this is because clown is a hard class to master that has extremely powerful abilities should you become a veteran and survive to high level; someone playing clown is someone who knows the game inside and out, and you should fear them

The list of events when I got a high level clown on my ship. - Security Officer. - Guarding the unsecured weapons in the armory. - Leave for a moment. - Clown joins, sneaks in, steals a revolver with six rounds. - Confront him, he doesn't shoot, and runs off to live in one of the ballast tanks. - Inform the crew that the clown lives in the balast tanks and not to disturb him. - Someone tries to kill the clown - Intervine, standing between the two with a shotgun, clown returns to its ballast tank. - Much later, being attacked by lots of creatures. - Clown emerges from the ballast tanks, helps us fight them off and repair. Returns to ballast tank. - Eventually becomes a part of our crew, helping with mining, and tries to save one of our guys who got downed while mining. - Accidentally crush the clown with the sub. T-T

Many players who are at the peak of their skill choose clown because they don't need the class buffs to be good at their job.

Clowns in fiction: frail goofballs with big red noses and makeup Clowns in barotrauma: beefy and unsettling humanoids dressed as circus figures with completely alien brainwave patterns.

if you get a flash and throw it you can pick it up again and throw an empty grenade at people. gets me killed 80% of the time.

@@komarovosevastopol with the Talent Perk system, Assistants can get buffs in the Clown skill tree when fully clothed, allowing crew buffs with a horn, emergency repairs with a horn, not needing pressure suits outside, and its final ability has a chance of implosion kill on a toy hammer hit.

I still do not know how this is not more popular or at least well-known than it is after all this time.
