"I think you should pay for someone to make you music, you shouldn't pay for an asset pack of music" (53:25) This line of thinking that only unique things are worthy comes across as very elitist. Packs of both art and music provide a trade off between uniqueness and cost effectiveness. The argument that everything has to be unique or it isn't virtuous (14:16) is basically saying you think hobby devs (with time and money constraints) are somehow dishonourable and thus don’t deserve to be in the marketplace. I think any game designed to bring joy to the player deserves more respect. Thanks for the discussion. I enjoyed listening along.

This is a good point, but I think we were all thinking about it from the perspective of people wanting to release commercial games to the public. There is going to be a subset of the audience that will recognize a piece of music especially if it's used in an important scene or area. But it is true, that if you're making a game for fun or as a hobby this isn't something you should be concerned about. Very good point thanks for watching :)

I think another way of looking at this is comparing like painting to collage. Both are totally valid forms of art. But I think most people would look at painting as a "higher" form of art. However you can't really say whether this is true or not because it is subjective to the individual. Either way I can definitely see both sides to the argument. I myself use mostly all my own art because I find it more gratifying. I might appreciate the effort that goes into someones work more if they are making their own art, than if they are using assets, but that said it doesn't make them any less valid or useful.

Yeah, I think this is what I was trying to say, I don't think there should be someone saying you can or cannot use assets, and I'm sure many people would agree. Thanks for watching mate!

@@kobedev Yeah totally agreed. Honestly I was thinking about it more. I came to the conclusion that art assets are made by artists. Which is to say their effort and work shouldn't be discredited if the work wasn't made for a specific game. To mz's point tho as well, despite that maybe how I logically feel I could see myself reacting to a game that uses assets and think "they could have made their own stuff". But I think that's more reactionary and not completely fair to everyone who doesn't have art skills.

@@Beets_Creations oh 100% it’s not the most controversial topic so either side could be considered reasonable really

I think it depends on how it is marketed and presented. If part of the appeal of the game and the way it is marketed is check out this indie game they made it all themselves like Stardew Valley or Undertale it should be mostly game dev made but if not it doesn't really matter. There is also some skill to blend assets to make a cohesive work. Doing it all yourself is a mission, I think only other game Devs realize how talented and dedicated you have to be to make it all yourself, thats why i think making games is the highest form of art because it draws form all mediums, visual art, music and storytelling as well as math's and science.
