To each his own... we are not called to do the same. We are called to follow the conviction of the HS to us. Not everyone can do spontaneously in the pulpit. So do whatever works best for you guys. As long as you send the message loud and clear across, that would be fine with us😊😍 we appreciate the hard working pastors that God’s uses for His kingdom.

Preachers need to seek God! Call out to Jesus and ask for the HolySpirit to come and give them the words to say! The preachers need to let the HolySpirit have His way. Jesus knows our every need, He knows what battles we are enduring. He knows how to Chasen us and correct us. We all need to ready our ears to hear from the master. We need JESUS.

Charles Spurgeon would preach extemporaneously (without notes) at his Monday prayer meeting. He said it helped him stay sharp in his regular Sunday preaching where he would preach with a minimal outline. The chapter titled "The Faculty of Impromptu Speech" in his book "Lectures to My Students" addresses this issue in depth. For anyone wanting to learn the nuts-and-bolts of preaching without notes, I recommend it to you.

Don't confuse "without notes" with "unprepared/winging it" (and calling it Spirit led). Some of the dumbest things ever said in a pulpit (and attributed to the Spirit) were said by lazy, unprepared, and un-studied...dare I use the term...preachers.

A professor of mine in a preaching class back in school once said, "You CAN get up and just wing it, expecting the Holy Spirit to catch you. However, it's a shame to give Him so little to work with." I've learned the hard way that God does not coddle the lazy and unprepared. It's like we expect Him to honor the sluggard. However, I think we've all had the times where we just did not have the time to prepare properly... in those times I've felt more enabled then almost any other time. Interesting how God knows the effort we actually applied, and meets us there.

Know your subject and memorize the main points of your outline. And like he said, in some settings it works better than other settings. I need full notes for a Bible class, but can do fine without notes during a sermon or a short devotional video. Whatever works, just remember is not about you is about preaching the Word.

In 2020 (during the height of COVID) God opened an unexpected door for my wife and I to minister on an US Army installation to soldiers in basic training. I found myself using less and less notes and relying more on just a handful of keywords within scripture. I’ve discovered that the notes can lend it self to more of an academic teaching, while the extemporaneous preaching without notes seems to make a greater impact for Christ. Regardless we are planting seeds of the gospel and seeing a massive monthly harvest of souls! Glory to the King of King’s!!!

I generally manuscript, but I’ve begun to highlight certain words, or ideas, (preaching from my iPad) that allow considerably more freedom and interaction with the congregation without losing my place in the notes. Occasionally, I’m in a position to have no opportunity to put notes together ahead of time, and because I’ve become accustomed to only being guided by the highlighted portions in my notes, The Lord has given grace, allowing me to operate with just a few topic sentences, words or ideas. I don’t know if my goal ever be to exclusively preach with no notes, but it has become a very useful skill over the last years.

Good message pastor. I have been preaching without notes for 31 years. I have many notes in my wide margin Bible, which I use on occasion for memory sake; but I am constantly in the scriptures and living the text on a daily basis. Jesus said that what comes out of our mouth is in our heart. Which is why I always teach my people..."stay in the word, and the word will come out of you." Having a few references on a note pad often helps, but as Pastors, we should be in the word enough to have a natural flow when preaching. As an expostory preacher, I prefer to let the word speak first, the go back over the text, exegeting and expounding upon the same. Chapter by chapter and book by book. The Holy Spirit will speak thru us, when we surrender to him. Thank you for these podcasts. May the Lord continue to guide you, in Jesus name.

Yes, that can easily happen. I generally had a outline to stay on track with. I didn't want to be in bondage to a set of notes, but I didn't want to get off topic either. A outline keeps one on track but allows the sermon to be spirit led. The pastor should know their sermon so well that they can talk their way through it.

I've not really preached in front of a lot of people. I am a part of our nursing home ministry team, have done a good amount of evangelism, and also a few group leading. The first time I was asked to give 10 minutes at a nursing home, I tried to use notes and after I fumbled around for a bit trying to keep track of time, and the key verses, I began to get some anxiety. So, I just stopped mid way and let His word just flow from me. There were some questions asked during (which some today may feel is interruption) and they were welcomed to me personally. Before I knew it, I had actually gone on for over 30 minutes and got to share some of my experience and understanding, and also eye contact was a big portion of this as well. Being able to see some eyes glow, if you will... Since that day, I have never prepared a teaching and it does feel as if I am guided or lead as I say something and another portion of Scripture comes to mind that I can elaborate and correlate from times I have studied previously or even recently. The give and take is what I truly enjoy the most because I feel that as they are asking, they are engaged and listening, and can sometimes keep me on my toes in challenging ways to be true to what the Scriptures say, and try to use some of the parables or events that transpired to get at the root of the questions asked. I do feel blessed when I preach sometimes and feel the Spirit, and that always puts a smile on my face. Having said that, I have also had some sermons where a person seemed to suck the air out of the room by opening it up to conversation. I've also had some times where I myself didn't seem to be in the right mindset... This is quite a long post so, I will try to sum it up that no notes for me seems to be how God has gifted me, and I also like to think of Peter preaching to the Gentiles as the Spirit was poured out to them. I do not think Peter prepared a week for what ever the Spirit was feeding him. I hope this was helpful to anyone perhaps nervous and to place all trust in God. Blessings to you.

I have been asked to preach spur of the moment with no "prep time" for notes. I never mastered the art of outline so when I do notes sometimes it is just a few ideas written on paper or a Scripture or so but usually have a sermon written out where I could just read it out. I just usually don't stick fully to the notes sometimes I look at them and sometimes I don't. I have been known to set at my desk in prayer and study and writing note all hours of the night then get to the pulpit and preach something entirely different just depends on what I feel God is lead in me to in the moment.

Paul and Jesus preached without notes but I'm so grateful that most of it was written down for us to read for ourselves today... the sermon on the mount and Paul's letters for example. Wish I could preach without notes too but I write out my message because its not recorded all the time. I'd like to keep records of the message... to remember as a pastor over the years what was covered...it helps to preach the whole counsel of God. I would hate to do verse by verse preaching on Romans for example and then find at the end I would have to depend on somebody else's take on what I said. I think notes has its advantages too. Its a big topic and I think both sides can put up strong arguments for what they prefer.

For most of 20 years I wrote two newspaper columns a week. I read and re-read and edited and rewrote to the point where I had every column memorized. It was good practice for manuscripting and internalizing and memorizing sermons so that I use few if any notes. In my experience, there is a marked difference in how your listeners engage with the sermon if you're making almost constant eye contact, and speaking your points naturally instead of reading them. Just my two cents. As Dr Lawson says, do what works for you.

Preaching without notes is not you rambling. The key is your study and preparation. It takes time. You get familiar with the text and outline. The easiest way to teach or preach without notes is to select a topic that you have extensive experience or education in. For example, if you teach on a topic that you use to witness, you will have practice and passion. I can speak for hours on getting good grades (John 14:26, Psalms 119:99-100, I John 2:27, James 1:5), evangelism technique, overcoming temptation, how to intercede for others, because these are topics that I have extensive practice in. If I select some topic that is new, it might be flat. I avoid flat sermons, so 99% of the time, I teach a sermon that I taught before. Also If I preach, I teach 3 topics about 10 minutes each with a fiery ending. You need a fiery ending if you are going to do an alter call. I do not prepare too much the first topic or introduction, but rather warm up my voice the first 10 minutes teaching. People remember how you finish, not how you start. I know that this is contrary to what is taught, but you cannot preach 20 minutes, blow out your voice and finish weak, they will never invite you back. And I hear people say about these beginners, "He doesn't know how to preach!"

Preach it with all your heart, like you will never have the same chance again to preach the gospel. 5. Dedicate your every life's aspect for the Glory of GOD. 6. Enjoy the freedom!

Gamer I pastored twenty years and learned to develop full manuscripts that provided for strong verbal clarity and precise wording/phrasing that I would not want to drop, however I did internalize the content so well that I would rarely look at the written material for more than a glance. it goes both ways. Dr. Lawson did say do what works for you- I found a manuscript worked for me but I did need to absolutely own it to remain "lively."If you respond i can send you audio and text as an example. Not arguing with Dr. Lawson just not overlooking what he said about "best for you." Not all of us are gifted for extemporaneous speech.

@@dmmusicmusic well said. My text Sunday night was The Foolishness Of Preaching, from Paul in 1 Corinthians. Some are “teaching” preachers Some are hell fire and brimstone preachers Some are quiet and disciplined to stay on point Some seem to channel the Holy Spirit, and get across in five minutes what another may take thirty. But God called each one to preach based on their manner and personality. A lost soul may hear preacher A a dozen times, with wonderful sermons, and hear preacher B one time and get under conviction unto salvation. Paul put it this way; I planted, Apollos watered, God brought forth the increase. We all have our part to play. Don’t try to imitate someone else. God called each one for a specific reason, and we are all uniquely qualified by Him to do His work.

Preaching without noted means that you must have healthy command of the text itself as far as the interpretation and be able to organize it in the necessary srrmonic form. It also means that you should have in memory the links between the point of the passage and the possible supporting passages found elsewhere. You would need to also have good command of the means of communicating the flow of the genre of the text. Going Verse by verse is not always helpful especially in old testament preaching.

Preaching Without Notes allows you to depend upon the moving of the Holy Spirit, and thus allowing the Spirit to move more freely, because you are not bound to keep to your notes. And as far as I know, George Whitfield also preached without notes.

If the Lord will allow and with the Holy Spirits help, I'd prefer preaching without notes or at the very most, just a few key words written in the margin of my bible.

If you have ears to hear here is the Gospel: 1 Corinthians 15 1-4 : Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures and we have to put our trust in his blood Romans 3 24-26 : 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. And You are saved through faith in his blood alone it is a free GIFT of God and not through your works lest any man should boast! So remember that faith means you believe and trust it and the moment you trust the blood Gospel you are saved and if you want to tell that too God it should come from the Heart! God bless you

I’m a new Christian and the oddest thing I ever encountered is a pre scripted sermon. Notes are not a problem to me, when I see a pastor using them but, he had better be using Gods Word as his reference. (Of course, rite). I attend a satellite church owned by another church and, though they are two different pastors, the sermons are identical. The sermons are pre scripted and are also handed out to the congregation? It’s very strange for me, to participate in this. I can’t help but to wonder, where is the Holy Spirit in this? Just my experience.

Watch out for those who take part in the illegal transfer. Hosea prophesied in Hosea 4, 1. He speaks here of their contempt of the second table of the law; for by this the impiety of men is sooner found out, that is, when an examination is made of their life: for hypocrites vauntingly profess the name of God, and confidently (plenis buccis - with full cheeks) arrogate faith to themselves; and then they cover their vices with the external show of divine worship, and frigid acts of devotion. Arrogatio. Be honest with thyself. Did you choose to decide for Christ and choose Jesus, confessing and repenting, inviting him into your heart by faith? Of course you did. That's how people are taught and think that they read it literally and thats literally what it says. Wrong.

I also with the word preacher; that word has a bad feeling on my ears. Preacher to me sounds like a nag. Something like a wife or husband might do. ! Like when are you cut or now that lawn or fix that drain in the kitchen! Etc! When are going get dinner ready!? I think teacher is much better! WHY,? Because isn't that what Jesus told his disciples go out and teach my word! I think also the only true way to know the word of GOD IS BY TEACHING BOOK BY BOOK CHAPTER BY CHAPTER VERSE BY VERSE! THAT WAY THE PASTOR LEARN AND SO DOES HIS MEMBERS OR SHEEP AND LAMBS. THAT ARE JUST BEGINNING THEIR LIFE IN THE WONDERFUL WORD OF GOD AND THAT THEY HAVE SALVATION THROUGH JESUS CHRIST! BE ALSO LIKE BROTHER PAUL TAUGHT ON THREE LEVELS BABIES WHO STILL NEED MILK ( THE BEGINNERS). NEXT LEVEL KNOWING THE WORD PARTLY BUT. STILL ARE HUNGRY FOR MORE. LAST ONES WHO THINK THEY KNOW IT ALL BUT ARE STILL CURIOUS ABOUT LEARNING MORE! BECAUSE NOBODY KNOWS EVERYTHING. EACH TIME YOU TEACH A BOOK OF THE BIBLE OR ANYONE ELSE THE WORD. SHOULD. FIND SOMETHING NEW SOMETHING THAT YOU AND OTHER'S MISSED THE LSST TIME THAT BOOK WAS TAUGHT! THE WORD OF GOD IS PREGNANT IT GROWS EVERYTIME YOU READ OR HEAR OR TEACH THE WORD MAYBE EVEN AFTER YOUR SERVICE IS DONE FOR THAT DAY. OPEN YOURSELF UP TO. A Q&A SESSION PEOPLE ARE NOW ARE HUNGRY. FOR THE TRUTH AND THE WORD WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT THE WORD MEMBERS ASK MOST LIKELY. NINE OUT OF TEN WANT TO KNOW ANSWER TO THE SAME QUESTION LOOK IT UP TOGETHER BOTH OF YOU WILL KNOW! THAT WAY YOU AND OTHERS WILL SHOW YOURSELF APPROVED BY GOD BY STUDYING THE WORD. !
