PowerSpout - History of the Smart Drive

Ғылым және технология

This section is a brief history of the Smart Drive permanent magnet motor used by leading whiteware brands such a Fisher and Paykel, Whirlpool, Maytag and similar product clones used by LG.
We show how a light can be power from such a unit and then outline the changes in the design over the last 20 years. We cover the 100, 80, 60, versions. Presented by Michael Lawley EcoInnovation Director and Design Engineer.

    I just took apart 4 Fisher Paykels 1 Maytag and one very large horizontal washer for the genis. The large horizontal washer has a quite large stator and the rotor has sheet metal on it's outside surface. Do you have any info on these large diameter rotors? Hello from the United States.

    Sorry, we get many variations of this question - Please visit PowerSpout and check out FAQ's (the "Dumb Questions" area - yes we know there are no dumb questions, just a bit of fun :) Basically, unless you have a naturally falling water source, micro hydro generation is not applicable. You can try, but you will always use more energy turning the turbine than you get out.

    PowerSpout But as a energy transformer? Solar energy pumps water to an elevated storage tank through the day and at night, is allowed to flow back to the lower reservoir (lifting pump obviously different)

    Very interesting and informative! I was thinking about the possibility of paralleling about 4 of these, for 2 projects, one as a generator, the second, as a bldc motor, with about 5kw 96v controller, I'm guessing the 100 would be best for the motor, and the 60 or newer for the generator, I'm thinking DC generator with gas/propane, to charge batteries for my offgrid house! What type charge controllers you guys use?

    Hi In one of your video's you said that you would charge a nominal fee to tell someone how to wire a Fisher Paykel motor for there application? I have a swimming pool, I'm going to use the pool pump to drive the smart drive motor using a centrifugal pump off the return side of the pool pump and coupling shaft to the smart drive. My question is, I have 120 Vac in my home can you tell me the best way to configure the smart drive for my application. Or ware can I find the necessary info ?.

    What size pelton wheel do you use for either the 100, 80 or 60 size rotors?? And where to buy? I have other questions for water supply and how much pressure. I will have about 40' of 4" PVC reduced to 3/4 with 15 foot fall. Is this all trial and error or is there charts to help with all this. I also subbed to your channel. Thanks for all your efforts!!

    Do the older 42 pole units generate more power at lower RPM's? It just seems logical, since more transitions happen per rotation.

    No, the electronics in the original machine convert the power from the wall socket into high voltage DC and then pulse it (in sequence) into the three windings. Google BLDC motor.

    Stay away from Samsung Stators all the Wire is Al.

  • @gravelydon7072

    @gravelydon7072

    4 жыл бұрын

    I wouldn't say stay away from them, just that you need to be aware of it. If AL wire was such a possible problem, none of the companies would use it under their washers. And guess what the overhead electric wires are that are strung all over the world. Yep, they are AL with often a single steel wire down the center to act as a carrier. In the case of Samsung stators, cut the wires to suit, scrape/sand off the enamel, coat with No Ox Id or equal, use a crimp terminal to join to copper wire. When done, you can coat the windings and wire with more enamel or varnish. I would worry more about the metal laminations in the stator rusting before the rotor wire having problems. Be sure to put a heavy coating on the area where the original terminations are such as an epoxy coating or such.

  • @gravelydon7072

    @gravelydon7072

    3 жыл бұрын

    And not all Samsung units have Al wire. There is at least one Model of their motors that have Copper windings. Look for units with a DON1500 motor in them. If you had to buy the stators new though, you'd suffer sticker shock.
