The voice on this recording is my father, LA poet, John Harris. He died yesterday, 90 years young. I never knew of this recording, just discovered it. The name of the poem he is reading is called "The Gospel According to John". Namaste.

Chris Harris-Smith Sorry for your loss i know how you feel believe me. I have to say this track is an absolute classic of the progressive house genre, featured in the sweet spot of arguably the best dj set of the genre James Holden Balance 005 cd1 a real masterpiece. In short your father's poetry (this poem anyway) is loved by countless music lovers. Peace, love, unity, respect!

I agree, the best this mix has ever sounded is on the Holden 2 Disc Set. The unique bassline comes across even more powerfully. And he didn't just turn up the bass either. That whole set is fantastically balanced/produced.

Tbh I much prefer the Balance 019 as I find it to be even more creative and timeless sounding. It's a bit more challenging as it's not as club friendly as it has a more artistic approach to electronic but imo is way more rewarding after multiple listens.

This song takes me back 5 years or so. I used to be on a strict "guitar only" diet, but when I heard this track in a set on the global underground label I was blown away. I thought "there IS intelligence in electronic music" then came James Holden, Nathan Fake, Sasha, Luke Chable etc etc, then I went to raves and outdoor parties, then came the after parties, the chaos and putting University "on hold" then I came to my senses and graduated, it was one hell of a ride xD

You pick up this working girl, who's hooked on smack, who hustles and scores. "That's all I do," she says. She says, "ten bucks for head, fifteen for half and half." She says, "three hits a day at thirty-five per." You say, "that's seven tricks a day at least." "But," she says, "sometimes I get lucky." "Once this guy gives me a bill and a half just to eat me. Only time I ever came." You figure you can save her. You sell your color TV. That keeps her off the streets a whole day. You hock your typewriter for one jolt. Then your shotgun, your watch. A week later, you say, "listen, I'm a little short." But she says, "no scratch, no snatch." You say, "look, it is better to give." "But," she says, "beat off, creep." One night they spot you on the street in your skivvies, trying to sell your shoes. You tell them who you are, but they nail you. Then she happens by, and she says, "Christ, you look fucked." She says, "hang tough." But you don't say anything. You just think, what a bum rap for a nice, sensitive guy like me.

I do love this track. It's not singing lyrics, just your normal speech for lyrics. Not only does this make them more understandable, but also adds a sense that you ARE being spoken to. And about what? Finding the meaning of this song is as glorious as listening to it. It's a trippy tune, no doubt. All on top of the fact that the music itself is amazing.

The author (uncredited and without permission, by the way) is an L.A. poet named John Harris. The poem is called "The Gospel According to John." You can view the original version, read by the original author, on KZread.

JoshuaWinkleman Because the producer PQM who used the sample of John Harris never gave credit to him, even though this track was massive and very lucrative appearing in various mix compilations, and PQM register this sample as his that's why...

Jay Cabrales Copying is the basis of innovation. Sometimes the beliefs prevent us from being original, as the laws of intellectual property misunderstood, and that only favors large transnational corporations. Beware of those beliefs that kill the human creative spirit. Cheers!

I fucking love this song. First heard it back when Prog. House was the king of the dance floor circa 2004/05. Sounds just as great as it did back then.
