Sandra, it’s as if you were reading my mind!! In my PT lesson with a new teacher this week, we had a long discussion about the lack of a clear explanation to the Anglo native speaker on how to decode the algorithm of PPS v imperfect! The big one for me, which you feature here, is the use of imperfect in phrases such as AGE.. “ela tinha 18 anos quando foi para a universidade” instead of ela teve.. to the Anglo mind, she WAS/HAD 18 years and that’s now in the past, but from what I understand, the Portuguese mindset is that her age was not permanently fixed and so must be continuous and imperfect.. is that a good justification? It seems to be that, just as with ser/estar, for Anglo Saxon (since this is the same issue for German) there is no such construct and so every mental thought has to jump through this grammatical filter, whereas natives come to it totally naturally, where twords such as ANTIGAMENTE will then trigger the Imperfect. 😢😢😢😢😢😂😂😂😂

Oi Sandra, muito obrigado por esta lição. I am a retired professional (American), living in Brasil, and struggling with this complex language. I have checked out many, many Portuguese didactic sites and your teaching is, for me, the most effective. BTW, your English is excellent, although I find your Portuguese accent "funny"! thanks again.

How to study the pps ? Is there any easy method to remember?

I understand the differences between when PPS and imperfect should be used, but the difficulty arises with the irregularity of the PPS. The imperfect is quite straightforward by comparison and with few irregularities. I once used to have to think carefully whether to use 'fui' or 'foi', as I hadn't mastered first and third person conjugation. Then, in the middle of a conversation, it can be challenging to suddenly come up with 'I gave' in PPS, knowing that it's going to be irregular. Is it 'doi', 'dei', ' dai', or something else?!! 😁😀 I have an app on my phone with Portuguese verbs, and I have saved a list of the most common ones. No problem with present, imperfect, future or conditional tenses, it's always the PPS, or 'pretérito' that's the most difficult. But I'm getting there.

Wow. I know you are explaining this as best as you can but I'm accepting the fact that I will always sound "wrong" speaking Portuguese. Too many contextual devises to be preoccupied with.😭🤯

I totally understand. It’s very hard to remember all these rules when you are speaking. Sometimes it’s easier to focus on one at a time and once you have that rule down focus on another one. Continuação de bons estudos!
