Just so you know this song is about the play "The Crucible", everything in the lyrics is based on said play, it is not an attack on religion, political view or anything of that kind. The crucible is a play about the Salem Witch Trials, but it HEAVILY dramatizes a lot of the things that happened for the sake of bringing a message across, this song also uses a similar technique in the lyrics.

Definitely partly an attack on Christianity. That's a pretty obvious standpoint held by MIW. All the 4th songs in the album, except in Reincarnate (no.5, Everybody Sells Cocaine), bash on religion or God in one way or another, along with more random songs and a few MVs. The rest of your statement is correct.

This song was not an attack on religion. Its completely based on The Crucible. In the play, John is accused of being the Anti-Christ and set to hang. When he is accused he is to before the town and confess his sins. Of course, John is innocent and therefore he tells that God is dead. Probably the most powerful scene in the play. And that is where they got the soundbite from in the final breakdown of the song. And this isnt a guess or anything I was friends with Chris over Myspace back when MIW were lesser known and we used to discuss the meanings of a few songs.

Other people have commented the background of the song so I dont need to repeat again but... the voice you hear saying "it's not on a ship well meet again Abigail, but in hell" is a a direct quote and I could be wrong but that line in the song is audio from the movie. The guy isnt a priest, he's John Proctor, he was a respected member of the comunity and had an affair and Abigail when she was still really young, accused her wife of being a witch to keep her husband to herself. That's what the vid is about. I read the play cuz I wanted to understand the lyrics but also had to buy a book explaining theplay cuz it was in old english, it was kinda like Shakespearean in language.

A lot of the lyrics are straight from the book, such as "it's not on a ship we'll meet again Abigail, but in Hell" and "I say God is dead!" - you should definitely read The Crucible and then listen to the song again. You could also watch the 1996 adaptation of the play which stars Daniel Day-Lewis as John Proctor and Winona Ryder as Abigail. Abigail Williams accused many people of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials. She alone was responsible for the deaths of several people by hanging. She was literally a psychopath, and she was only a child at age 11. In the book, her age is raised to 17. The pastor in the video is John Proctor, with whom she had an affair (yes that's weird as hell but not historically accurate). And the trials were real, and so was Abigail. Even though the video has a shock factor to it, all this shit actually happened back in 1692-1693.
