Precision Amens for Modern Jungle with Ableton Sampler

Музыка

This is my preferred method for creating laser cut precision Amens with the Ableton Sampler. There are many ways to create those ultra-tight staccato chops you hear in the likes of Sully's jungle, and even Squarepusher. Sampler is my weapon of choice for getting that modern jungle sound in Ableton, but you can achieve a similar effect with the Drum Rack device.
I also show you how you can use Follow Actions to generate more patterns quickly and some other cools things that you can do only in Sampler.

    In Ableton I always find it a dilemma as I want to use simpler but it’s doesn’t have ping pong looping with warp off and sampler does but sampler doesn’t have warp. Doh!

    Thanks for starting to go over Sampler. For me, it is less understood but far more powerful than Simpler (which was of course designed to be simple). I love the Sustain Mode and the ability to set it to loop backwards when it reaches the end of a sample and set loop points for that.

    Ive never tried to chop up breaks this way, damn! Only used it in conjunction with drum rack or via playback with an arpeggiator. This seems like a really nice approach. I dont know why but Sampler feels so daunting sometimes. Thanks for the detailed and concise tutorial !

    Cheers Jon! Yeah it took me a while too, think as you say it's because Sampler is perhaps a bit... utilitarian and not as 'inviting' as other devices. Also, the thought of lining up every slice is a bit intimidating. But, once that's done you can save it for future use. I'll very often pull in the same preset tens of times in tunes, just to kick things off before maybe I try a different approach if I want to finish the track. Thanks for the comment, and glad it was useful :))

    Oh, wow 😳 - I’ve never seen someone’s slice direct to the Sampler, it’s always been to the Drum Racks. Given that slicing to Sampler adds the functionality of being able to loop the tails of slices, why would anyone slice to Drum Rack? What are the Pros and Cons of either approach?

  • @HumanSynthetics

    Thanks so much! So many ways to skin that breakbeat cat haha. I think I cover just this question in old stream dedicated to all the ways you can chop breaks in Ableton (if you permit me to share an old vid): kzread.infoUAPkJFVc-3o One feature Drum Rack slicing gives you access to is Warp Modes in Simpler. The only way you could do similar in Sampler would be by loading it with a pre-warped break that's been chopped slice by slice. Over time, I've noticed I use a mix of everything. Sometimes I chop on the timeline, sometimes in Sampler, sometimes in Drum Rack, sometimes just in Simpler in Slice mode. They all have slightly different benefits, usually it's what's quickest in the creative moment. I'm a bit of a completionist and like to know every conceivable way to do anything in Ableton haha, just because in the creative moment, I need things to work fast and true so I can get ideas down quickly. Hope that helps, and thanks again.

    Why did you use 2 voices instead of 1 voice?

  • @HumanSynthetics

    @HumanSynthetics

    Great question! If I have say a time stretched cymbal going and want to program a little 16th note snare roll, 2 voices lets me do that. Essentially making it duophonic. 1 would just let the cymbal play and block the snare roll.

    Hey pizey, definitely nothing under the 'Defaults' folder? You're on 11? I'm not sure if you can delete it by accident, which is the only thing I could think might have happened. You could create a 'Slicing' folder in 'Defaults' and see if it shows up when you're ready to 'Slice To MIDI'. Let me know how you get on.
