Pray for North Island New Zealand..!! Heavy rain causes havoc in Gisborne
A State of Emergency was declared in Wairoa and Heretaunga when heavy rain hit, causing 115 people to be evacuated. Rivers such as the Waipaoa and Wairoa have exceeded danger levels, prompting widespread flood warnings, including emergency mobile phone alerts. Roads, including State Highway 35, were closed due to flooding and landslides.
There was a power outage in Wairoa, and there were blackouts in Mahia, Mahuga, Tuahuru, Onenui, Rototahi, Hata, Anaura Bay, Mata, Tapuaenoa, Waimata Valley, Riverside Road, Kanakania, Waigake, Raupanga, Ruakituri and Whangara. Dozens of Wairoa residents have been forced to evacuate as officials fear the town's storm-swollen river could cause further flooding.
The northern Hawke's Bay town has been under a local state of emergency since 06.36am, with rising waters prompting the evacuation of 115 people, including 90 residents of Kopu Rd and McLean St to Wairoa's Memorial Hall.
