POWERSTROKE VS CUMMINS TOWING 25K GROSS. QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I decided to make a video because of comments made by PD Diesel Power in a recent video where he discussed the towing characteristics of the Cummins compared to the Powerstroke. Hope this helps answer some questions.

I’m a fan of you and Paul. You both have solid points. My work truck 6.7 F-350 My personal truck 6.7 3500 Ram They have both been in the shop for service work. They have both pulled 15-18k trailers They are both good trucks. Fords faster Cummins is more fuel efficient Cummins does pull at lower RPM and the exhaust brake works better. Aisin runs cooler. Ford has much better steering wheel feel, lighter, tighter, smoother. I like the FX4 with the locking rear diff option. Ford rides and handles better. Ram feels more stout for work in my opinion. I love both trucks you can’t go wrong with either one. Get whatever has better costumer service reputation in you local area. Because they all have issues here and their.

I think this has to be the most objective comment I’ve seen on any Ford vs Ram videos. Un-emotional. You really nailed it about local dealerships. They make all the difference on an owner’s experience because I don’t care WHAT brand car or truck you buy, you WILL be taking it in for something over the course of ownership (of any length of time).

Too much worry on trans temp. Pretty much everyone worries about engine temps, oil temps, and trans temps like they were driving 1969 trucks, not 2019 models. Aisin in Rams have a few more failures than 6 speed Torqshifts in Fords so the higher fluid temps seem to not be an issue.

I run cummins Brand on my big rigs 4 of them to be exat . Bought a 2014 ram 4500 for my hot shot TRL and it fell apart on us after 40,000 miles , Never again !! Constant derates , took it into the shop on a regular basis for Dpf DEF issues, brakes went out at 30,000 mi and the cab was noisy and plastics making noise on dirt roads. Now we have 2017 F450 and ZERO problems

Thanks for that video! I have always had ford trucks and I'm sticking with them, they are great trucks, I like how they are built last a long long time! And the powerstroke and Cummins make the tq at the same rpm, same with the power so they should be pretty close to the same tow rpm.

I appreciate you doing this. According to him, no one is harder on a truck than he is. He’s always talking about towing parachutes and off roading with a gooseneck behind him. He’s not even towing with weight heavy enough to require a dually but apparently he’s the authority in hotshot trucking.

Great video buddy 😊👍I knew it wouldn’t run above 3000 on a hill! The “Cummins better low end Torque and pulls better at lower rpm” was true before 6.7 Power Stroke came out but 6.7 Cummins and 6.7 Power Stroke are designed both with peak torque at 1800 rpm and peak hp at 2800 rpm and therefore respond almost exactly the same with a load on a hill. I honestly don’t think a 6.7 Cummins would’ve done any better or different because their “more low end torque” is only below 1500 rpm and then only slightly higher torque per rpm and after 1500 the 6.7 Power Stroke has a better torque per rpm especially after 1800 the Cummins torque curve abruptly falls off whereas the Power Stroke holds almost full torque till peak hp at 2800 rpm

Thanks for the video. I also didn't think the Powerstroke would have too much trouble pulling weight up a grade. I mean Ford wouldn't be foolish enough to make an engine and tranny that wouldn't be able to pull it off. The main thing that I know for sure the Cummins has over the PSD is fuel economy while towing. Also, I cannot stand ppl who pass you to get in front, then slow down. Sometimes when they do that, I turn my high beams on and creep up a feet or 2 behind them (yes I know I shouldn't do that but they shouldn't be pulling off that crap either)

  • @Alan-tr5uj

I'm pro-diesel period; i feel ALL the big heavy duty diesel pickups are incredible machines today. Super reliable, seemingly endless pulling power, and optional interiors that would make a loaded Benz blush. Yes the I6 is a better foundation for towing period-- why do so many Semi tractors use the I6 layout??? It's proven out to be the ideal layout for towing, reliability, and fuel economy over decades. That being said--- the V8's are FAST; even stock, reliable of course- but they don't achieve the fuel economy of a Cummins, not are they as efficient while towing heavy loads.. They're an ideal foundation for a drag truck, or a stoplight scrapper; even a solid sport truck; responding great to mods. Yeah, there are fast Cummins I6's-- they're not hard to get serious speed from either-- but from the factory -- even with their torque advantage-- towing is the name of the game, priority 1. If I had my way, I would drive a different brand heavy duty diesel pickup every week, and rotate. They're all bad ass.

I think his major experience pulling with Powerstrokes is with the 7.3 liter. The big things he watches are the trans, oil and coolant temps. It appears that the cooler the engine stays pulling heavy the longer the life of the motor.

Great video man. Gotta come to B.C. we have hills lol! That’s interesting about the transmission temps. I have never noticed my 07 6.0 go above 190 or so but I do have a banks torque converter in it. I’m frequently pushing 26,000lbs combined with it. I made one long trip with a load that was around 24k combined when it was stock and fairly new and it did seem to run hotter but I didn’t have any gauges. I’ve since installed the full banks power pack, banks brake and water methanol. Everything has been done to the engine, heads fire ringed, studded, oil cooler, egr delete etc. With those kinds of loads my water and oil temps with often be up around 212 when working it hard but my trans temp stay around 170-180ish for the most part. There are a few short but really steep hills around 18% when pulling an 18-19k trailer that will cause my trans temp to push up to 190-192 or so and once it’s up there is stays there until I stop driving or don’t work the truck

workplaytv I posted a short video a little while back towing a ridiculously heavy dump trailer up a short little hill. I had my guys load the trailer at a job site and they overloaded it and then didn’t tarp it over the weekend and of course it rained. I was shocked at my scale ticket when I got to the dump :/ I should do some videos. I also run Rickson wheels 19.5” rims and Toyo M608Z tires in 285/70R19.5” what a difference compared to the stock 20” tires and rims. I’m thinking about installing a Garret Powermax turbo but I’m not sure if it will be worth it. The factory fuel system is only good for about 500rwhp and I’m milking all she has. The water methanol adds a lot of power under boost. I haven’t dyno’d it but it probably add another 100hp and 175ft-lbs. It’s a different kind of power than adding more air/fuel. It’s less noticeable. It makes the truck pull like it’s not under load rather than it being like you’re hammering on it up a hill. It’s enough that with the factory tires and rims when I would punch it it would spin the tires on the rims. Power is definitely addictive! The trick is doing it safely

Hey your comment of a transmission constantly up shifting/downshifting happens. I have a Ram 1500 that does it when I tow my 16’ enclosed trailer. On the other hand my Cummins 6.7 3500 doesn’t even know it’s pulling anything. Both in the same condition on the same highway. So I can understand just because your truck doesn’t do it doesn’t mean another truck won’t. Great content

I know the 2017-19 and up 6.7 don’t hit 3,500-4K rpms because drive our company truck my work that tows our gooseneck all the time and I’ve never seen it go that high. Plus TFLtruck maxes out the towing weight on the new super duty’s on the Ike highway out in Colorado and they’ve never hit 4K rpms usually stays around 2-3k rpms at full throttle usually down in around 3rd gear.

I believe we are talking about what creates longevity in a motor. Both engines have plenty of power and do well at towing. But, inline engines like to lug and make torque comfortably at low rpm. This equates to not shifting and keeping rpms low. Less rotation (rpm) means less wear and fuel consumed over the lifetime of a truck serving in a fleet. This does vary with the operator and his or her demands and leads to different rates of wear and fuel consumed. That right foot input can result in vastly different experiences over the trucks life. Also people can be picky and biased with limited experience, but some generalizations can be made here about diesel reliability, ease of repair, longevity, etc, But by no means are your experiences going to be the same. In the end, both Ram and Ford can impress and also piss you off. I've been royally bent over by the Ford 6.0 so off to shop Ram I go. I love diesel content and like what you both do. Keep it up and don't take it too personally as experiences vary. Also, we have the diesel power wars but more importantly we have now entered an awesome transmission wars period that will really benefit owners, and a place Dodge has had many complaints before the Aisin and even with it. Looks like we have more transmission variants to look forward to soon. Thank you both for giving us your experiences.

Bravo. Well done. I know I always say it but I have owned both and towed same load a bunch with both not as heavy but travel trailers tow different cause of wind and drag. I found my tuned Cummins towed same as my 19 Powerstroke. Noticed my Powerstroke likes to tow a little faster if I set cruise at 70 it almost never downshifts. But I don't understand people's problems with downshifting it seems like that's what a trans is supposed to do keep the motor in its power band. Lugging a Motor below powerband seems like it wouldn't be good for anything.

I have an F550 6.7 Powerstroke service truck at work and I own a ‘14 Ram 3500 with the 6.7 Cummins. I think what PD is trying to say is the redline rpm starts at 3000 rpm and no matter what I’ve pulled or how I drive it will not get above 3000 rpm. The Powerstoke when you stick your foot to the floor it will get to a higher rpm (“screaming” as PD says). I know there is a big gearing difference between the two but IMHO the Ram pulls a lot nicer and it’s quieter.

Trailspeed703 And don’t forget that Ram still has the 68RFE as well as Aisin Japanese tranny. Why on earth they didn’t build ONE good 8 or 10 speed and have ONE high output engine only, I’ll never understand. The idea of building your own subpar tranny and buying a decent one is dumb. Use the same factory that builds 68 RFE and tool it to build twice as many of one good one. No one buys a Ram just because of Aisin ...but the Ford and Duramax joint building the new HD 10-spd is genius. One factory building for two separate manufacturers...one good Tranny. V8 diesels will have to shift more because they make more power at high revs . Where as a straight 6 diesel or Cummins in this comparison has more torque down on the low end, therefore it will be able to hold its speed without shifting or searching for gears less. You will definitely Find that the v8 diesels will shift more like a gas motor and they are quicker off the line. But the straight 6 will hold a gear longer going up a grade because that’s where the low end torque comes in. Your most likely not really going to notice unless your at or close to your max tow rating.

I've had both and the inline 6 shifted the same as the v8 no truck is gonna tow everything in 6th gear with no downshifting....the v8 is just plain fun to drive.... the inline 6 was a slug in comparison,,,the Cummins torque curve actually falls off sooner than the powerstroke and they both hit peak torque around 1600-1800 rpm.. the powerstroke has a flat torque curve which is good...I don't know why everyone assumes the v8 diesels have to scream to get work done and shift like crazy...yes the Cummins is more efficient by design but they dropped it in a shitty truck, the trucks are starting to rust badly after 4-5 years and I don't live in the rust belt either

The Cummins and powerstroke comparison is bunk. The ford makes 935lbft at 1800rpm and the Cummins(2018) is 930lbft at 1800rpm. The horsepower is far off Ford has 450hp@2800=844lbft. Ram has 385hp@2800rpm is 722lbft/ even the new 400hp is only 750lbft at 2800rpm. It drives me nuts when people say”the Cummins does it with less revs”. The gearing in the Austin is less ideal than the Ford Ford. Ram. 3.97. 1st. 3.75 2.32. 2nd 2.00 1.52. 3rd. 1.34 1.15. 4th. 1.00 0.86. 5th. 0.77 0.67. 6th. 0.63. Given both trucks have the same 4.10(DRW) axle ratios the Ford has more available torque(which is power) to do the job. Above the more power the gearing multiplies the torque better to the axle. 935lbft x 3.97:1= 3711lbft at the driveshaft then x 4.10 = 15218lbft at 1800rpm in 1st gear 930lbft x 3.75:1= 3487lbft x 4.10:1 axle =14298@ 1800 in 1st. Same applies in 4th gear. 935lbft x 1.15 x 4.10= 4408lbft to the wheels for the Ford 930lbft x 1.00 x 4.10= 3813lbft to the wheels for the Ram, what I find funny is the “1000lbft” engine and Aisin barely out doo the current 935 PSD w/6spd. 1000lbft x 3.75 x 4.10= 15375lbft at the wheels(1st gear). In 4th gear there is no advantage/ because 400hp@2800rpm is only 750lbft(400hp x 5252/2800rpm=750lbft). So 750lbft x 1.00:1 x 4.10= 3075lbft(4th gear@2800rpm) Vs the Ford 450hp(450hp@2800 is 844lbft) 844lbft x 1.15:1 x 4.10= 3979lbft at the axle. So anyone that says a lower power(torque) Ram pulls better is on crack. Math supports the fact the stronger Ford output wins. Supplanted by the gearing. Gear for gear the torque shift is better tor towing(better multiplication until 6th gear) just waiting for the the 10speed gear ratios and the power outputs of the new Powerstroke. The Duraturd with the 10spd and 910lbft, out do the 1000lbft Cummins w/6spd 910lbft x 4.70:1(1st gear) = 4277lbft@ driveshaft vs 1000lbft x 3.75:1 = 3750lbft. A GM with a 3.42:1 axle is dumping 14627lbft to the wheels vs Ram’s 15375lbft w/4.10(3.75:1 1st gear)/ i doubt Gm is going to force a 3.42:1 down their customers DRW throats lol

I think what PD Diesel was saying is that when he runs his RAM 3500, on the flats he tows in the 1500 - 1800 rpm, and when he goes up a grade, say a 6 - 7% grade, he is seeing 2100 - 2200 RPM. With the Ford on a 5,6, 7% grade that's when he was seeing 3000+ rpm.

i cant say with the 2019 cummins, but i can say with the previous generation cummins, in our area(since u know i live in NB) i have towed 27k with a 3500 cummins dually similar to pauls trucks, as for comparing the trucks the cummins will lumber down and push harder in the lower rpms and hold them longer and grunt the engine alot longer while loosing speed, but once it drops enough speed it drops a gear and start to go to 2600 to 3000 rpms just like a V8 duramax or powerstroke, the V8's do downshift faster than the cummins to get into the horsepower band, in my opinion torque gets u going and horsepower gets you up the hills. end of the day all 3 trucks get the job done, i've seen plenty of all 3 go the distance, i have also seen them with a lot of issues. i tell everyone drive all 3 pick the truck u want and don't be surprised if u have an issue at some point. as for fuel mileage ofc the cummin the cummins does get better mileage and personally its a heavy duty truck i could care less about milage, but in pauls line of work that matters big time.

@Kevin Rogers I agree 100% spot on with all of this... I've owned all three recently. The only thing I'll add is the Ford is the best/easiest driving truck unloaded and is still just as capable as the others towing. The Cummins drives like a tractor unloaded with the Cummins inline... But the Cummins also tows at a lower RPM easier but if you want to stand on the Cummins it seems as tho you've already reached max WOT throttle any past 45%.. Kinda like no more to give... The Powerstroke does less with less throttle but has more to give through the linear position of the long pedal... I ended up selling the Cummins and the Dmax... Kept my 2018 Ford as my personal choice favorite. You cannot go wrong with any of the three...All great trucks...

I have (2)16' powerstrokes that i hotshot with for 4 months and when they ran 8 plus hours across the west coast at high speeds hitting mountain passes they would start to shift funny, mainly holding 5th gear. They, also started to get worse fuel economy after 8 hrs of driving at those speeds. But it took extremely long distances at high speeds running 8 plus hours straight to get the fords to act up and get bad fuel economy. Both drivers complained about the same thing. The extremes of hotshotting have nothing to do with pulling a load down the road for a short trip. We run are trucks 6 to 7 weeks straight only turning them off on the 34hr restart, because the driver lives in the back seat and needs either ac or heat to sleep. Running 10,000 to 15,000 miles a month - 550 to 750 miles a day. Honestly, i wouldn't own a ram for my personal use because they are such a rough ride, my wife hates the rough ride of the rams. I loved my 05 cummins, but the truck 3 grab handles driverside 2 passenger 2 hooks in back, 3 drivers door seals 2 passenger door seals, one steering gear box, it freaking cracked. The 2015 um nothing. My 2017 a rear driverside lock knob that my nephew broke off, and 2 cameras. Now I run a 400 acre farm, plus another ag property and am a deputy in harris county and make extra money doing remodel and building projects plus me and family are gear heads. I only average 30k a year and tend to swap right before a 100k miles. Now my 05 was dead center before bad emissions. I decides I'd push it and roll on. But 3 years in 100k on truck at best buy it was stolen. Taken to Mexico, along with 8 others. Dps caught it coming back across the border. They ran 100 miles plus at over 100 mph with 18 illegals including the bed. They decided to drive through king ranch, not through like you and I liked through gates trees and fences. Border patrol and dps couldn't keep up. After a long search it found wrecked into trees. They drove it out with tires facing different directions and all coolers and radiators ripped open. Then cut apart looking for drugs. Allstate insurance cut me a check for release... I tried half tons modified with air bags. Went back to diesels. So far I know why ford hasn't 80 plus percent of hd market. If I could my new truck with ford and a cummins engine I'd be sold. But I know I only have in new stuff not idi etc. Its not big sample but my experience.

Ford lost 12% hp from 440 crank to 387 wheel and lost 12.9% torque from 925 crank to 806 wheel and Chevy lost the most through the drivetrain because of a 3.73 axle ratio vs 4.10 on the other 2... Chevy lost 24% hp from 445 crank to 337 wheel and lost 15% torque from 910 crank to 771 wheel. It is not uncommon to lose around 15% of ur crank hp and torque through the drive train on a diesel truck. The factory numbers are Crank hp and torque and dyno numbers are wheel hp which is always 10-15% less than crank and more than that with a 3.73 rear like the Chevy had. It’s not that any of them were lying necessarily if you study the facts 😊Firepunk put his 2019 Ram high output on the dyno and it lost 10.4% torque through the drivetrain from 1000 crank to 897 at the wheel (dyno)

@@lw6735 I'm well aware of the difference between BHP and wheel hp. Just trying to make a point that Ford and Chevy bump there numbers up just to say best I class when in fact they are not. To add to that Ford sucks I've owned them and done with it. Chevy runs in my blood Literally... I can get the GM discount and all but yet I dont because Ram is a superior truck and theres nothing anyone can tell because I have owned and worked the holy dog mess out of them and the Rams kick ass on every aspect I appreciate your break down but again I am not totally ignorant to the difference and the fact is the Ram still loss less then the Ford and Chevy no matter how you want to twist or turn or try to explain it. But thanks for the reply.

PD Diesel is a Cummins guy and that’s cool but the new Fords are just as good I think your proving that with the three trucks you have. All of the big three trucks are really good now it’s really a matter of preference at this point. I prefer Ford because I build Super Dutys and I can tell you the 2020 is even better

Was hit on passenger side and it caught fire inside the cab on driver side almost trapping me inside during an accident. Use caution when traveling with children especially if they are strapped in to baby carrier or car seats. I would post pics here if I knew how.

I like both rigs and both channels but it's 2 different terrains honestly. Just to put it into perspective for everyone, the highest point in Nova Scotia is 1755 feet (535 meters), the highest peak in washington state is 14500 which is over 8 times as high. These hills you're rolling over are considered flat ground when you run through the cascade mountain range every day. Most people in Washington LIVE above 1755 feet. They drive the steep grades to and from work every day. The grade percentages Paul is hauling over and the passes (Steven's, Blewett, Snoqualmie, chinook) he's trucking through are far steeper and far longer than these ones. A lot of guys don't understand until they get out in the Rockies or cascades and see for themselves. I've been up the Ike Gauntlet in person that TFL truck test on, the cameras don't do it justice, and yet guys from Iowa and Nebraska are commenting on the videos like they know something about trucking hills cuz their grand pappy lives on a "steep" road and the grade is only like 3%. It's a whole different animal and a whole different way of life. The definition of a hill is WAY different depending on where you're at.

@@workplaytv True that brother. I didn't mean any offense towards any brand or channel you both seem like good dudes and I watch both videos. I also like all the trucks on the market so I don't have much of a dog in the fight other than I'd probably buy a Ford over Ram if I were in the market right now. I just see a lot of people commenting but don't have any idea the difference in the climate and all that between the 2 of you guys. Nobody has really mentioned the difference which is important when comparing.

You know I think the best thing you’re getting with the ram 3500 is its payload cap and very nicely done interior. I love that new ram but one thing that continues to be a turn off is where that dam oil filter is located on the Cummins lol. I know there are remedies for the messes and reroute kits but cmon, gotta take passenger front wheel off to change oil? I'm sure PD diesel has a faulty Towhaul device, especially if it's hunting for gears constantly. The Ford towing anything over 10,000 lbs should be in the 7th gear and 6-3 depends on the roads on heavier load's but shouldn't be any higher than 2700 rpm going 55 mph. A RAM will stay around the same but at a lower rpm. Yes I'm a mechanic and electrician.
