Precious Mackenzie lives up the road from me he is in his 80s still in great shape a real life legend and a great guy
@yeigh089 жыл бұрын
Let me say that when Jim Williams benched he was flat on the bench, no arch and the bar came to his chest. I saw him live in 1975 and was stunned at his size. In 1986 I competed in the Natural Penna.State Powerlifting Championships held in Allentown, Pa by Fred Glass. I had trained hard and my squat was at 700, 420 bench and a 775 deadlift. These were my top training lifts. John Kuc was competing at my weight class, 242, and I felt I had a good shot at beating him. As we were warming up for the squat I saw Kuc squat 600 lbs with no belt, wraps or supersuit. He did 2 easy reps in a high bar style. I was so completely blown away that I ended up bombing out. Some of the guys in the video were super strong. Great memories.

While training for the championships that were to be held at Scranton Central HS, forget exactly what year, Jim (Chimsey) was routinely hitting over 700. In fact, he did 700+ for something like 70 out of 80 workouts leading up to the event. He was so confident that he didn't bother going home the night before... stayed out all night hanging around, talking about powerlifting and eating grapefruits. He went directly to the contest the next day, and informed the judges that he'd be opening with 705. Needless to say, he got crushed on the first two attempts. Came back on the third attempt and locked out, only to have two judges notice that one of his heals slightly lifted off the floor. He bombed out. He did 720 at York Barbell with Bob Hoffman in attendance. They had to reverse the collars to lock all the plates. p.s., I knew Big Jim since I was a kid, and trained with Jim while he was making a comeback around 1981 - 82. I spotted him on several 575 / 600 lifts. The comeback came to an end when he blew out a quad while squatting around 750.

Trained with Estep and Frenn back in 1980. George was still throwing but had not lifted seriously in nearly 10 years. Have a photo of him squatting 725 as if he was getting out of lounge chair. That easy he even had me spotting. That 725 was with a skinny belt and some loose crepe bandages, tracks pants and USA T- Shirt. Also got a chance to Train in Doc Rhodes garage. Both guys super nice, real credit to the sport. Thanks for putting that up, some very rare photos there.

These are the years I used to compete (Maine states, New Englands, etc...) and I remember and loved all these guys. Hard to believe you had some 250 lb lifter, with 500 lbs on one of those tiny, thin and unsafe looking benches (squat racks too), but we lifted that way with no suits or supports. Those were fun days of training. Thanks for posting!
