    I believe that is a DC only unit. The Power Hunt AC/DC is the Black unit, which they no longer ship to the US. We get a lot of good feedback on that Microwave. There is no real Economies of Scale to get the price down, so you would expect to pay more.

    No, it does not kill bacteria because the heating is inconsistent throughout the mass of the item. You are killing if you cook the heck out of it. Yes, but at that point what you want to kill if it is inside would be dead but on the outside it would be really dry. The thing about other means of cooking is that you are cooking for a longer time. The heat moves slowly to the center of the mass and everything is killed, The heat through the mass is consistent over the time it is cooked

    Microwaves aren't ionizing radiation (what is used to irradiate stuff for sterilization purposes). The only risk from microwaves is heating/RF burns.

    As per power consumption, let us assume you have a 1000 watt conventional 12 volt oven & a 1000 watt 12 volt microwave oven. They ask the same amount of amperage from a battery bank, but you know which one will require less time to do its job, therefore use less power from the bank. The microwave is a "no-brainer".

    The two rubber tabs on the back of that microwave are removable so you can put screws/bolts to mount it under that cabinet/ can also remove use the handle to mount it too. The microwave uses repurposed microwave transmitter to microwave food/water, the fan is needed to cool it after usage for a minute.

    I completely disagree propane costs have risen quite a bit over the last 14 years or so you take a years worth of propane to cook with and I think you'd be surprised how much it actually cost I think that little $350 microwave would pay for itself in the first year probably more than once

  • @OH8STN
    @OH8STN10 жыл бұрын

    The fan runs because the microwave works on the same principle as the amplifier for Cb or amateur radio. Because the microwave has such a compact size for its output power, the fan is probably set up on a thermostat, which keeps the fan running until a temperature sensor on the finals are cool enough! If they didn't wire it this way, you would need a large heat sink inside the microwave, and its physical size would increase. Keeping those finals cool will also prolong the life that microwave. I'm going to see if I can order one of these in Europe.

    If you're going to use the microwave on solar power you are far better off using a microwave designed to operate on DC power you wouldn't want to try to invert that much power DC to AC and if you're trying to live off grid I think you'd be far better off to use that microwave to heat up something to eat rather than go outside and fire up a gas cooker that you have to spend money for to replace the gas or go out and build a fire burn wood or whatever be a lot more convenient to just run that little microwave I believe there closer to 700 W if I'm not mistaken that particular model puts out about 680 W worth a cooking power

    microwaves are so inefficient at cooking. even 100/240v ones are 'poor' so a DC one has to be even worse (just the physics makes it worse) 12v fan oven would be nice

  • @ThePauperPrepper

    Heres a thought. Instead of buying Multiple $50 Power Units that you would connect at various locations, get some Heavy Duty Anderson Power Pole Connector (Jumper Cable Size the grey housing version like these prntscr.com/3433dd ) and then mount one to the $50 12 Volt Power Port Power Box and then a matching Anderson Power Pole coupler everywhere you would likely plug in. Great Video, the unit is pricey, but although I have many ways to boil water, like you said, I like having a solid way to use my solar and battery bank to do some cooking. And a well built 12V Microwave really has some pluses. My Small Microwave doesn't even like my 5 KW Gas Generator. Microwaves are serious power pigs. NOTE: By the way, the more I look and read, it appears to me that this 12 Volt Power Port is nothing more then their proprietary way to connect the Microwave to the 12 Volt Battery. If you could open up and confirm this, as well as ascertain that the Plug on the Microwave is just that, a heavy duty proprietary plug, you could just cut their plug off and go straight to Anderson Power Pole Connectors. Of course I would make sure that you had a good 50 AMP Fuse inline. And of course, the "are you willing to void the warranty?" question comes into play Just some things to think about. Knowing you, you already have and are way ahead of me!

    Great point about the Powerpole connectors. Those are the connectors I was telling you about 8digitPDX . I use them in the ham shack. I bet current draw on this device is going to be monstrous! Make certain your DC cabling is fused and can handle it. Great video old buddy.

    SurvivalTechNord Hey Survival. Yep, I have become a PowerPole Connector Addict. Besides using on my HAM Equipment, I have them in the Truck as most of my main 12 Volt Connectors. I got two of the big SB Types (60 Amps I believe) and am going to mount one end to my battery and then cut off the ends of a set of Jumper cables so all I need to do is plug them in, great for jumping someone else, or being the "Jumpee" Im hoping I can easily just have them hang out nicely through the grill, letting me jumpstart without even popping the hood!. Its just a great connector. And for those working with the smaller sizes, 15-30 and 45 Amps, I cannot stress enough to invest in a set of PowerPole crimpers. I didn't at first and I wish I had. Makes for better crimps and easier life!! LOL

    I would change out the connectors except right now I want to do the testing and evaluation with the factory stuff. I think this is the most expensive appliance that I have personally ever purchased. I normally buy appliances used out of classified ads, and it is waay more than I ever spent on a small microwave, but I figured since I am going this far, I woudl go all the way. It puts me that much closer to not needing propane to be hooked up inside the trailer but I have yet to get the hot water heater up and running for electric only.

    8digitPDX I agree with your thought process. Depending on your review outcome, I will probably invest in one as well. But you are right, it is a definite high end piece, no 2 ways about it. But, it is a specialized piece and they have a corner on the market.

    8digitPDX Actually old buddy my wife and I are really grateful. We also have a propane hook up on the bugout/summer home. Being able to convert to solar power and installing products like this would be a really good thing. So we're also waiting for the outcome of your review with this microwave :) At the moment our appliances refrigerator, lighting, stove, ... all running from propane! I would rather have everything running off of solar, then augment the solar power, with a propane powered DC generator for "dark" days. Keep up the good work man.

    For the price of this, if you don't need to travel with it, I would suggest using an AC inverter and a regular microwave.... If you have issues with reduced power on your AC microwave then there is a problem with the inverter, either it does not have a high enough wattage, or you need to use a "pure sine" type inverter, as the standard "cheap" models are not well suited to use with much other than lightbulbs etc.

  • @8digitPDX

    @8digitPDX

    9 жыл бұрын

    I have a pure sine way inverter, but it was really not that great. It burned stuff up just as much as a regular inverter. The 12 microwave so far has been a bit of a disappointment the last few times I went to use it, just kind of weak.

  • @JamesLewis

    @JamesLewis

    9 жыл бұрын

    8digitPDX That's still very strange, the output of a true sine wave inverter should be indistinguishable from grid mains, it would be interesting to test the voltage and check the waveform output of your inverter under load. Also, remember that the technology in an oven is only about 60% efficient at generating microwaves, so if you have a 900w microwave then you will need a 1500w inverter... The wavebox produces at best 400w of microwave energy so your inverter would have to be very far below spec if a fully working AC microwave has a lower power output. It's not that I don't believe that your setup didn't work well, but that there has to be some fault or setup issue and as an electrical engineer I would want to know why.

  • @8digitPDX

    @8digitPDX

    9 жыл бұрын

    James Lewis I use the PowerHunt microwave on 12v only since that is the version I bought, the 110v plug location on it is blocked off. It runs like a 400 watt microwave should I guess, drains the heck out of the batteries and barely gets warm. You need a running vehicle or sunlight directly on the solar panels backfeeding the battery while it is in action, running it on stored electrical power alone will drain the batteries down hard.

  • @JamesLewis

    @JamesLewis

    9 жыл бұрын

    8digitPDX I don't disagree with what you said... I was talking about using a 600-800w AC microwave and an inverter, there would have to be something wrong with your setup if you got less microwave output from that than the wavebox, and it should be cheaper. I'm not 100% sure how the efficiency would compare, since pure sine invertors are generally only ~90% efficient, but there will also be a lot of loss in the cables pulling 65A at 12v so it might be comparable.

  • @8digitPDX

    @8digitPDX

    9 жыл бұрын

    James Lewis I did the AC inverter with a conventional microwave in that very camper, and it was pretty weak, that's why I bought the PowerHunt WaveBox, figuring I was cutting out the extra power usage by going with a more direct power connection of it being DC only, instead of the power losses which are common in going DC-AC-DC.
