Imagine how well it would work with sharp cutters.

Those cutters look like manganese castings which are "work hardened", but they won't will not maintain a sharp edge.

I am very familiar with shredder principles which I have learned from technical papers written by the mechanical engineers at Newell Industries Inc. who was one of the pioneers of the car shredder in the 1950s. Sharpened cutters must be made from "tool steel" which is hardened and ground to a knife edge. However this metal is brittle and it can be damaged by severe impact (the change in pressure divided by time). Even when running at low speeds, shredding thick steel items like cars can approach the impact limit of tool steel and the sharp edges would be chipped and broken off. The entire cutter wheel could be subject to fracture. However manganese steel is not pre-hardened and remains rather plastic except for the surfaces that come in contact with the material being shredded and this pressure produces localized hardening commonly known as "work hardening". As the hardened surface wears away, new metal is exposed and the work hardening process repeats. manganese steel shredders can tolerate a lot of wear before needing replacement. That's why you will notice that the cutter wheels in the shredder in this video are worn down but still useable. Also, cars that have gone through the "pre-shredder" still must be finally processed by a high speed hammermill which is all manganese steel.

They should have another shredder under this one to make the big chunks into small chunks.

Think of the amount of energy it takes through the entire process of recycling a car back into just molten steel ready to pour. its way more than just digging up raw ore and processing it did in the first place.

I can see the flaws with this type of shredder- you see how steel cable gets wrapped on the teeth? The double roller shredders are self cleaning. Also- the steel used on this one has worn badly. Rounded it. The best is the one youtube that eats it ALL - engine blocks included.

You know, i saw that. The cables/ wires, wrapped around it. So i thought to myself and said; Self, how do they get those cables/ wires off of those big ass rollers? And myself said; hmmmm? Dont really know? But i'll be damned if i would go in there with a torch and burn em or grind em off! And myself said back to me; damn right! Dont want that shit poppin off wrapping around my arm or flyin into my face! And myself said back; {HELLZ YEAH!} BAG DAT...

@@robwilsn3219 lol. Yep..makes you wonder how much less metal is processed because of inferior machines. Time is money!

You are not a shredder expert. But there are some issues with all shredders. But the panning ripsteel design is well recognized as the design to do this task. And hold up well..but when you become a shredder expert your comments can be considered..

How would anyone literally feel if I were to get into a mini-van or panel van, put my cloth and disposable diapers in there with me while I was wearing nothing but disposable diapers? Would I be allowed to be crushed and then pre-shredded in the crushed mini van? I am asking due to "death with dignity" and if I actually can to that yard could I get into a vehicle?
