Powerslide NEXT 90mm // Unboxing & First Thoughts

/ mattburkeskates
I've wanted to skate a big wheel setup for months and months at this point, so thanks to the ol' stimulus check, I made the financially responsible decision to pick up a pair of skates to stay in shape over this quarantine period and beyond.
I knew for my first pair of big wheel skates that I wanted to stay somewhere in the 90mm to 100mm range, so when I came across the Powerslide Next 90mm in the burgundy/grey colorway, I was SOLD immediately!
Check out the video for my first impressions and quick first skate.

Pretty much every person on KZread who buys the nexts talks about the pressure point on the arches. I had the same issue at first, but after breaking them in I no longer have any trouble. It's just really hard to tell at first if a break in will fix it or if you should return them. Some people aren't as lucky as I was.

Same blisters with my PS Next 3x110. The boot is very stiff in the middle part if you fasten it really tightly. Only thing that helped was a heat gun molding the boot. After that it is finally comfortable and I love these skates.

So those frames are fully rockerable and fit 3x100 as well ?! Excellent ! When front rockered, the difference in handling on kizer trimax frames is huge. With 3x110 it feels like switching between a dragster and a GT. If the blisters and pressure points maintain, you should give neoprene footies a try, they work really, really well. Please keep the vids coming, I love watching them :)

  • @MattBurke820

Yeah, the frames are apparently rockerable in 3 different configurations. I’m clueless what all that does, so I’m sticking to the stock setup for now, but definitely going to look into the rocker options as well. I’ve been looking at some of those neoprene footies! I’ve been working with the actual insole in the liner to see if maybe that’s the culprit, but I’ll figure something out soon! Thanks for watching the videos, I appreciate you loving them! 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Just now seeing this comment! Are you still having the pressure point issue? I still have the MyFit liner in and I genuinely really like it now that I switched out the insoles. The problem I'm having is there's still a CRAZY pressure point in there and I can't figure out what part of the skate it's coming from, which is also a bit frustrating. I would LOVE to try out a pair of Intuition liners, but those things are light years out of my budget at the moment haha Is your pressure point completely gone? If it is, that would tell me that the issue is in the liner itself and would help me troubleshoot haha

Hi mate. I got nexts several months ago with 3x110 frames. 1. My fit liner should be heat mouldable? Insole as well? Definitely heat mould them to improve the fit! 2. Nexts have very thick extra “footbeds” (around 4-5mm thick I think). If you take it out - the top of your foot will have more space and it will overall change how they fit you. Give it a try and see for yourself. 3. The same as above with the shock absorber. 4. Before you get into 110 mm frames check the lenghts of the frames. I am wearing US 10.5 and the next 3x110 frame is too short for my boots (in my opinnion), 4x90 has a waaay better lenght for riding down stairs and doing different flat ground stuff. While the difference in speed is barely noticeable 🙄 Btw the colour looks fantastic! Thanks for the new video!

  • @MattBurke820

I heat molded the liner yesterday, actually, and WOW! Unbelievable difference in the fit already. I didn't heat the insole, but I don't think I like the insole? I bought a replacement one that I'm going to try out today to see if it helps with comfort. I've got a set of 3x110 frames in the mail right now, but I'll probably stick to the 4x90 for the reasons you're saying. The 3x110 center of gravity seems a bit off to me, so I'll have to get used to everything before I go that route. I'm about to head to a college campus to hit some stairs and get some speed around the empty campus. Stoked. Stay safe!

I took out the insole and put a Dr Scholls' one in and THAT has helped tremendously and I've got no more blister issues, thankfully, but there's still a super gnarly pressure point on the inside of my foot right under my ankle... super annoying and the ONLY part of the skates that I don't enjoy... but it's a pretty big issue haha I'll try to take one of the insoles out to see if that may drop my foot far enough to be out of range of the pressure point. What an annoyance haha What types of areas are you cruising around in??

  • @spider121

Matt Burke yes it is tight on that area. Hence the reason i didnt buy it. The only skate that i have no problem with is rb80. The bone on my inner feet under my ankle bone is protuding out/bigger than usual. Hence even the other well known skate like fr80 powerslide imperial i found it unbearable to wear. But next seems to be hurting the most cause the design it that way, tight on heel area but abit wider on the toe area.

cracking video as always, i really like the dystopian world...with 1 dude alone, alone and skating!!!!. 1 negative point if that you forgot your helmet.... Now, 4x90 is a much longer frame than a 3x100 and although it might be logical than a 100mm wheel will be more fun than a 90mm, the frame length will play a great deal when you are needing stability, especially on landings. i also think you got the 360 over that step down around 08:23!!! keep shredding

@@MattBurke820 i have a few USD products and my foot can't get used to the PS liners. i have 3 pairs and neither work for me, so it is possible that your foot being used to the razor shape isn't at home yet with that liner. might be worth trying your razors liner in the usd and see if you can identify the reason (liner or boot geometry). my Aeon fit me only with the reign v2 on. also going back to the trimax wheel thing, i find that something is missing. it is very nippy for sure but being that nimble on big wheels makes me feel as if i am on ice all the time. i'd take my 4x110mm setup i rode in my last video over my trimax, anyday. 90mm wheels might also be the ultimate sweet spot between a big wheel which give you that street feeling and at the same time allow you to explore and struggle less when going about. I am very curious to hear your thoughts on the trinity mount. Can you feel a difference with UFS? do you feel there is more power transfer, is it stiffer when pushing, turning sharply, does it make your front foot more planted in when jumping over stuff / doing spins? keep safe and healthy, you and your loved ones

These skates are really awesome, especially with the Kizer frame they added to it, sucks that they only did a limited run of this setup, cause it was a great mix between urban and slight aggressive touches. Have you checked out the AEON 72 or 80's? I skate the 80's pretty often and they have a REALLY nice urban/aggressive hybrid going on. The 80 is probably my favorite skate I've ever skated, if that means anything hah You can also look up Austin Paz on IG and see what he's doing in them, a lot of wizard/aggressive mashup stuff going on.

@@Jkw211 I know what you're talking about it's rough not having half sizes sometimes but what I can suggest is the PS Next boot that has the dual sizing, that most brands (notably RB) have anyways just not marketing it as so. just order half size up if your foot is on slightly bigger width/instep. Also the FR FR1-3 is a great wider/bigger foot size option. Best of luck!

Dude I've reignited my passion for skating in the past few weeks, but my body is going against me. I had a nasty bout of shingles after my first session and I've got a hernia as well. 🙄 Anyway I'm managing nevertheless I mean I'm only 30! *Do you ever find or did you find when you restarted that you had any issues with your legs/groin?* The reason I ask is the inner of my upper left leg, so inside thigh felt like I'd kinda pulled it first time I skated. Pain went away pretty quick, but it seems to be come back so easy, especially when I stride out. It's like my legs don't like that movement anymore. It's doing my head in, and I don't know if I need to strengthen my muscles there or what 🤷‍♂️ Love the videos my guy ✌️🤘🤙

Welcome to the Speed!!! Wait till you go to 110s and 125. The next 90 is perfection for Urban and the 100s are great but stall only on one bolt no grinds. Break in is essential and ALWAYS pull on the sides on the liner as you put em on in order for your foot to be flat inside, otherwise the liner will have folds on the inside and it will rub against your socks resulting in blisters and discomfort. Blade on bro.

I’ve actually got a 3x110 setup I’m gonna try out soon which I’m super excited for, but that’s going to be a whole new world for me! I’m OBSESSED with this 4x90 setup, though, it’s so smooth and fun to rip around town in, but I’m definitely hyped to see what 110 and 125 are all about! I’ll absolutely keep that tip about the liner in mind when I get the skates back on. Had to take a little breather to let that massive blister heal 😩

That cool man! Just got mine they look sick, re tighten and rockered them to my style but I definitely have to put the liners in the oven cause this year's recall liner seems to have a thicker tongue and thicker heel padding compared to my 100s when they were new. This thing are 🔥

Hey nice review. I found that going from 4 to 110 was actually not that hard (I went 80mm to 110 directly). What's different I think is the type of skating they are made for. I find 110 are great for cardio and pushing over long distances (like 15 to 20 miles or more) while 4 wheels are more agile and better suited for urban skating. They do cross over, as in you can go 17miles on 4 wheels if you want but I think 110 are better suited for that type of skating. And conversely you can do tricks on three wheels, although on average you'll enjoy doing them more on 4 I think :) But you should def give 110 a try soon and see for yourself!

I went with the size 10, which was just above my foot size when measured in centimeters. It fits incredibly. My only issues with them are the pressure point that I need to work out and lacing them up around the 45 degree strap is annoying, but it is what it is haha

@@MattBurke820 Both. They are more of a park skate now that I moved to Taos, NM. Really dusty here and not a lot of smooth ground to ride around in. But when I was living in Cali I would skate them along the beach bike trails all the time. I love them as an aggressive skate too! Aeons are so easy to control because of their light weight and one piece responsiveness. I have a bigger foot so obviously the frame is bigger as well... which means I get a larger Hblock in those skates than any of the smaller sizes of the same skate. It can be more challenging to get your royals, backslides, etc... down in those skates but it can be done. I had a fun time learning how to do that in those. Over all I absolutely love the Aeon 80s. Great skates to skate aggressive or do urban with.

Super excited to be here! The liners fit my foot like a glove, it seems like the insole had a weird dent in it that made it dig directly into my foot. I weighted it down and flattened it a bit and gonna keep trying other stuff, but they fit incredibly, so hopefully that’s not my issue!

As an urban/freestyler getting into aggressive, it's cool seeing other aggressive skaters getting into the urban/freestyle thing. Big wheels are a blast. If it weren't for the colors I'd would've suggested the K2 Uptown. I used to skate the old Midtown, which had a rather nice soul plate, but the Midtown is discontinued, replaced by the Broadway, which doesn't look nearly as cool. But the recent Uptown models haven't looked as cool as the '16 model, if you ask me. I'm also a huge fan of FR skates. Best shells for urban/freestyle skating.

I've heard a lot of really good things about the FR line. From what I've heard about K2 is that their newer skates are really uncomfortable inside with the liner? Something about it digging into the foot or something? Not really sure, but I used to LOVE K2 back in the 90's. Stoked that you're getting into the aggressive world! It's a ton of fun, as well. Be safe out there!

@@MattBurke820 Glad to hear it! Looking forward to more ripping on the bigger wheels! In regards to getting blisters, I have very slim ankles, so I wear a small neoprene ankle support while skating, to support my weak ankles, but also add a bit of volume so I don't slip around in my boot and my heel stays locked in a lot better.. If it doesn't let up, might be worth a try :)
