty
both are great, but have a jazz 5 rn
So funny…this is all the explanation you need
I like P bass and change the treble on the amp, but Jazz Bass is awesome too! But i prefer the simplicity. Minimalism hahaha
What are the tone settings on the jazz bass?
What is the P Bass in the video called?
I have a Squier 5 string that says Precision on the headstock, but has jazz pickups. What's the deal with this? Anybody know? I got it new from a shop, so it's not like someone swapped the neck.
What are the settings on the amp and the jazz bass? I want that sound

Thanks for this, I would have asked Ollie, but he is no longer with the shop anymore, and off to the fire and rescue service! Cheers - Sam
The solo bridge pup is NOT why I bought a jazz. The reason I have one is both pickups.
I learned today that Jazz bass sounds "honk!"
I have a J and a P. They’re both right for that specific sound and gig. I prefer the mid thump of the P. You can always EQ out a bit of the mid in a My influence is James Jamerson, soul and blues.
What's the difference between a PJ bass?

Both pickup styles in the same instrument! A good choice for versatility!
Maybe if you didn't turn the treble all the way down on the P-Bass it would honk vs thump?

I'm going to have to revisit this aren't I? Cheers, Ollie
What about the Fender Precision Jazz?
The jazz goes thwonk and the precision goes bwomp
You can thump with a j bass but you can’t honk with a p bass.
tbh, really informative
OK but you have zero treble in your P bass, making the comparison not so great
How do u get it to sound like that
I love all of them

So glad you enjoyed the bass guitars man, have a good one where you are! - Sam
I m drawn to PBass tones, probably because I Like James Jamerson
Get a PJ bass. So a P-bass with a Jazz rear single coil. Now use both pickups, and dial the front P-pickup back just a slight amount. You’ll hear it.

I need a P bass!
you can make either sound like either
Tone is really dialled back on the precision. It's a lot more versatile than you hearing here.

Hi David! Heres a squier precision doing its best to be dynamic for you kzread.info/dash/bejne/amdrvNh6otvAZLA.html
Played in different locations relative to the bridge, so hard to say. Of course it will sound brighter nearer to the bridge.
@VIDS2013

The Jazz Bass is brighter because he has the tone rolled way off in the P-Bass segment.
I like the sound of both, but every time I see a bass, I always want to try and match the tone/sound of Peter Steele (lead singer and bassist of the band Type O Negative)
Tbh the difference sounds more like an EQ thing if anything.
Listening to that P bass I don't know why people crap on Squire it sounded great
That's why my favorite pickup combo on bass is P/J, and with a blend knob. You get both options.
What song are you playing?
Now I gotta pick up my bass to see what it is

The precision sounds like its tone knob is way down. The jazz sounds like it's neck pickup is off. I still totally appreciate this video, just saying there's more to the story.
Most scientific video I found on this topic
Love that P Bass !
I just got my first jazz bass (I used to borrow what I assume is a p.bass from my school) and I’ve also noticed it’s a whole lot heavier. Maybe that’s just me-

Interesting! probably depends on the body's wood. :) is it alder, or ash?
@WilDBeestMF

It's not an illusion. Jazz basses tend to have a broader, albeit sleeker and more contoured body which belies that they're a bit heavier.
