Prawning season started early! (catch, clean, cook)

G'day Legends, Well it looks like prawning season started early up here! I was lucky enough to sneak out for a great session throwing the cast net in the mighty Caboolture river. We had to work for them and even got rained on but ended up getting a great feed of prawns!

My Nan and I used to spotlighting/scoopnetting for them on the south coast NSW at all hours of the night, but there you go, it seems tides and moons are more important. Great episode, the happiness on the ole boys face at not having to throw a heavy net was priceless!

What we do in the Gulf of Mexico is tie a rope on a can of cat food and poke holes in it. Then throw it in the water and wait about ten minutes and then cast the net over the can. We get about 100 shrimp each time we pull in the net.

Then do you just drain them before you cook them? Also if your prawning at night and not cooking then for another day or two, what’s the best way to store them fresh?

Sammy,.. l told you to steam them in a salted honey and lime mix.. those little tiddlers .. 4 minutes or if you see air bubbles along the spline meat area under the shell. The real secret is to take them out of the heat and flush them in cold water until they cool down, then drop them into iced salty water.. sweet as, and yeah keep testing them as they chill down, best done with a cold beer or 2 in hand. Whipped up some Madras Curry/ lime juice/ white wine/ Garlic and oil for a pan fried bunch of 15/25 Endeavours for our wraps last night.. l think l won lotto for desert

@@SammyHitzkeFishing I don't know how much mustard powder he used but from memory I only tasted a hint of it, they tasted alright to me with a cold beer. But for mine it's hard to beat Honey and Sweet Chilli Prawns cooked on the BBQ or in a Wok although prawns with a sprinkle of Lemon Pepper and straight on BBQ is not bad either.

If y’all used an American style cast net with a bridle you could make many more casts in a shorter period of time.

G'day Karl, Yeah these are specifically for prawns. For piper you'd probably want a bottom pocket net, not a top pocket like this one.
