Pre-Emergent: Too Soon?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Is it too soon for Pre-Emergent in your lawn? Well... that depends. You need to put down Pre-Emergent before soil temperatures reach an average of 55 degrees. At that point weeds, especially crabgrass, begin to germinate. If that happens then you will be fighting weeds more than necessary throughout the lawn season. Pre-Emergent suppresses seed germination for 4-6 weeks depending on which product you use. The two most common pre-emergents are Prodiamine and pendimethalin. This year I am using Scott's Halts, which uses pendimethalin.

This is perfect. I’ve been a follower for awhile and also live in the Nashville area so came looking for exactly this since you’ve been dormant for a bit. I figured you’d pop up soon with this info. Thanks for delivering! 😃

I just found your video, completely randomly, as I'm sipping my coffee and looking for prodiamine data. I didn't know such a thing such as the soil temperature website existed. You sir have just saved me from sweating bullets. Thank goodness I have a few more days before I need to put down my application. I'm in North Carolina, haha. Will be hitting some GCI turf TTTF that is just now starting to wake up. Thanks much, for the good information!

Thanks for the video. I live in Smyrna so just a little South of you. Have been waiting for those average temps to get in the 50's but like you said better sooner than later. I have ordered from Yard Mastery and GCI. We had a house built and have been here 2.5 years and have had my lawn treated prior but decided to try it on my own this year. I have around 19K sq ft so no easy task for me. Retired so have plenty of spare time. Looking forward to more of your videos!

Sprayed prodiamine last week and then it came a flood! Hopefully it didn’t wash it all away.

@@TheLawnShark I don’t have very many weeds so if it did get washed away I’ll just spray them with Image.

what about a split application of your crabgrass pre-emergent. some have suggested by splitting the application i.e. 1/2 when you are getting closer to the 50 to 55 degree range and then the second application 4 weeks later. from my understanding seeds germinate for crabgrass well into the early summer. Its not like bam it hits 55 degrees and all the seeds germinate but rather they continue to germinate for a couple months. By splitting the application to have a longer period of coverage and are less likely to be too soon or too late.

That's a good point. Either a split application or another application 4-6 weeks later. I was planning on applying more in 4-6 weeks with a fertilizer mixed in.

Nice bleep part.lol . Its seems everyone thinks they are an expert these days. I just put down my pre emergent last week with the soil temps going up here in San Antonio. Looking forward to your next video. Any big projects for the yard or the next video just going to be a fertilizer and or soil amendment product?

LOL Glad you laughed. For the next couple videos it's just Spring prep, like Grub control and Fungus control. As for big projects... I hope not! 😂 My wife and I are planning on some additional landscaping in the flowerbeds and our back hill, but hopefully that is it!
