    +FashionBabe45 Andrea! I've made good grades in high school, however don't have the money for a 4year school. I'm planning on going to Community College for 1 year and transfer into a 4year. The 1 year is to finish basics (I would plan on taking my science classes at the uni) and solidify my concept of responsibility. Also, I wanted to volunteer at a hospital and work on my phlebotomy certification (I will have to work while in school) so I could apply my skills to the medical field. I know you haven't experienced community college, but any opinion would help. Thanks in advance!

    I would also add that aside from checking your grades to see if you are academically on track for medical school, shadowing is one of the BEST ways to figure out what future career is best for you. By shadowing docs, PAs, and other health professionals in a variety of specialties you will get the best sense as to which jobs you most feel that you would enjoy. I will be starting med school this August and this is the one thing I wish I had focused more energy on in undergrad!

  • @attepted-felicity1222

    @attepted-felicity1222

    8 жыл бұрын

    Hey Jackiee! So for me the best way to go about shadowing doctors was to contact the pre-health advisor at my university. She was able to give me the contact information for alumni in specialties that I was interested in. I then emailed those people and all of them really made an effort to try to work with me, though some ended up being too busy. Some good times for me were during summer breaks in college, and some weekends. If you are in college or have graduated, you should definitely see if you have a pre-health or career advisor who can give you some contacts. If you're in high school or do not have an advisor, I would say just to call doctors offices and say that you were calling with hopes to speak to the doc about possible shadowing. More people will probably say no this way, but if you keep trying you'll probably get in somewhere. It might be good to know that many doctors do not take high school students and some don't even take college students, so don't get too discouraged if they say no. During college or as part of a gap year may be the best plan for timing. But the earlier you do it, the more it can help you to have more ideas about what you want to do.

I am going to go into college for sure and I will most definitely try to get into med school, but I would like to know how Im supposed to accomplish this goal and then there's tuition to think about. Well if you've read this far, then I give you my thanks.

    +ThyBallisticLui “Slayer” 57 You need to follow her advice and go one step at a time. Do well in high school first--especially in science classes and math. Start volunteering in hospitals, hospices, and other patient-related environments. Regarding paying for college, if you can do well on the PSAT/NMSQT you can eventually become a National Merit Finalist earning an almost full ride at colleges such as University of Oklahoma, University of Alabama, or University of Central Florida. That way you will not be overloaded with debt when you do get accepted to Med School.

    Salmaan Hello! Yes I am an junior in college now. I graduated a year early from high school in 2017. I attended college for about 2 years getting my prerequisites. I decided that I would not go into the field of physician. Instead I decided to go for RN. I did take a year off from college on my junior year in 2019. But i just started going back again this year, this is my junior year now, I am currently taking my CNA125 class and a Calculas class that I needed as a prerequisite and by the end of this year I should have my CNA License. And then next semester I will transfer to a university to take my RN classes. And I haven’t thought about anything after that. I am super busy working and taking these two classes. I have the highest grade in my CNA class so far. But I am super stressed to be honest. I’m just trying to keep pushing. I hate college so much lol but I know it necessary and I’m so close to finishing. But thanks for asking for the update. I had totally forgotten about all my goals I had lol.

    Hi Andrea! Thanks for another great video. I'm currently in Dental Hygiene school and I am still torn between going further into Dentistry to do the DDS program or switch to med. There are numerous occasions in which I just say "I wish I was doing med" but idk what exactly my reason is. I don't have a compelling passion for it now but I believe once I start I will get to appreciate how much of a rewarding career it is. But honestly what if it's not for me? Med school is very expensive and if by some miracle I were to find the money for med school and not be good at it, then that would be disastrous. Sigh. I really need some advice. I am in great distress here. Andrea + anyone else who can advise me here, please do. Thanks. (Btw Andrea I've emailed you mths ago and no response :( )

    Hi Andrea, I was wondering what should you do if you didn't do well your first semester. I know you mentioned not getting the 4.0 GPA, but what if your first semester led you to be on academic probation for the second? I tried to calculate my GPA for the rest of the time I would be in college and I don't think I can ever get a 4.0 GPA, however, I decided that I will continue to work hard and my very best to see where it leads me. If I don't get into medical school immediately after undergrad, I might take some time off and research and also raise my GPA. It'll be better when I apply again for medical school in the future I think.

    Dear Doctor, I am a medical imaging undergrad and Spanish minor. I'm in my sophomore year and have yet to take my first Spanish class (I will be next semester however). Once I start my clinical program for x-ray which is the concentration I'm thinking to choose, I will have to give up summer 2016 and 2017 in order to take the required classes. In addition to these classes I still need to finish my minor and take other classes required to apply to med school. When looking at the schedule for x-ray it virtually does not allow me enough time to complete all of this in 4 years. Would med schools care if I spent a 5th year in undergrad? Should I do a post-baccalaureate program geared towards applying to med school or should I just try to take the required science courses for med school in that 5th year and then apply to med school after? .. I could really use some advice and knowledge.. Thank you

    I am a junior in highschool and I have been struggling with deciding what I want to do as a career. All my life its basically been a tie between Art and being a Doctor. (Two totally different things, right?) i was wondering if theres any way I would be accepted into a med school with a major in Fine Arts and a minor in Chemistry. Would it be better if I tried to double major art and Chemistry? I love school and I've always been a straight A student, but I have time management issues sometimes and that makes me hesitate pursuing a medical career. Advice?

    +Emma Lanley Hi Emma, I'm a pre-med college student, and the way I've come to understand this is that you technically major in anything and still attend medical school. One of my best friends is actually a pre-med Classics major. You would still need to take certain science classes that are required for medical schools, but that would be on top of your major classes. The MCATs also only test your knowledge of those core science classes, so if you can do well on those subjects without majoring in them, that's okay. Once you get into college, figure out what is best for schedule/study skills. A minor vs. a major in chemistry doesn't make too much of a difference as long as you know your chemistry!

  • @SLPtoMD

    @SLPtoMD

    Hmm that's not a very positive way of looking at things. What Andrea was saying in the video is what is true for MOST people. Not necessarily all. Personally, I had a job all through undergrad and had very low grades in my first couple years, mediocre in my third and good in my final. I went back and upgraded a couple of my lowest first year course grades and then applied for my masters degree and got in and EXCELLED in grad school. There are ways to make things work for you. You need to seek them out. School isn't a one-size-fits-all kind of deal. Find a tutor or someone in your class to help make your study time more efficient to help get your grades up. Consider doing something else in the medical field first, to make money meanwhile improving your application by retaking courses if possible, and then apply to med school as a nontraditional student. My main point here is to not get all down thinking Andrea has just told you you won't get in. Use her words as motivation.

    Hm. I don't think Andrea is saying that, but be practical, medical schools aren't accepting students with C's and D's... Maybe you had a rough patch but you owe it to yourself to be real about the situation. No one knows your situation better than yourself. False hope without really honing in on your current situation, will only cost you time and money. Best of wishes to you!!!!

    I just want to add my 0.2cents. While I do agree with Andrea in this video that the pre-Med track is a step-by-step process in determining whether medical school is for you, I think how well you do in college now shouldn't be the only yes or no factor. Many of us may not reach the level of maturity by the time we start college, so putting our minds to excel in these vigorous pre-Med courses can be challenging -- And that's absolutely ok! There is always plan B -- Do a post-bacc, get a special master's degree. You can always do it as long as your will is there! I am sure that Andrea did not mean for you to give up your passion simply because you may not be doing well in school at the moment. However, I do believe that she was trying to highlight the rigor of medical school, and just reminding us that medical school is not a bed of roses. Best of luck to you my fellow pre-med -- WE'VE GOT THIS!

    Hey Mortar! You definitely still have a chance :) I think that if you are struggling with grades and it becomes a recurring problem, it is simply a good time to reevaluate. If you are not enjoying your path and are finding yourself struggling and are unable to find study strategies to help, I think Andrea is saying that you should not worry since there are other ways to be involved in healthcare if that is your passion. If you are very passionate about still making it to medical school though, there are definitely ways to move beyond bad grades, to find new ways to excel, and to work on a well rounded application. It may just take you a little bit longer. Also medical schools will take your personal financial struggles and your work experience into consideration as you apply! Good luck!

    I'm drawing a link between diabetes mellitus type 2 and the insulin signaling problem on the PI3K/AKT/mTOR triacylglycerol and di- are building up in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes and skeletal muscle. The obesity epidemic is increasing the vastness of adipocytes within the peritoneum. In a euglycemic state, human sensitive ligase, is breaking down the fatty acids (acetoacedic acid and Beta- hydroxybuturic acid) and putting them in blood stream where they will bind to albumin and taken to hepatocytes to be converted into ketone bodies, and can be taken to skeletal muscle to be oxidized for energy. In obese people, too much free fatty acids are released into the blood stream. The hepatocytes and skeletal muscle gets bogged down, so it will convert the free fatty acids back into triacylglycerol in their own cytoplasm as a reserve, by binding it to propane- 1,2,3- triol. Essentially, it is kind of slowly converting into an adipocyte itself. Making the cell insulin resistant downstream. Eventually that will happen to beta cells upstream in the pancreas. We got around that insulin signaling problem in type 2 diabetes. We can solve the other one for cancer research. Rich CNA

    Very vague, and didn't even know accurate information. Optometry school avg gpa: ~3.3 MD: 3.75 DO: 3.4-3.6 According to the AAMC, ~98 percent graduate from US MD schools. Be more concise with your explanations, and don't put others down. Dislike!

    Mehmet Cosan It's your language that's vague and you're the one putting a helpful video down. Insecure much? Why don't you make your own video instead of dictating others who are innocently doing a casual video of advice for aspiring med students? Your trolling won't be tolerated by decent people here. Comment disliked! Now go and make your own "accurate" video and rant over there instead.
