Hauntingly melancholic but flirting with frustration and anger in subtle nuances …this song is forever a masterpiece. Jewel herself is such a severely slept on artist and vocalist, but I have always admired that she’s never been so much about fame as she has with connecting to the listener with her lyric and vocal composition. I don’t think she cares that anyone remembers her name but that they remember her music and how it made them feel in that moment. I grew up listening to her, my mum still does too, Pieces Of Me was amongst one of the few first albums I was gifted as a kid, I was 8 years old at the time, but her music just seemed to echo and resonate with my soul and still does to this day. Speaking of Soul, “Who Will Save Your Soul” is another incredible masterpiece as is her very satirical track “Intuition”…absolute gold.

She was in her teens when she wrote many of the songs on this album and 21 when the album came out in 1994. She was 21 or 22 in this video. Jewel was raised in Alaska busking and singing in bars with her family, and then she went to an arts academy on a scholarship to study operatic singing. She plays guitar and writes poetry. When she came out, the story was that she grew up in Alaska and was homeless and living in her car in San Diego when she was discovered singing in coffee shops, which is true, but her voice study for some reason was a part of the story never published in stories about her. This was my coming of age era. I feel very fortunate to have has music from Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Jewel, Joan Osborne, Mariah Carey, Madonna, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette, Björk, Natalie Merchant and others who were so, so talented and unique. I hate to be that old person (at 43) who says it, but something happened after this brief period between the mid-90s and the early 2000s when new talents of this caliber became so rare. It's really strange. Realize that Jewel as with most others at the time wrote her own lyrics and she sang entirely without any kind of technologies like Autotune or other pitch correction. Just an excellent and extraordinary voice, a strong writer and also a musician.

My friend went to high school with Jewel so when her first album pieces of me came out he gave me one of the first copies. Joel came from Alaska yodeling all her life and after high school she became homeless crossing the US in a Volkswagen van. This album was our first real break so she was they’re young maybe 19. This song immediately became the song of my life listen to on repeat everywhere I went for years. It was given to me right at the end of a five-year relationship, talk about a trauma bond. You are so right. It took me years and years to get over and to understand what had happened to me and the trauma that remained even through the first 10 years of my marriage. Jewel is so special. I can’t thank you enough for reacting to the song I haven’t seen one anywhere on here before. It helped me discover a lot. Great reaction. It wasWas released in 1995

All three of my top 3's are from the album Pieces of you. Tracks are "Don't" (track 11), "Amen" (14) and "Morning Song" I recommend doing them in this order for this reason. "Don't" is a love song, of a sort, "Amen" is... heavy material. "Morning Song" is much lighter, and can serve as a balm after "Amen"

Interesting analysis. I had not heard it quite put that way, but it is definitely a psychological transaction that is being made. The really interesting thing is if the guy did open himself up and give his love, someone like what Jewel is portraying would immediately be done with him and discard him. The attraction is the constant striving to win their hearts, and if they get it they become bored.

Your words, thoughts are so similar to my vocabulary the way you articulate and speak. I'm a Pisces with Leo rising, also a "Metal Rabbit", so a double Pisces, so I'm told..
