This is testing very basic vocabulary! I think students should learn by heart the phrases, "I don't understand", "I'm sorry, I don't know the word for that" and "could you repeat that please?" I teach my students that saying hello and goodbye is more important in France than it is elsewhere in Europe and FAR, FAR more important than in Asia!

Practice using french even in situations in the states. Explain to folks you are learning a new language, and what you are saying or trying to say. The idea is to learn it, practice it, and to be able to spontaneously hear, and reply to say the right thing at the right time. Sometimes a mistake will be made. A french canadian family at a local McDonald's was encountered. I tried to say I speak a little french, but it came out, I am a little french. The family laughed a bit, the 7 or 8 year old daughter barked at me, it's je parle un peu francais. Lesson learned.
