"You have to wonder if he didn't strike the same deal as delta shaman Robert Johnson.."
The Oregonian, Portland Oregon
"new blues artist we now can't live without....Jody Carroll, whose textured blues and other roots were dark and haunting.."
No Depression, Amos Perrine
Jody Carroll is a new breed of Blues man. His sound is a ground breaking mix of old America Roots/Blues and beyond creating an intense soundscape armed only with a guitar/Banjo and voice. Imagine if you mixed Robert Johnson's dark personal honesty with the modern flamboyant fire of Hendrix.....you get Jody Carroll

"..Modern music that is at the same time well soaked in old weird American traditional music. Daring, original, deep, sweet, dark, exciting are some of the adjectives that come to ones mind when listening to him. You are greeted with a whirlwind of sounds that he creates with his guitar and voice. Deep as the wood’s and California delta region where he comes from, dark as the San Joaquin river water he grew up swimming in and uplifting as the traditional American melodies and stories he was raised with.."
L.A Times
"His fingerpicking and slide skills amaze and challenge listeners while his moving vocals draw them into the world of a true story teller.."
Cascade Blues Association

Now THAT is how you sing and play the F#@K!N' Blues !!! They say that a true blues guitarist can make you envision a train just by playin', and you did just that. It started out at the station, built up speed, and then took off blazin' down them tracks !!! VERY cool, Jody... RJ couldn't have done that better... loved it, Brother !!!

This sounds really right---as do all of your corrected songs. There are some variables here--There is no guarantee or evidence that Robert Johnson tuned his guitar to concert pitch. That would meant having a pitch reference like a pitch pipe or some other kind of tuning reference available in the 1930's. I doubt he ever really tuned his guitar to concert pitch. Also, consider the environment in the Hotel Rooms in Texas. Was the equipment used for recording actually getting 110 volts? if under 100 volts, then the equipment would be operating at a slower speed, and when played again somewhere else, say in New York at 110 volts, that machine would run faster, therefore speeding up the playback. I think this may have as much to do as anything with the pitch and speed of these recordings. And since we do not know whether Robert Johnson actually tunes his guitar to concert pitch, it's going to be very difficult to determine what the correct pitch is. I agree for sure, a lot of the Columbia recordings sound too fast, the vibrato in his voice is too fast, and you've got a good ear for what sounds natural. If what I propose makes any sense, then the difference between the voltage in BOTH Texas Hotel rooms used for recording are bound to vary between themselves as well.

As did the room that night at the Gaillard Center Charleston, SC in April! Love your analysis. If I am not with another player, or using a harmonica, I usually have tuned it lower than concert based on how my voice feels. This one is in Gm tuning capo'd up to Cm. That guitar is a 39, so it has a mind of it's own.
