Sri Durga is a fierce warrior goddess that represents the divine power in this universe.
She is also the mother in this entire world and was praised by kings and lords and all the living beings in this world.
The consort of Lord Shiva, the Goddess is venerated in multiple forms corresponding to Her two aspects - fierceness and benevolence.
At the same time, The Divine Mother is also regarded as the mother of Lord Ganesha (the Hindu deity in a human form but with the head of an elephant) and Lord Kartikeya and is thus seen as the demon-fighting form of Lord Shiva’s wife, Goddess Parvati.
It is said that Goddess Durga emerged from the collective energies of all the gods, including Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma, to vanquish the demon Mahishasura who could not be defeated by any man or god.
In Sanskrit, the word Durga represents “One who is incomprehensible or difficult to reach.” Durga also translates as ”hill” or ”a very difficult task,” which is frequently described as mountainous.
The Divine Mother had many avatars for the good and the welfare of humanity but among all, devotees worship 9 avatars mainly, called the Navadurgas.
They are mostly worshiped during the Navratri, a Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Durga which starts in the mid of October every year.
