Building in concrete is a very serious science, even just wrong water doses you get to reduce the strength of the cement even by 30% or more, if you make other mistakes you easily get to the disasters.

Finally, somebody who understands the science. Thank you. Yes, I had the privilege of a very good engineering education at an Ivy League school, but it still boggles the mind to see so much done wrong in the field, not just in 3rd world countries, but in the US too. I should write a video book. I was the lead field engineer writing engineering letters for all the screw ups for an engineering company that signed/sealed 20,000 plans a year. I have seen it all. The worst was when we caught a cement block layer who decided he could save money by filling the filled cells with sand instead of concrete. He did that to 300 houses! We only discovered it when a drywall boom truck backed into the corner of a garage. The entire house fell down.

I have no engineering degree, but what I do have is 35 years in the construction business ranging from installing parking lots to buildings and I have seen so many screwed up designs, but the one that stands out to me the most has to be the parking lot with no entrance that they literally forced me to install! Guess the architect was smoking some good shit that day. But I do understand where you are coming from. I also came across a building that the block cells were filled with sand and some had nothing in them at all in the corners and of course they hired my company to fix this problem because the builder had filed bankruptcy the previous year. Some of the problems are a company gets so desperate to just to make payroll that they under bid jobs and find ways to cut corners.

My guess is that the first pour is a pure cement and water mix for a hard bottom face, then a stiffer mix, then wire in between..It`s a decorative concrete panel, not a suspended bridge or column. If you think you can show them how to make that panel much stronger ,more efficiently, make a video of you doing so and link to it here.. Bet you cant Mr Engineer.

Concrete is mixed and poured correctly all over the planet, why do you think it is difficult? You cannot use pure Portland Cement, it will crack like a meth addict's teeth. Standard mix for 3000 psi concrete is 1 part OPC, 3 parts sand, three parts aggregate. When the cement is not at least 1-1/2" thick, then it needs at least 6,000 psi mix, which is simple, just double the OPC. The amount of water depends upon a lot of things, impossible to predict that until mixed because the sand or aggregate might contain some. So the only valid test is the slump test. Any supplier will have the cone, looks like a regular funnel. Fill the cone with the mix, dump it upside down on a flat surface. A 2" slump is perfect for most applications. What is so hard about that? The bag of OPC has these instructions on the back. What, you think it is rocket science? So tell me if what I described came anywhere close to what was done in this video. That was a ten inch slump for the first mix, which means it is worthless. The OPC separates from the aggregate and sand, no adhesion.

You talk too much!! Why is it so difficult to post a video to show us how its done in reality big boy?? Talk is cheap and by the time you produce anything of actual worth, those guys will have made another 100 meters of concrete fencing product!! Stop being a key board Google "engineer" warrior and post the damned video. Then I might show you more respect.

Great job, But Please protect your feet ! When cement is dry it contains calcium oxide, which is not particularly dangerous. However, when water is added to cement, calcium hydroxide is formed, which is extremely alkaline with a pH of 12 to 13. Normal human skin has a pH of 5.5; therefore, wet cement can produce alkaline (caustic) skin burns which progress and get worse without more exposure. A worker may have wet concrete on his or her skin for hours without feeling any discomfort; however, the cement is damaging the skin microscopically. Early identification of changes to the skin is important so steps can be taken to treat the affected area. Don’t assume the burn will not get worse. By the time a worker becomes aware of a burn, much damage has already occurred and further damage is difficult to stop.

I like how he starts with a slurry coat then a layer of stiffer mix. The dry sand to pull out excess moisture at the end is also interesting, he also salvages the sand/cement slurry, I wonder if that is used in the next mix? Thanks for the video!

yes the consistency makes it really suspect. But the real sad part is the fact that they sell them for substantial prices and are probably paying the guy cents per hour. Of course the real problem is our unwillingness as consumers to make sure we are buying product from fair and reasonable manufacturers and not only for the lowest price.

If that were me the first thing I would do is put that mold at waist height so I wouldn't have to work bent over all day. The weight of his own head in foot-pounds puts tremendous pressure on the discs at the base of the spine. However since he's working with one hand with his elbow on his leg helps a lot. Still, raise it up.

  • @1Howdy1

You could use these as privacy panels for a patio. Use as a texture and shadow detail in front of a wall, either attached to it, or offset in front of. Use as a landscaping backdrop. Lay flat as a border for a sidewalk or patio, planting ground cover within the lattice. The benefit of a panel like this is they allow light and air to pass through with lots of texture. When you build a structure like a house, or any building really, there's somewhat of a 90 degree angle between the ground and the panel of the wall. This box look might be what we want, but many times we use the wall panel as a canvas. Landscaping can be used as a medium - using basic art rules, like the rule of thirds, to create an aesthetic feature out of the wall. An example is to plant shrubs that will grow to 1/3 wall height near the wall and progressively smaller plants radiating out, so the landscaping appears to ramp up to the wall - creating a natural curve out of an artificial flat straight surface. Picture your average residential landscaping theme, with plants at the corners to break up the line. Now, imagine the landscaping in front of the house, but we were able to somehow remove the house without touching the landscape. The plants would look odd, they work with the wall to balance, like a picture frame improves the picture. When you have a full garden it can be so busy and full people get lost and miss things, they can't see the trees through the forest. Details like light colored concrete and red brick really work well to break up the green, add contrast, grab the eye, inject detail.

This is just wrong from a lot of respects, first is how much water is in the mix, none of that concrete is consistent in terms of strength, all of it a hodge podge of bad. It would fail with the slightest jarring, I wouldn't buy anything from those guys. If you want to understand real precast products, look at how they make block.

I"ve watched a lot of builders here in Korea use bricks to fill in the concrete structure of buildings. they actually put DRY mortar mix on the bricks, and add water and mix it together as they assemble the wall. Then they add layers of stuccco to make the walls complete. No hod carrying, no level string, just fill in the space with bricks. A bit sloppy, but it works. It's also easier to tear down with an excavator is 15 years when you want to put a different building there.

Robert Carver You are right. I wanted to write the same things before reading your comment, he put too much water and then it vibrates too much so that the materials are separated according to their grain size and they lose the cohesion
