filling a sketchbook spread with (simplified) Loomis portraits ◆ but it's House of the Dragon

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A (re-) introduction to the Loomis method for drawing simple portraits, as I practice in my sketchbook. Using just two colored pencils, I go over the basic process of sketching a Loomis head and then sketch character portraits from House of the Dragon to show my step-by-step process for different head angles and proportions. I hope this is helpful, as it certainly helped me to get back into quick portrait sketches! #drawwithme

I use colored pencils from the Derwent Lightfast line, but any light, muted shade combined with a darker, intense one should work for this technique.

I discovered the Loomis method a few weeks ago and I have found it to be very helpful.

it's so helpful! I rarely do a "full" Loomis head, but use parts of it when I have trouble with a portrait :)

Really? I was the first view and everything this time? I use the loomis method myself when drawing faces, but I have yet to really deep dive into it. I've been meaning to, but as I've mentioned in previous comments (if you happen to remember, no worries if you don't), I am still struggling with my art. I've made some great progress with that and am now tempted to do the 100 heads challenge to improve on this method! (I won't have a time limit for mine though, usually it's 10 days or something). Anyway, as always I love seeing videos from you. Beautiful work as always :)

Hi! Thank you for watching - it's definitely not my usual posting time or day :) And yes, I remember and I'm glad to hear it's going better! The 100 heads challenge is something I've been eyeing for a while, but a bit scared to start. I think taking away the time limit makes it much more approachable, those ten days only sound incredibly difficult and might just be stressful in the end. I might have to give at least a 50 heads challenge a try if you're going ahead with it ;)

@@evydraws-art That sounds good, maybe do a part 1 and part 2, 50 heads each with it not mattering how long it takes. I hope to try to keep them all in the same sketchbook, but that also depends on how much room I have in mine currently. Maybe even a head or two each time I go to do art as a warm up. 🤔

@TheBlackHatOutlaw I really like that idea! Before, I had a tiny sketchbook in which I only drew portraits - though not a hundred, just around eighty, and that was so much fun! Having them in a single sketchbook gives a very complete sense to a challenge like this (but I'd still be tempted to try different drawing materials so I'd probably draw some on different paper...) ✨

@@evydraws-art you could always perhaps add the different papers TO the sketchbook if it's the same size. I've seen people finish a challenge digitally, then print it out and add it to the sketchbook with the rest of it just so it is visible all in one place! Also, I think I really am going to do this this time as I already gathered my first 25 heads that I WANT to draw. Last time I tried, it was someone else's pinterest board that, like you mentioned in your video, I had no connection to. That made it boring.

@@TheBlackHatOutlaw oooh nice, I'm getting really excited for this idea! And just recently another artist showed me her sketchbook which had so many little cut-out paper pieces glued in, and that looked wonderful! And sounds like you're just about ready to go! I think personal connections - no matter what kind - really help so much with challenges like this! :)
