It helps keep it alive that's what my dad had to do when I chopped the top of my finger off in a door and if he didn't go put it in ice my finger would be permanently shorter

That's what you should do, put it near ice so the doctors may be able to reattach the thumb. Correct me if im wrong but you need to put the thumb in a cold towel surrounded by ice.
